Why does everyone hate nelix so much, I know he can be a pest and anoying at time and serves no purpose in the series and cant cook and.. (I guess I just answered my own question)

By Matthias Roth on Thursday, January 14, 1999 - 7:53 pm:

His cooking "abilities" are the reason for Janeway to leave Voyager. ;-)

By Corey Hines on Friday, January 15, 1999 - 1:49 pm:

Actually, I think the writers of Voyager think that Neelix is pretty useless as well. I think he has the most instances of EGAL (Everybody Gets A Line).

By Doug Sibley on Saturday, January 16, 1999 - 4:26 pm:

I think the character of Neelix has suffered over the seasons because of the writers. Ethan Philips has proven that he can be a very talented actor and Neelix's backstory is very interesting. BTW, in case you did not know Neelix deserted the military, all of his family was killed and he used to belong to a life of crime. In Pathways he had a serious drug addiction. When Neelix gets a story it is usaully very good however when he gets a couple of lines per episode he comes off annoying and useless.

I dont really see why people blame Neelix for the bad cooking. I'm err.. well fairly sure he would've had the common sense to ask the crew what kind of tastes they like, but it just might be hard to create alfafa quadrant flavours with delta quadrant materials.

I hear their comming up with a nelix cook book. I wonder what that will be like

By ScottN on Monday, January 25, 1999 - 11:53 am:

Its out. I saw it at Bookstar. It has recipes from every character, not just Neelix, and not just Voyager either...

I didn't read it too closely though, to see if they were *real* recipes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Catherine on Friday, January 29, 1999 - 6:41 pm:

They are real recipes. There's a recipe for "Heart of Targ" that you can make using veal.

By Catherine on Friday, January 29, 1999 - 7:16 pm:

I heard that Ethan Phillips was considered for the Doctor's part and Robert Picardo was considered for Neelix's part. Picardo was disappointed he ended up with Doc's part.

By Chris Booton on Wednesday, February 24, 1999 - 8:37 pm:

It's a shame that nelix has been reduced to nothing but an EGAL character, he had a lot of promice but faded quickly. They need to do something ot make him useful again. Any suestiong on how to do this?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Mike Konczewski on Thursday, February 25, 1999 - 3:45 pm:

Write a script that features Neelix as the central character.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By marten on Friday, February 26, 1999 - 5:50 pm:

Yep actually it is possible to submit new scripts for voyager.. Check out some part of www.startrekcontinuum.com. Its in there somewhere.

I do agree btw - Neelix could use some creative writing, however on the other hand I have no real good ideas what it should be about. I think in star trek there are two possibilities:

1/ Some character gets a personal problem with something, and I can definately not think of anything potentially conflicting with Neelix (other then his cooking)
2/ Some outside force acts, and drags one or more chars into a situation where they have to work with what they have to fix.

Is there a recipe for raktajino in the book?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Chris Thomas on Friday, February 26, 1999 - 9:27 pm:

It's all very well writing a Star Trek script but it doesn't help when script coordinator Lolita Fatjo doesn't even respond to your initial inquiry letter.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By marten on Sunday, February 28, 1999 - 9:47 am:

Chris: Didnt? That sucks. I havent tried to even think up a script myself.. I find myself to be too precise (read: nitpick-y) to come up with a script that is both plausible, possible, and interesting ;)

Anyway - I didnt check out the pages in great detail on 'what to do if you wanna write a script' - but is it proper procedure to write an initial inquiry? - I mean one might expect you to just go 'hi, I have a script, I have a lawyer. Here it is"?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By marten on Sunday, February 28, 1999 - 9:50 am:

Oh - plus in my script I would probably let seven strand on some planet, would encounter me or my 'avatar' - then get into bad trouble I warned her about.. get rescued and cured from a fatal disease for her (the heel on her shoe falls of or something dramatic like that) and then she will revert back to humanity and.. oh... well you get my idea ;)

By Chris Thomas on Sunday, February 28, 1999 - 9:50 am:

I wanted the writer's guidelines and the official form - if you don't have them and follow their style to the exact letter (such as layout, spelling and so on) they will be tossed aside, unread.

I am quite fond of Neelix I like the way he tries to keep everyones morale up and it must be nice if your feeling low to have someone who actually cares about you and can't affect your career trying to provide some comfort and light relief. He has his sucesses according to the episodes. Who else will make you a birthday cake - the Captain or bridge crew (I think not).

Unless your Vulcan. Then he is plain annoying.

He also acts as link between the close knit bridge officers and the rest of the crew. The voice of the common man/woman/alien in Voyager. A contrast to the whiz kids types (Torres, Paris, Seven & Kim)with their techno-babble and mastery over the ships systems and the authority figures (Janeway, Chakotay and Tuvok) who are by necessity less approachable.

I think the Captain realises his importance, or else he would have not been included in senior briefings nor would she listen to him whenever he approaches her. Access to the Captain reflects favor and power. He would be directed to Cmdr Chakotay otherwise and restricted from the bridge.

Neelix can be funny at times, but also really
annoying, especially when he's with that brat.
Americans can't resist putting sickly little kids
in TV series. Does anyone remember that kid in
Battlestar Gallactica and Fluffy? Eechhh. Seriously though, the guy who plays Neelix is very talented - they just need to drop the schmulzy scenarios.

By Alfonso Turnage on Tuesday, July 06, 1999 - 6:16 pm:

I like Niami. I like the fact that Trek sometimes put kids in the mix. It gives the characters the sense that they actually live real lives.

By Mark Swinton on Saturday, January 22, 2000 - 5:05 pm:

Who's Niami? Is she "that brat"?

By Brian Lombard on Friday, June 09, 2000 - 7:58 am:

Hands down, Ethan Phillips is the best con guest I have ever seen. He's funny as heck, entertaining, all around very likeable. You see this guy as Neelix and you realize what a disservice the writers do to him.

By Richie Vest on Friday, June 09, 2000 - 9:59 pm:

Brian I agree. He is wasted in this role it is just to thin

I believe you mean Naomi.

He also has had small roles in other films, such as the Immigration inspector in the forgettable "Green Card". I also know he was in the film "Ragtime". I think he was a cop, and he had only one line.

Last Friday, Mr. Phillis guest starred on NUMB3RS, playing Leonard Philbrick, a crooked college professor.
