Games into Movies

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Console Video Games: The Kitchen Sink (courtesy of Mario Bros. Plumbing): Games into Movies
By Ben Jackson (Bjackson) on Monday, May 31, 1999 - 2:18 pm:

I guess because of the discussions about Metroid and Zelda movies, I thought this would be a pretty good topic. This is to discuss games that you would like to be turned into movies. I think that Final Fantasy 3(American) and Final Fantasy 7 would make cool movies

By Mike Ram on Monday, May 31, 1999 - 9:35 pm:

Hey again
I think there is a FF movie coming out but unfortunately it's not about FF3 or 7. But I agree, FF3 would be a killer movie (With Jim Carey as Kefka and Pat Moriko as Gestahl, of course..JK!!)

By Dan R. on Monday, May 31, 1999 - 10:28 pm:

Games into movies? 5 words for you: Super Mario Bros. The Movie. Anyone remember this one? It bombed in theaters. I liked it though (just call me a hopeless Mario addict).

Video Games Into Movies:

Good:
Mario Bros.
Mortal Kombat

Bad:
Double Dragon
Street Fighter
Mortal Kombat Annihlation
Wing Commander

Well, anyway, I heard that the FF movie would be done entirely in CGI (at least three times as many CGI effects as Star Wars I, Lost In Space, and Titanic COMBINED)!

By mattpesti on Tuesday, June 01, 1999 - 3:13 pm:

The Mario Bros. movie would have been better if they actually played the game.

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, June 01, 1999 - 3:54 pm:

matt: The movie was fun. It didn't take itself too seriously (the mistake all the other ones made).

By Jenova! on Wednesday, June 02, 1999 - 12:12 am:

Hey...just a word on the FF movie...I was looking around and I heard that there is going to be one and the whole thing is going to be done like how they do the cinemas in FF8! I definetely want to see this!

By Mark Bowman on Saturday, June 12, 1999 - 10:47 am:

If you want to see good movies made from games,
Japanese animation (Anime) is the way to go,
unless you like Power Rangers style movies.

By Mike Ram on Thursday, July 08, 1999 - 10:38 pm:

Does anyone know when the Tomb Raider movie is coming out and who will play Lara Croft?

By Brian on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 1:02 pm:

Mike Ram: Early rumours say either Liz Hurley or Demi moore (no contest on this one).

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 11:22 pm:

I think TR the movie is probably a non-existant PR stunt. The rumor's been about since TR1 came out, and brought PC games into the public eye.

By Matt Pesti on Wednesday, July 14, 1999 - 9:33 pm:

I heard that rumor in Newsweek. The word was that Paramount was doing it. Not that I belive it, or care for that matter.

By D. Stuart on Friday, September 17, 1999 - 4:27 pm:

I have always yearned to observe sequels to Street Fighter: The Movie and Super Mario Bros.: The Movie so that obvious flaws and errors, as well as morsels of misinformation, found in and regarding the individual films would be rectified. For example, Luigi is more valiant than Mario in the movie, despite the fact of course that it is vice versa in the games. Furthermore, "Jimmy" Blanka and Lt. Charlie are not the same individual, and M. Bison was portrayed as being rather pusillanimous and feeble.

I was greatly provoked after catching Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in the movie theater, because I wasted over ten dollars for this vapor-emitting exorbitant portion of fecal matter. Nothing was the slightest bit accurate or sensibly entertaining. Did I mention character development and plot consistency were nonexistent? I would have rather witnessed Johnny Cage, Rain, Nightwolf, and Sheeva, as well as Kabal, Sektor, Kung Lao, and Lucas Stryker, who were not included in the movie at all, combat one another than the protagonists (i.e., Liu Kang and Raiden), deuteragonists (Lt. Sonya Blade, Maj. Jackson "Jax" Briggs, and Kitana), and villains (Shao Khan, Sindel, Montaro, and Ermac) make an attempt at a drama-based story line. Even the characters of Jade, who is a hero--not a traitor--in the video game, and Noob Saibot were frivolously introduced and discarded accordingly. Moreover, I feel as if I did not spectate Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Smoke, Cyrax, Mileena, and Shinnok enough in action, particularly Shinnok. Shinnok ought not have been presented until at least the conclusion of the film along with his fiducial sorcerer, Quan Chi. Oh and by the way, that entire sub-rosa mole notion in regard to Jade is direct reference to Tanya in Mortal Kombat 4.

Video games into movies?

I can sum it all in one word....

STOP!

By Al Lowe on Saturday, May 13, 2000 - 3:55 am:

When are they going to make a Leisuresuit Larry movie?

By Mike Ram on Saturday, May 13, 2000 - 10:53 pm:

UPDATE

1.Tomb Raider The Movie is coming out, and apparently Angelina Jolie will be playing Lara Croft.

2.FF is coming out. The movie will be all CGI, but if you check out the pics and movies at thegia.com you can see that the movie will look ultra realistic.

By Matt Pesti on Tuesday, February 27, 2001 - 10:24 am:

How do you make a final fantasy movie? Have a Cid, an Airship, Some birds, Masume, Wedge and Briggs, Character Classes, Xcalubur, an Empire of some sort, Elemental Orbs and fiends, and the Villian/ Higher power. Throw in the script for Star wars and we have a film.

Personally, I'd like to see the first film made into a game. If anyone understands the ending, that is.

By RPGMaster on Friday, March 09, 2001 - 6:22 pm:

Some comments on this:
Wedge and Biggs only started showing up in FF6.
The Orbs (AKA crystals, only orbs in FF1) were gone after FF5 and didn't come back until FF9.
Fiends haven't been used since FF4.
Why some birds? (unless you mean chocobos)

By Brian Webber on Friday, March 09, 2001 - 6:36 pm:

I saw a theatrical trailer for Final Fantasy movie. It actually looks pretty good. The movie that Titan A.E. COULD'VE been.

By Matt Pesti on Sunday, March 11, 2001 - 5:35 pm:

Oh, and Moggles. But Wedge and Briggs won't make an appearance, in a film, for "Lucas" Reasons. Oh, and summon spells, despite how absolutely ridcoulos they are. Hades is just overblown in FF7.

By Matt Pesti on Tuesday, March 13, 2001 - 10:53 pm:

I just saw the supernova attack. I take that back about Hades.

By Michael Conlon on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 10:56 pm:

One of my fondest childhood memories was seeing Super Mario Bros for the first time and looking back on it, I realize that they did something you would think was impossible.

I have always enjoyed the notion of a luvable villian. A villian more amusing than threatening. Tim Curry in Clue, Gary Oldman in The Fifth Element, plus any of Mike Myers Evil Characters in Austin Powers, and looking back at the career of Dennis Hopper, you'd think it wouldn't be possible to fit him into the role. Super Mario Bros did it, and dit it well.
