Metal Gear Solid vs. Zelda

Fair warning. Your moderator is a Zelda fan. I think it's, overall, a superior game. Much better than MGS. Then again, the games are so different that they can hardly be compared, but oh well. It certainly never stoppped me. If you like fantasy adventure, play Zelda. If you like dark and gritty, play MGS. If you like cooking brisket at the beach, get the Red Devil portable outdoor cooking system. (Surely someone out there knows what I'm talking about, right?)

Matthew, hello again!

I just wanted to say that if you're a young adult or anyone who enjoys darker, more realistic games, try MGS.

If you're a youngster or enjoy games like Mario 64 or even the Final Fantasy series, try Zelda 64.

I want to make something clear though: I rarely play video games yet I beat both games in a week. I beat MGS 3 times and found all the secrets in only 2 weeks (school weeks, with only playing a few hours a day or so...). I beat Zelda several times in a month and found it to be one of the easiest games I have ever played (The only game I have played where the bosses are one of the easiest obstacles!).

I am not saying either game is bad, it's just that different age groups and different people will like one game more than another. I happen to think MGS is the best game ever, but my younger cousin likes Zelda 64 better.

The bottom line: Zelda is a good game for kids and younger people, while MGS, with it's more adult content, is cooler for young adults and mature audiences.

Thanks for your time.

I don't really think it has anything to do with age groups. I know that Zelda is designed to appeal to as wide a range of people as possible, which accounts for some of the little kid feeling it has. However, I do find it a little condescending that you recommend Zelda for only younger players or those who liked Mario 64 type games. (I think you're probably unaware that I'm only 14 years old and thus a bit sensitive to age remarks. I don't believe that age should have anything to do with playing videogames except for those with explicit content.) One of the great things about Zelda is that a broad cross section of people love it!

I am inclined to agree with you about the bosses. Especially if you have the Biggoron Sword. However, I would argue that the puzzle and adventure elements more than compensate for that. And I think that, visually, Zelda is the best game I have ever seen.

Bottom line from me is that Zelda is more of an everyone game, while MGS is more of a niche product. It's not that it's a bad game (I have never played it and don't own a PSX, how would I know?) but it just doesn't appeal to as many people. Also Zelda has a better website. (http://www.zhq.com)

By Mike Ram on Thursday, July 08, 1999 - 10:35 pm:

I thought the official website was www.zelda64.com ?
And yes you're right, age has nothing to do with it really, and I didn't want to make it seem like Zelda 64 is a kid's game (I'm 17 and I really like it!) but you gotta admit it does feel like it sometimes (Faeries and little Kokiri kids dancing around and all...)!
And, visually, MGS is the best game I have seen. Have you noticed the big wall glitches in the Z64 Water Palace or "I just fell onto the corner of a cliff and now I am bouncing around like a computer glitch oddured" moments?
I had no idea that you were 14 and I apologize if I made you or anyone else uncomfortable.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Thursday, July 08, 1999 - 10:44 pm:

It probably is, I just like ZHQ better.

The faeries (weren't always spelled that way) and Kokiri kids are part of the whole fantasy setting. Every good fantasy needs elves!

What Water Temple glitches? And I never noticed the "edge of a cliff" thing you describe. Perhaps you could provide more detail? The PSX game problems I have are all related to loading time. CD-ROM driveswere not that fast at the time the PSX was released, so there is a lot of load time in some of those games. It gets annoying for me sometimes, and I don't even own one. The advantage of a cartridge is that loading i nearly instantaneous.

Of course, with all future systems based around DVD this won't really be a problem.

By Mike Ram on Thursday, July 08, 1999 - 11:04 pm:

Sorry, I should have spent more time on that post.

I like ZHQ better too!

Water Temple Glitches: Sometimes when I swim around I can see through the rendered walls and tell where the seams come together. Also, When I fall down one of the long tunnels underwater this happens a lot if I don't center the camera behind Link. These happen to me every time but I have the Gold SE Zelda pak, maybe yours doesn't have this problem?

Edge of a cliff thing: Sometimes when I fall off the edge of a building or something and hit the edge of another building (Or an outcropping or floating platform or other structure with a corner) Link starts bouncing up and down uncontrollably until I try to roll or walk him off... This is similar to a computer glitch I have sometimes where I'm listening to an Mp3 or Midi or Wav or Audio CD and the computer "half- freezes" and the music gets stuck and keeps repeating like a scratched record and I have to restart...whew!

I knew a website that had all the glitches, if I can find it I will post it here if that's OK.

Not to say I didn't like the game!

One more thing, MGS did not have any long load times that I recall. Even though it was a mature game I still loved it and I would play it many more times if I borrowed that PSX again. It was just that good!

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 12:23 am:

Huh. I've never experienced those glitches before. Maybe they're just in the Gold version. (Doesn't stop me from desperately wanting a copy, as I can remember having the first two Zelda in gold.)

I do know that there are a couple of glitches relating to Epona, the Longshot, and Lake Hylia, but I don't see how you could experience them unless you were trying. In fact, even then it seems kinda preposturous. And there is that bottle glitch, but nobody who doesn't want to uses that.

By Mike Ram on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 12:49 am:

But it's better than riding around hunting for Poes forever. And I replace the Deku Nuts with the bottle since I never use it anyway. But is it reall worthwile to get 4 bottles when even 2 can get you through almost the whole game? Nah.
Which reminds me, I beat the game again recently without getting the ice arrows; there's no real point in getting them either except to experience the Gerudo Training Ground.
Was Zelda: A Link To The Past available in the gold color too? I can't remember.
See you tomorrow.

By Mike Ram on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 8:33 am:

I meant to say I never use the Deku nuts so I replace them with a bottle.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 1:03 pm:

Just a few random thoughts:

As Matthew pointed out at the start of this, MGS and Zelda 64 are very different games. IMHO MGS is better, but then it isn't limited to a 64MB cartridge ;-).

Seriously though, Zelda and MGS, despite any similarity, are really in seperate genres. It's a bit like comparing Mario 64 to Tomb Raider. (I know this is vague and even wild generalisation, but hey)

By Mike Ram on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 1:26 pm:

Huh. Actually I think Mario 64 and Tomb Raider are kinda similar, but I do see your point, Ed!

I'm curious, if Zelda 64 is on a 64MB cartridge, how much memory and space does MGS take? It has to be a lot with more than one CD. I'm hope the PC version will not be a power hog; my PC probably couldn't take it!

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 1:36 pm:

Actually, Zelda is on a 32 MB cartridge. 256Mb/8 equals 32 MB. (Nintendo rep[orts cart sizes in megabits so it'll look bigger. They won't have this problem when they go DVD with Project Dolphin.)

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Friday, July 09, 1999 - 11:17 pm:

Oh, and it isn't Project Dolphin. Someone at Nintendo finally realised what Dolphin means, and the working title is "The Next Generation Nintendo Console".

Snappy.

By Mike Ram on Saturday, July 10, 1999 - 12:31 pm:

Argh, I'm really getting tired of having to buy a new system every few years. I just got my 64 a year ago. What happened to the 64DD?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Saturday, July 10, 1999 - 3:02 pm:

You're sure? The latset Electronic Gaming Monthly (possibly the best US console video game magazine) just had a feature on it calling it Project Dolphin. Then again, the Nintendo 64 was originally called Project Reality, so I'm not too worried.

The 64DD will be released in Japan, but no the US. By the time they got it ready for release here, the Dolphn would probably be out. I don't think the DD would have been all that great anyway. And we'll get some regular N64 games out of the deal, since they'll be porting the ones they were planning on using as DD games. (For instance, the Zelda sequel will be a regular 64 game in the States.)

By Mike Ram on Monday, July 12, 1999 - 3:56 pm:

I read that Zelda 64 part 2 will be called, "Ura Zelda" or something like that. Is that true?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, July 12, 1999 - 4:43 pm:

Not in English. Ura Zelda means "Another Zelda" or some such in Japanese. That's probably just a working title and we'll definitely see something better by the time it's released next year.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Tuesday, July 13, 1999 - 12:51 pm:

"Oh, and it isn't Project Dolphin. Someone at Nintendo finally realised what Dolphin means, and the working title is "The Next Generation Nintendo Console".

Why don't we stop referring to it as the Dolphin. Please?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, July 13, 1999 - 1:44 pm:

Why? It's a lot easier to write than "The Next Generation Nintendo Console" and a lot more memorable. They WILL change the name before release.

I like metal gear solid, its a very good good game, but Zelda is better, I don't know why but it seems to have an edge over any other game.
