First Anniversary

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Outer Limits: Season Two: First Anniversary

As he celebrates his first wedding anniversary, Norman Glass thinks he's the luckiest man alive. His wife, Ady, whom he met after the tragic death of her first husband, is stunningly beautiful and talented. She loves him more than anyone alive. They have two great friends, Dennis and Barbara, who were married on the same day and are just as madly in love as Norman and Ady. But suddenly things start to change. First, Dennis leaves Barbara. Then, Norman must struggle with the strange, growing revulsion he feels when he touches, smells, tastes, or sees his lovely wife. Norman thinks he's going crazy, but Barbara and Ady know better. Is love blind? Is beauty only skin-deep? Guess again.

The wife reveals herself to be a "monstrous" alien to her husband, which causes the husband to panic and soon lose his sanity and the love he had for his now former wife. In fact, he is escorted away manacled to a gurney by paramedics. Consequently, the wife alters herself so that she is physically another woman and pursues her former husband's male confidant.

It would have been much better, in my humble opinion, if the male protagonist ultimately revealed himself to be a "monster" and that the male protagonist's "monstrous" wife could not handle the male protagonist's physical appearance. I simply would have had a different interpretation of this episode if I was the writer at the time.

I was really surprised to see this story on "Outer Limits". I first read the Richard Matheson short story from his book "Shock III" in the 60s.

Matheson is really more a horror writer than science fiction. His "science" is cooked up after he conceives his plots. His stories usually strike at psychological pressure points.

He is really good at it.

In the original story, the wives were supernatural beings, not aliens, if memory serves me.
