Which PSX games are the best?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Console Video Games: The Kitchen Sink (courtesy of Mario Bros. Plumbing): Which PSX games are the best?
By Mike Ram on Monday, August 23, 1999 - 12:27 pm:

Now that the Playstation is lowering in price, I am thinking about getting one. Don't get me wrong, I have had a lot of fun times with my N64, but the PSX just has so much more to offer. I have made a list of the PSX games I am considering about getting, but I don't want to go overboard and get more than, say, 3 or 4 to start off with. If anyone could help me with my choices, it would be most appreciated!

Here is the list, in no particular order:
Metal Gear Solid
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Xenogears
Breath Of Fire 3
Alundra
Wild Arms
Syphon Filter
Gran Turismo
Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit
Need For Speed: High Stakes
Wipeout XL
Final Fantasy 7

And, as for upcoming games:
Final Fantasy Anthology
Chrono Cross
Legend Of Mana
Final Fantasy 8

As you can see, I am gearing towards the best RPG's, but I also like other cool games.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, August 23, 1999 - 3:28 pm:

Trust me. Wait for the PSX2 before you get FFVIII. They'll be releasing an enhanced version as a launch title for the PSX2. However, it will cost about $70 when new because they don't want the bottom to drop out of the regular PSX market. If it were up to me, I'd just get Xenogears, FFVII (which is overrated, but oh well), and Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, but RPGs are my current obsession.

By Mike Ram on Monday, August 23, 1999 - 4:30 pm:

Does the PSX-2 have backwards compatability?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, August 23, 1999 - 7:26 pm:

Yes, which is why Sony is concerned about the bottom dropping out of the PSX game market. They aren't going to have many launch titles available, so they want to be able to sell the few that they do have, some "enhanced" ones, and all the old PSX games. IMO, this is a major mistake, because nobody's going to buy a $70 game when they can get a perfectly good one for $30, even if it's for a system that's not being developed for anymore. Not to mention the reported ¥45,000 or $399 price of the system, which is due to the costs of developing the Emotion Engine from scratch. Nintendo has the right idea here, using slightly modified off-the-shelf technology that will produce results as good as or better than the PSX2 for a much, much lower price. (Can you tell I'm a Nintendo fan here?)

By Mike Ram on Tuesday, August 24, 1999 - 12:09 pm:

If they keep making games for the original Playstation, it might not become obsolete as fast as you think. Many people would not be willing to spend almost $500 for just a system and a game. It would be a lot cheaper to buy a brand new PSX and a few games for it, even if it does become outdated soon. Or wait until the PSX2 lowers in price, but that won't happen until there is a PSX3!

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, August 24, 1999 - 3:17 pm:

However, how many peope do you think are going to buy systems and games that are years out of date when they can have a bleeding-edge Nintendo Dolphin for only $50-100 more than the current price of the PlayStation. Plus the Dolphin will have an launch lineup of enough titles to keep you busy. Right now, I can't think of a single launch title for the PSX2 that isn't an enhanced PSX game.

By Ed Jefferson (Ejefferson) on Wednesday, August 25, 1999 - 11:56 am:

Yeah, but PSX 2 has some advantages as the middle machine- it can learn from Sony's mistakes, while being able to build up a user base before Dolphin's (or the Next Generation Nintendo Console's) release.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, August 25, 1999 - 3:18 pm:

I'm not sure how big of a user base it can build in only a few months. At least, in the United States. I'm not sure of a Japanese release, but I know the Nintendo will release in October 2000 or wihen the next Mario game is finished, whichever comes last. It is absolutely imperative that Mario be a launch title for the Dolphin.

By Mike Ram on Wednesday, September 08, 1999 - 9:28 pm:

My revised list, after much deliberation:

Metal Gear: Solid
Final Fantasy 8
Lunar: SSS Complete
Xenogears
Breath of Fire 3
Syphon Filter
Wild Arms

What do you think?
P,S, I'm not sure about Crono Cross anymore but Legend of Mana still looks cool.

By Mike Ram on Wednesday, September 08, 1999 - 9:29 pm:

I meant to type, "P.S." Doh!

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, September 08, 1999 - 9:50 pm:

I've heard that some people were disappointed in Xenogears. One thing I'd add is Marvel vs. Capcom. There's something surreal about seeing Rockman beat up on Venom.

By Mike Ram on Saturday, September 11, 1999 - 10:38 pm:

Another new list, I promise I won't update it again for a while!
MGS (Obviously...)
Lunar:SSSC (Looks good, good reviews)
Xenogears (Friends say it kicks...)
BOF3 (Seems to be pretty awesome...)
Wild Arms (Kinda old but people say it's still great...)
FF8 (I don't know still...maybe, though...)

After seeing reviews at videogames.com and hearing about it from other people, "Legend of Mana" is garbage, so scratch that one. I only hope Square won't make the same mistakes with Crono Cross...

P.S.: Final Fantasy Anthology is out of my list for now. I loved Final Fantasy 3, but I don't think I would be willing to pay 60 bucks just for the game and some new PSX fmx movies. And yes, it does come with FF4 and FF5, but I have played them already and didn't really like 'em.

By Anonymous on Sunday, September 12, 1999 - 10:48 am:

maybe if you gave some Reasons for these games we could help you

By Mike Ram on Monday, September 13, 1999 - 3:33 pm:

Here goes (I moved some around):
MGS: I have played it. I beat it 3 times in 2 weeks. I found all the secrets. But I still love it! It has great graphics, sound, control, etc. Basically, I just have to OWN this jewel.

Xenogears: Just about everyone who's played it loves it. It has nice graphics, FMV's, and a good story. The dozens of reviews I have read have given me the sign: "Buy this game!"

Lunar: Although many people say it has older graphics, some of the old-school RPG's are cool. And this game has a huge and compelling story, so it is high on my list.

Wild Arms: Graphics, story, and FMV are cool but what really sets this apart from the rest is the solid gameplay and scope of the game.

Breath Of Fire 3: I don't know! It looks like a cool game but I have read many people's reviews and they give it only average scores... or lower. While all the screens and movies I've seen look pretty good,I'm still reluctant about this one...

And finally, Final Fantasy 8: I know, it is the best game ever, has great movies, etc. And since everyone loves it, I should get it, right? Well, I don't know if this is the type of game I personally would like. It seems so complex and tough that I am hesitant.

So now I have 4, possibly 5 games, with FF8 unsure. All in all, I think this will be the final list, unless Crono Cross is something mindblowingly special. Help me out, buds!

By Yotsuyasan on Monday, September 13, 1999 - 10:43 pm:

I for one have been enjoying Final Fantasy VIII immencely. The whole Junction System does seem complex at first, and I was fealing aprehensive when I first poped in disc one, but well before the end of disc one it almost becomes intuitive.

Lunar was excelent, and I look forward to Eternal Blue when it gets its PSX re-release.

I loved Xenogears, and it is on my list of favorites as well, but it almost surprises me how everyone hapens to forget it's two little flaws: the horrible dubbing and disc two. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story and disc two was very interesting, but it could have used a little more gameplay and a little less hours of doing nothing but reading text.

Sony unveiled the PS2 yesterday... I WANT ONE!!!!!!!

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, September 14, 1999 - 5:59 am:

I don't. That thing is butt-ugly and has a number of glaring omissions.

By Mike Ram on Tuesday, September 14, 1999 - 6:55 pm:

Yotsuyasan: I thought Lunar: Silver Star Story complete (For PSX) has BOTH Lunar: Eternal Blue and Lunar: The Silver Star Story in it. These games were originally released for the SEGA CD, but SONY decided to re-release both games with brand-new FMV's and other enhancements for the PSX.

I'd like to hear what you have to say about BOF3 and Wild Arms, if you've played them.

By Mike Ram on Thursday, September 16, 1999 - 6:56 pm:

A NEW LIST!!!
MGS
FF8
LUNAR
XENOGEARS
WILD ARMS
BOF3
BOF4
GRANDIA

Wild Arms or Grandia? Hmm.

By Yotsuyasan on Thursday, September 16, 1999 - 9:33 pm:

Mike: Silver Star Story: Complete was just a re-working of Lunar: The Silver Star, and did not include Eternal Blue. However, Eternal Blue is on it's way to the PSX, as well. Having never owned a Sega CD, I look forward to finely getting to play it. Of course, the release date on the Working Designs website has slipped from this winter to next spring... but that's to be expected with Working Designs. I'd rather have a quality job then a rushed translation, anyway...

By Mike on Saturday, September 18, 1999 - 9:33 pm:

Here we go again!

1. Lunar: SSS Complete (The expensive one with the music & BTS CD's, & guide book w/cloth map. This game feels like a good choice for my first PSX game...)
2. Grandia (Coming out next month! I can't wait.)
3. Xenogears (My friends say, "Get it!")
4. Breath of Fire 3 (Still looks good.)
5. Wild Arms (Ditto.)

MGS, FF8, BOF4:
MGS: Not sure, but maybe a used one later on.
FF8: ?...Still apprehensive, but I'll probably rent it first and see for myself.
BOF4: BOF3 isn't that old yet, and BOF 4 won't be coming to the states for at least a year.

If I have made any errors or you think there are other points I shoud consider, please either contact me or post your thoughts!

By Mike Ram on Sunday, September 19, 1999 - 4:13 pm:

Uh, Wild Arms and Grandia should probably be switched. Sorry!

By Matt Pesti on Sunday, September 19, 1999 - 5:01 pm:

Final Fantasy Anthology! Hasn't anyone who wanted to play those games got an emulated version from japan now?

Am I correct to assume that Mystic Quest, Final Fantasy Adventures and Final Fantasy won't be on there. Dose anyone else think that game was really boring>(FF1 that is)

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, September 20, 1999 - 3:00 pm:

What's worse is that the only FF game that's on there that wasn't originally an SNES game is FFIV. (As is my understanding.) As is also my understanding, FFVI (III Japanese) is the best of the bunch, better even than FFVII and VIII. But I don't own a Playstation anyway, so the question is kind of moot.

By Yotsuyasan on Tuesday, September 21, 1999 - 8:21 pm:

Matt Pesti: I enjoyed FFI, and in fact it was the only FF game I had played before VII. (I didn't own any systems between the original NES and my PSX...) Also, I've never been much into emulation, so I haven't had a chance to play the games on the Anthology and am lookingh forward to it.

Matthew Patterson: FFIV was an SNES game... however, this is irrelevent since the geniouses at Squaresoft (note sarcasm) have opted not to include IV with the US version of the anthology. The anthology will only include V and VI. Also, VI is not the Japanese III. VI is the Japanese VI. It was the US III. (The Japanese II, III, and V were skipped in the US. VII was going to be called IV in the US, but it got so much pre-release press as VII that Square kept it as VII to avoid confusion.)

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, September 21, 1999 - 9:21 pm:

Sorry, sorry, sorry. I did know all this, but it's very hard trying to think straight when I do this right after school and the last thing we've done is Tae Bo (curse the PE gods!)

My post should read:

What's worse is that the only FF game that's on there that wasn't originally an AmericanSNES game is FFIV. (As is my understanding.) As is also my understanding, FFIII (VIJapanese) is the best of the bunch, better even than FFVII and VIII. But I don't own a Playstation anyway, so the question is kind of moot.

Better? I tend to think of all of them by their original numbers because it makes it easier to sort out when they were released. I still happen to be a fan of FFVI, and I'll probably never play VII or VIII until somebody gives me a PlayStation for free (cause I'm certainly not paying for one.)

By Mike Ram on Saturday, September 25, 1999 - 11:30 am:

I was doing some research and I have decided to change my list again, hopefully this will be the LAST time!

1. Grandia: As soon as this comes out I will get it. Everything points to go!

2. Lunar: Depends on whether Grandia will come out first or not, but I will still buy this game.

3. Wild Arms: A stand-by, better reviews than Xenogears, but it's old...

4. Xenogears: Mixed reviews make this a stand-by, but most give it low scores.

As for the others, I will have to wait and see what happens first. Later!

By Mike Ram on Wednesday, September 29, 1999 - 12:31 am:

Hey Matt Pesti, I just discovered that Chrono Trigger is being ported over to the PSX as well! It will feature FMV sequences as well as newer graphical enhancements. Sounds pretty cool. I found this out at www.the-nextlevel.com, if you're wondering, they have movies there for download. Late!

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Wednesday, September 29, 1999 - 6:15 am:

I'd swap the remake of Chrono Trigger for Xenogears. CT is a WONDERFUL game, and the added anime sequences and other enhancements can only make it better.

By Mike Ram on Thursday, September 30, 1999 - 11:05 pm:

Hmm...after reading more reviews on several top-notch web sites, I am actually more confused than before. Please note that I have added several possible "Hold-out" games. Here goes:

1. A tie between Lunar and Grandia. If Grandia gets high review praise when it comes out then I will get it first, but no matter what, I will probably get both games.

2. Metal Gear solid: I have a friend who may be willing to sell his copy of this game, so this is going ot have to be no.2.

And that's it! Here are the other games I'm considering, in ABC order.

Chrono Trigger: Special Edition
Dino Crisis
Final Fantasy: Anthology (5&6)
Final Fantasy VIII
Gran Turismo
Syphon Filter
WipEout 3
Wild Arms
Xenogears

Okay, this is my list for now, I will wait until I actually get a JOB first before saying any more!

By Matt Pesti on Saturday, October 02, 1999 - 8:03 pm:

Chrono Trigger?, I never said anything about chrono trigger. I assuming they added about 18 new endings.

By Mike Ram on Saturday, October 02, 1999 - 9:07 pm:

I just assumed you would be a fan of this game as well since most people who liked FF3/6J also like Chrono Trigger. Myself for example...

By Mike Ram on Thursday, October 07, 1999 - 6:32 pm:

UPDATE:My friend is selling me his PSX w/MGS for $100! This is such a good offer that I already bought myself a green memory card even though I don't have the PSX yet! I turned in my job application to a new place so hopefully I will have my PSX and my job next week...

By Mike Ram on Sunday, November 21, 1999 - 9:15 pm:

Getting my PSX tomorrow. Should I get LUNAR or Grandia?

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Sunday, November 21, 1999 - 10:07 pm:

My vote is for LUNAR. You can't go wrong with either, though.

By Mike Ram on Sunday, November 21, 1999 - 10:09 pm:

Thanks, Matt.

By Mike Ram finally returns on Sunday, May 07, 2000 - 6:38 pm:

I now have:
LUNAR
GRANDIA
Gran Turismo
Metal Gear Solid

I am going to get:
LUNAR 2
Chrono Cross

I am going to have my friend burn me copies of:
WWF SMACKDOWN!
Wipeout 3

PS If you are thinking of getting either LUNAR or GRANDIA get LUNAR bc GRANDIA is a real disappointment and LUNAR is one of the best games ever made.
