Zig Zag

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Outer Limits: Season Six: Zig Zag

A formerly pro-technology cyber-columnist leads a daring attack on the supercomputers that control society.

While faking his sobriquet and position (he was previously an infamous computer hacker, who supplied his internal chip amidst incinerated remnants of his secluded domicile so as to give the illusion of his apparent death) and consulting his employer for assistance in his identity crisis (i.e., he is misidentified as the infamous computer hacker), the protagonist manages to surreptitiously install a computer virus into the supercomputers' mainframe, which can only be triggered by his employer. After the assault gets the covey into the mainframe room, all but two of the members are killed in various attempts of the FBI to regain seizure of the room. The protagonist and his long-time inamorata, whom he never met until approaching the synectic, anti-technology throng of individuals with whom she had become affiliated, survive and await the arrival of the protagonist's employer. When the employer arrives, the protagonist ingeniously convinces him that he can deactivate the self-destruct mechanism simply by providing his authorization to the limited-access panel in the room. Unbeknownst to the employer, this is what legitimately triggers the countdown, and everything in the room, including the mainframes, is obliterated in an explosion.

This show really loved computers.

The Internet was just coming into common usage when this show was on.
