X-Box

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Console Video Games: Microsoft: X-Box

By SpottedKitty on Friday, July 19, 2002 - 10:51 am:

There’s already an X-Box thread under "Up and Coming"...but as it's here now I thought I'd post here instead. I'm surprised noone else has posted yet.
I would just like to say to all those people that would dismiss the X-Box out of hand to go and actually /play/ it for a reasonable amount of time.
Especially Halo.

I've recently moved and the house I'm in currently has two X-Boxes plus a rather nice LAN configuration and, seriously, Halo ought to come with an addiction warning. Never since Half-Life have I played such an engrossing game. Sure, the controls take a little getting used to, having a pad rather than the "standard" keyboard/mouse configuration is a big turn off at first but don't let that spoil your enjoyment of an otherwise great game. For those of you that think your good at these FPS games your in for a bit of a wake up. I recently finished it on Normal and in an ego boosting "That was easy!" move decided to skip Hero and jump straight into trying Legendary….I got my tail kicked within the first five mins by a bunch of Grunts and one Elite. Cue one a sobering experience and a deflated ego. ^_^

However, saying that, so far the only other games I've particularly liked was Wreakless and Fuzion Frenzy. Which is a shame really because judging from Halo which, for a release title, is an outstanding piece of work and shows /exactly/ what the console is capable off. Maybe that's part of the problem, I dunno. When you get a game as polished as Halo on release date you feel kind of cheated by all the others that don’t maximize the consoles potential. As much as I'd hate to admit it, they may have been better leaving Halo out of the line-up for a few months and let the console find its feet.

If you can, try and look past the "It's made by Miscrosoft! Ewwwww, its got cooties!" mentality, find someone that actually has the console and actually have a /real/ go. You may be surprised.

How much is the X-Box currently selling for in the United States ? Reason, they have reduced it's price from about 160 pounds to 130 pounds (In The U.K) & I'd like to know the equivalent cost for the U.S version.

Hiya SpottedKitty. On a whim, I thought I'd take a look at this board. My husband bought me an X-box when it was first released-- the reason... I wouldn't shut up about the Halo game, LOL. I'm not a young kid anymore (I'm going to be 45 this year) and I must say that Halo is horribly addicting, but easy enough for someone of my age (and ability) to be able to play. It's got it's challenges, but it's not so hard that I can't work the controls or figure out the puzzles. I've been a console gamer for the past twenty years and I have to say that I'm really impressed with the games released on Xbox. I too am a Halo fan. I also enjoy games such as SilentHill2-- a bit more sedate than Halo, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Hey dognotspicy,

I'll probably be torn to shreds by someone else but I still think it's a bit of a shame that Halo is still one of the best XBox games out at the moment, Though I will admit that Midtown Madness comes close. The simple fact remains that whenever we have friends over at our house the most likely thing to get pulled out and played (despite having several GameCubes, PS2s and PCs) is Halo Deathmatch or CTF.

I agree with you about Halo... :-D

Any Midtowners out there on XBox Live?

Had the game for a while but only recently got Live and I'm looking for some "friendly faces" to play with as my experience has been so far rather..."mixed" :)

What city? There's a big difference between Midtown Manhattan and Midtown Podunk, KY.

By Spottedkitty on Friday, May 07, 2004 - 6:48 am:

Whoops. Should've made myself a bit clearer. But I'm in the UK so I should get a break. ;)

I wasn't meaning either of the two cities unfortunately. I was referring to Midtown Madness3. :)

What's the subsription fee for Live.

It really depends on how you go about it. If yer gonna pay by Credit Card then everythings dead easy.

For starters it's recommended that you have a Broadband connection of 512 or greater, especially if you wish to host games. Where I live, We've got the NTL 600 (Is it 750 now?) package and we can get three XBoxes with full voice going through it at the same time with no slowdown issues.

The second step depends on how you want to go about things. There are three ways I know to sign up to Live.

1) Don't quote me but I *think* you can sign up on yer own without getting a headset via the dashboard. This'll set you back around £36 or £3 a month.

2) Certain Live enabled games include a two month free trial thing when you buy them. They usually don't come with a headset either. Be aware that they'll charge you after the two months are up unless you cancel. Price, obviously, varies.

3) This is the best way to get a kit. Go to play.com and order the Live Starter Kit. At the time of writing there's two options. One with just the Headset and 12 month subscription for £34.99 and one with Project Gotham2 for £49.99. This will essentially give you the headset for free and it's well worth it.

After that you can decide really on how you want billed. They can either charge you on a month-by-month basis (£3) or you can pay for a yearly subscription (£36).

If you wanna pay by any other means then I suggest having a root around http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/live/intro/ or getting a CC. :)
