Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Console Video Games: Sega: Dreamcast

Star Trek: New Worlds from Interplay is scheduled to be released in fall of 1999 for Dreamcast!

Unfortunately it looks like Sega has messed up bad with the dreamcast. It has already announced the Dreamcast 2!(It will have DVD, instead of GB-ROM or whatever wierd CD system the DC uses). Why will anyone buy the DC when games companys will start making games for the DC 2. (This isn't a project in the long term like Dolphin, but planned to come out pretty soon after DC).

New Worlds looks very impressive, I shall add a board over on PC Games. After all, who would want to play a strategy game on a console ;-)

I love my mouse and keyboard!

Games are ALWAYS better on consoles. No lag!

Play an early PlayStation game and tell me that. "Load time," anyone?

By Lisa Shock on Tuesday, June 29, 1999 - 1:02 am:

The DVD player is an add-on which will plug into the USB hub on the Iomega Zip Drive. Over 40 games to be released in a 4 month period is what the hype is all about! Who else went to E3 besides me?
It's all about consoles getting a modem plus lots of games for a cheap price! The PS2 just keeps getting delayed - just ask those people waiting for Sony to break ground on that chip factory site so they might have some clear idea when developer systems might become available!

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, June 29, 1999 - 9:43 am:

Unless it's USB-2, the DVD player is going to be godawful slow. I believe the maximum data transfer rate on USB is 1.5 MBps. An 8x CD-ROM will saturate that. Even a 1x DVD player is equivalent to about a 20x CD-ROM. Now, if they put FireWire on the machine (Sony calls it i.Link and everyone else calls it IEEE 1394 because they don't want to acknowledge Apple Computer's copyright), then there'd be no problem.

I finally found out what the deal was with GD-ROM. According to Total RPG, it is a CD that has been modified somehow to carry one gigabyte of data. (That's the size of the hard drive on my old computer. How far we have come.)

I experienced a modicum of the game play of a Dreamcast game while perusing through a computer store. It was a demo station at which they were allowing everyone to play Sonic Adventure. I must say, I am not noticing much of a distinction between this and Playstation or even N64. For starters, I had not located any forms of antagonism but only faceless, humanoid locals. Secondly, when and how is this capricious artificial intelligence intended to make its presence known? And finally, who are all these new characters and how come only Sonic and Tails, as apparent on this particular game cartridge, are selectable? On the other hand, it is delectable to capably venture throughout a hotel. I selected and played as Tails, and he roamed about a hotel after boasting to Sonic of his airplane being powered by a chaos emerald, all actions except for this cinematic scene under my control of course. Too bad someone could not design a game that is basically a game console's equivalent to virtual reality in that the protagonist may enter a hotel and extemporaneously bump into someone, as is done in real life.

It runs on discs, not on cartridges. It's only a demo, so that's why Sonic and Tails are the only chouices. And to really see an example of the system's power, play Soul Calibur or possibly Marvel vs. Capcom. Those games are awesome. I predict that you'll see a ot of arcade ports come to the Dreamcast as developers realize how powerful the litle thing really is.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, November 16, 1999 - 9:28 pm:

All 23 Dreamcast launch titles are up now, in alphabetical order. Feel free to add new titles. Let me just say that I think the best of the launch bunch were Sonic, Soul Calibur, and Marvel vs. Capcom. If they can maintain the flow of good games, and lots of them, or even just lots of them, I think the Dreamcast could really take off. (With 500,000 units sold by now in the US, clearly many people agree with me.)

You can find Dreamcasts for 30 bucks now at
various game outlets, and I've seen the games
run as low as 5 bucks in one place!. 55 bucks got
me Sonic Adventure, Cazy Taxi one and two, and
the Dreamcast.

Wow! First post in over 5 years! :>

By AMR on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 - 8:06 pm:

Where the entry for Ecco the Dolphin: Defender Of The Future?

That is the only Dreamcast game I would have liked to play. Too bad this console drove Sega to near-bankruptcy, but at least they still make games for the modern consoles.

Just play Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the XBOX 360 or PS3, and you'll see what I mean!

By AMR on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 - 8:07 pm:

Where is the entry - that's what I meant.

Also, first new post in just over 5 years! :-)

It's about time Sega create
a Dreamcast 2 console
