Technology. Technology. Technology. Technology. Technology. Technology. Technology. Technology.
(And so on- just trying to condense the script!)
No wonder the Borg didn't think much of the Kazon...
(Having said that, this was an enjoyable episode in terms of character, mood and style. One of the best Kazon episodes, although the original title "Manipulations" would have worked better- partly because here in England we spell it quite differently.) That torture-cum-interrogation scene though- it compares uncannily with a similar one in TNG:
CULLUH: Now give me the command codes.
CHAKOTAY: When Seska's through with you, she's gonna kill you!
***
MADRED: What are the Federation's defence plans for Minos Korva?
PICARD: There are FOUR lights!

I've just seen this episode again and I'm finally going to ask the question that's haunted me for so long.

When Seska says that she helped herself to "a sample of Chakotay's DNA" while he was unconscious, what is the imaginative viewer to assume happened? Did she (a) withdraw a couple of drops of blood, pop down to the Kazon vessel's advanced genetics laboratory, extract the chromosomes and unite them with her own, etc., etc.; or (b) withdraw a sample, shall we say, of his manly elixir? Or was there some Delta Quadrant stork involved?

Of course, since the baby turned out to be Maj Bubba's anyway, it doesn't make much difference, but one must assume that Seska made some sort of good faith effort here since she apparently believed this baby to have been "sired" by Chakotay.

And, in the interests of science, and good viewing, I, for one, would like to know what the heck happened during the commercial break. Please communicate your theories.

Maybe she got what she needed from the Doctor and Sickbay? The equipment would be advanced enough there.

Actually, if you remember after Cullah left the interrogation, Seska stuck a needle-thing in Chakotay's neck. This was the DNA extraction. The nit was, she said he was unconcious, but he was awake, just drugged up. Just watched in tonight.

This made me wish Chakotay had more to do in the sixth season. He was such a strong presence here; of late he has seemed little more than window dressing. I saw the needle extraction, too, Locutus, and feel the way you do. Seska's pregnancy was introduced to accomodate Martha Hackett's real life pregnancy.

The transporter was used to beam two Kazon into space. Later, Voyager finds their bodies. Intact. Shouldn't their bodies have exploded because of the lack of outside air pressure? The air inside their bodies trying to escape should have torn them apart.

SP, that doesn't really happen. The skin is actually a very good seal against a vacuum even though you die. It's just a movie thing that started and became something people really thought would happen.

I stand corrected.

By Jessica on Friday, April 06, 2001 - 7:18 pm:

Why exactly were the Kazon trying so hard to get the command codes? Wouldn't any decent captain change these as soon as her first officer went missing?

Of course, it's possible that Seska knew Federation IFOS well enough to know that this wouldn't occur to Janeway, but still . . .

Jessica, that would be sensible, but Voyager doesn't always do what is sensible.

Why didn't Chakotay set his shuttle to self destruct to disable/destroy the raider, or at least rig it to blow when Voyager got there to increase his chance of rescue? If he was going to give up anyway why not take them with him?

Why was Voyager pursuing the shuttle under "maximum impulse?" Go to warp and get the guy, and deal with the Kazon before their buddies show up.

I was really impressed with the acting during the torture scene, on Chakotay's part anyway.

I'm fairly certain that "punching a hole in shields" doesn't quite work the it is portrayed in this ep, and am a bit surprised that it hasn't been mentioned, which causes me to believe I'm mistaken. Anywho, the 'bubble effect' is projected by emitters and when a section is damaged enough it ceases to give protection.

The word -way- should be in the first sentence of my last paragraph, sorry.

I was umipressed with Federation Structual integrity here, a single hole in the hull almost destroyed the ship, I always assumed the structual integrity field helped with pysical impacts and enabled them to go to warp ad perform other extreme manuvers without putting strain on the ship. This episode made it look like the ship would fall apart without it. Even when it was perfectly still.

As for the Kazon, not another sexist species, it's been so overdone, the Klingons, the Ferengi, those Flakey skin aliens from DS9, the Angel One people. It was a blatant attampt to copy the Klingons.

Why did Seska go to the Nistrum, they're weak. What about the Ogla or the Ragora(spelling?) from this episode. The Nistrum seem to have managed a comeback by the series finale as he has at least 4 huge ships.

I have a request. I am reading these right after I watch them for the first time. Please alert me for spoiler alerts or something when you post. haha. I got a few just from this episode. It might be too little too late since there is almost no one on here, but its worth a try.

Me: I'm fairly certain that "punching a hole in shields" doesn't quite work the it is portrayed in this ep...
Adding to this, if an enemy keeps shooting in the same spot, how about try turning the dang ship! This isn't too unusual a situation in general for Trek, but it happens all the time in this show. TPTB also seem to forget that there are two different types of shields: the 'bubble effect' type and deflector shields, the latter of which should protect the hull from at least some physical attacks, such as a small boarding craft crashing into the cargo bay, similar to polarizing the hull like on ENT. Speaking of the cargo bay incursion, it was nice of Tuvok to warn a clearly hostile boarding party before firing at them. Phasers do have a stun setting after all.

Am I way off about this; two types of shields? Confusing it with SW perhaps? Eh, the first part of my post still stands at least.
