Jennifer Lien as Kes

Oh, this is an exciting conversation. I guess because Kes is gone there's not much to talk about.

By J. Goettsche on Monday, February 01, 1999 - 7:40 pm:

Did anybody see Jennifer Lien in "American History X"? I thought she was pretty good.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Mike Konczewski on Tuesday, February 02, 1999 - 10:49 am:

I love her voice; very sexy. Lien is great as the voice of "L" on "Men in Black: The Series."

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Chris Thomas on Wednesday, February 03, 1999 - 8:58 am:

Not much to talk about? Too cynical, methinks. Does anyone think she realised her full potential? She was starting to get there in Season 3 with Before and After and things like that...

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Scott McClenny on Friday, February 12, 1999 - 7:58 am:

The three BEST cast members of Voyager:
Jeri Ryan,Jennifer Lien and Kate Mulgrew!:-)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Catherine on Friday, February 12, 1999 - 5:08 pm:

I think not. Garrett Wang, Kate Mulgrew, and then Ethan Phillips.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Sharon Jordan on Saturday, February 13, 1999 - 8:58 am:

Jennifer Lien was very good on 'Voyager' She was turning into a very well rounded three dimensional character. She had that alien effect, but yet she becoming almost maternal, to everyone in the show. I could tell there was a rapport between her and Mulgrew. They could of kept her on. She seems very mature for her age. I do believe the TPTB really wanted a sexy look in all the women. I noticed this all the time with the uniforms. Kes, from a short scruffy wig and (Forgive me!) frumpy dresses, to a beautiful long hairstyle and her own catsuit! (I believe the long hair does not coincide with what the Ocampa really look like) Then they scrapped her and brought in babe in a borg. This move was handled poorly. Maybe Seven is a nice addition to the stories, but they could of kept on Kes!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Marten on Monday, February 15, 1999 - 7:25 pm:

I think it was more the actresses choice then TPTB. As far as I heard the actress indicated she wanted out for unknown reasons. People speculated about bad writing, her turning into some part of the med room furniture, but maybe there were personal reasons. We will never know, probably.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Anonymous on Thursday, February 25, 1999 - 10:16 am:

Marten,

All I'm going to say is, you're wrong, wrong, wrong. Lien DID NOT want to leave the show. Do not believe anyone who tells you otherwise.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Mike Konczewski on Thursday, February 25, 1999 - 11:30 am:

Anonymous--how do you know? Are you, in fact, Jennifer Lien in disguise?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Sharon Jordan on Thursday, February 25, 1999 - 7:52 pm:

I heard somewhere that she was let go. That the TPTB thought her character was not going anywhere so they wrote her out. I also read somewhere that she was very upset for leaving. And that the rest of the cast was just as upset as well. I'm sorry if I don't know or remember well where my sources comes from. I remember the subject, but not faces.Memory is long gone due to premature insanity.

By Alfonso Turnage on Saturday, April 17, 1999 - 5:57 pm:

I honestly thought Kes was one of the best things about pre-Seven of Nine Voyager and is still tied as my 2nd favorite Voyager character of
all time. I loved Coldfire and the episode where Kes turns evil. I also loved the gift and her role in Caretaker and Time and Time Again(despite the confusing time travel elements of that story). What do you out there think?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By BLT on Monday, April 19, 1999 - 8:03 am:

In the heavily-hyped Star Trek magazine, which just went on sale, there's an interview with Brannon Braga. In it, he states that they "got rid of a character that didn't work - Kes". Sounds to me like she was fired.

There is a Kes FAQ at ht tp://members.aol.com/vulcancafe. It might provide some info on what happened.

I also loved Kes. My favorite Kes episode was "Warlord." I thought that Jennifer Lein did a wonderful acting job in that episode.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Scott McClenny on Thursday, June 24, 1999 - 9:52 am:

First does anyone know if Jennifer is still on MAN IN BLACK?

Second I stand by my earlier comment that Jeri Ryan,Kate Mulgrew and Jennifer Lien are the three BEST castmembers of VOYAGER.:-)

Third too bad they couldn't have done on VOYAGER
what they did on DS9 when Worf joined it:keep both Kes and Seven,I'd have loved to have seen Jennifer and Jeri wrok together for at least one full season,it would have been COOL!!!:-)

Fourth Why couldn't they have killed Vorik instead of Sito in LOWER DECKS on STNG(yeah,I know wrong board to ask this question, but thought it make for interesting discussion)

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Phillip Culley on Thursday, June 24, 1999 - 10:23 am:

I didn't think Vorik appeared on 'Lower Decks'. Wasn't the Vulcan on that episode called Taurik or something?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Alfonso Turnage on Friday, June 25, 1999 - 2:22 pm:

I heard that Jennifer had a drug/alcohol problem and that things got so bad(her not knowing her lines, falling out during tapings, stumbling around the set, bringing drugs in sick-bay) that they just had to get rid of her.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Richie Vest on Friday, June 25, 1999 - 2:32 pm:

WOW that's is a serious charge Alfonso Can you say where you heard that?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Murray Leeder on Friday, June 25, 1999 - 4:08 pm:

I heard that too. I also heard that she slept with Alexander Enberg. Both were denied. How plausible do you think they are?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, June 25, 1999 - 4:46 pm:

Not very. Unless they did some VERY skillful editing, I never noticed anything the slightest bit wrong with her on the show. As for the sleeping with Alexander Enberg, what difference does that make? This is Hollywood, people!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Murray Leeder on Friday, June 25, 1999 - 9:34 pm:

I know. If that's the truth, Jeri Taylor must be extremely protective of her stepchildren.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Len on Monday, June 28, 1999 - 11:24 am:

Was there ever an explanation/episode describing why Neelix and Kes "broke up"? It seemed like one episode they were a couple and the next they weren't. Anyone know what happened? Unaired episode? Bad writing? ????

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Richie Vest on Monday, June 28, 1999 - 1:11 pm:

Actually Bad Writing In the episode "Alter Ego" they have a throw away line about Kes and Neelix breaking up. That means they broke up off screen. Anytime characters have something major happen to them off screen it's a sign of bad writng

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, June 28, 1999 - 4:07 pm:

There was supposed to be a breakup scene in "Fair Trade" but it got cut for time or something.

By Scott McClenny on Saturday, July 31, 1999 - 8:59 am:

Does anyone know the name of the series that
Jennifer was in before Voyager and the name
of her character?
Just curious as my e-mail pen pal from Slovenia
made a mention of it today.

You mean Roanne on "Phenom"?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By BLT on Saturday, August 07, 1999 - 8:08 pm:

I saw Jen recently at her first convention since leaving the show. Drug problem? I wouldn't doubt it. It was the single most painful convention appearance I've ever witnessed. Most con guests come out with some sort of monologue, but Jen really had nothing to say, and went straight to the questions. Her answers were very vague, and she was very quiet. Not something you want from a con speaker. People would ask her simple questions like what her favorite episode was. She couldn't even answer that. I got the distinct impression that she barely remembers being on the show. It was kinda sad, cause after 30 minutes, the questions dried up, and the con host was practically begging us to stay. Ouch.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Biff B on Saturday, August 07, 1999 - 8:48 pm:

BLT, I think you're jumping to conclusions on Jennifer having drug problems. It may have been something more mundane like jet lag, a lack of sleep or reaction to over the counter cold medication. Let's not be in a hurry to throw her into the addict pool.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By BLT on Saturday, August 07, 1999 - 9:42 pm:

Regardless of what it was, terrible convention guest.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Scott McClenny on Monday, August 23, 1999 - 2:58 pm:

According to my handy-dandy VOYAGER calendar
tommorrow(and let us not get into nitpicking my spelling 'cause I know that there some of you out there who probably spell it the same way, and besides it is besides the point)is Ms.Jennifer Lien's birthday.
So just in case she shows up here:HAPPY BIRTHDAY
TO THE MOST WONDERFUL OCAMPAN IN THE GALAXY!!!!:-) (Like I said just in case..hey!ya never know, now do ya?) Personally I think what makes both Jennifer and Jeri so sexy is that they both have such sweet dispositions that makes everyone who works with them love 'em.:-)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd shag her in a second.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only a second? I don't think she'd be very pleased if you only lasted that long!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By margie on Friday, December 03, 1999 - 1:07 pm:

Then again, she only lives nine years, so a second to her is longer than a second to one of us!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Mark Swinton on Saturday, December 04, 1999 - 4:53 pm:

But is it?
Look at what we learned about the Ocampa in three seasons: they are born like any infants, but they grow to teenage size and stature within their first year of life. Thereafter, there is one more spurt of growth that has them looking like young adults. They stay this way until the "morologium" as seen in the ep. "Before and After", which has them rapidly ageing until death.
Conveniently, between the ages of one and eight they are fit, healthy, active... etc. adults.

By Nick Angeloni (Nangeloni) on Tuesday, January 11, 2000 - 8:58 pm:

I'm sorry if someone has mentioned this before (been gone the past few days) but Kes is returning to Voyager later this season, according to TrekWeb.com. Robert Picardo confirmed this at a convention, but of course it's nothing solid yet. I for one would like to see her back, at least for a couple episodes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Anonymous on Tuesday, April 11, 2000 - 6:39 am:

Was it ever explained whether one Ocampa year equals one Earth year?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that was the clear implication from the episodes in which she appeared.

By Kes Fan on Friday, May 12, 2000 - 11:13 am:

So -- given the fact that Jennifer has returned to the show with a weight gain, could there be any truth to the rumor that she used to have a drug habit? I mean, could she have kicked the habit and put on weight as a result, since people who do a lot of drugs are often really thin?
If that's the result of getting clean, then I'm happy for her. She's still beautiful anyway.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Tom Jeanoiur on Friday, May 12, 2000 - 8:07 pm:

People put on weight without having been former drug addicts, you know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Elaine Roberts on Friday, May 19, 2000 - 11:40 am:

Seeing Jennifer Lien heavier than she was the last time we saw her made me wonder anew if she struggles with an eating disorder. She got terribly thin toward the end of her time on Voyager and didn't look well at all. Her face was puffy and her voice was rough. She looked healthier on "Fury," even if she is heavier. Of course, this is no criticism of her; we all struggle with something. I was just glad to see her again.

I have to disagree with you. I thought Jen looked great at the end of her tenure on Voyager. That sexy cat suit, the long hair, I thought she was stunning!

Kate Mulgrew recently cleared up that stuff about Jen being so bad at conventions. It seems that Jen is horribly shy; one of the most shy people you'll ever meet in your life, and she rarely does conventions because it's very hard for her to get up on a live stage and talk about her experiences and answer questions.

The only reason TPTB axed Kes was because they wanted to boost viewership among males age 18-49. That really payed off for Brannon Braga because now he's sleeping with Jeri Ryan.

I really thought Kes was a great character, and Jennifer Lien is a great actress, and I wish her the best of luck in life.

Ben

If she's so shy, then how could she handle being filmed and having her image air on TV in front of millions each week?

On the other hand, the shyness probably explains why she was so good in the role of Kes. Very quiet, kinda understated, but with a good presence.

Matthew Patterson, being around your friends doing something is different than doing it live in front of strangers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Chris Thomas on Saturday, May 27, 2000 - 6:17 pm:

Incredibly shy actors are a dime dozen. When they're on stage or film, they're the characters they are playing - at a convention they would have to be themselves.

Who did JL play in American History X?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Leader Desslok on Wednesday, June 07, 2000 - 1:26 pm:

I also saw Jen at a convention last year. It wasn't that she was shy. It was that she was rude.

I can't say I blame her. She got fired from the show, has probably been typecast as Kes, and finds jobs hard to come by. But still, if she's not happy with Trek, she shouldn't do cons at all.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Ben Cohen on Wednesday, June 07, 2000 - 7:29 pm:

How was she rude?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Todd B on Wednesday, June 07, 2000 - 9:40 pm:

At a convention earlier this year, the guy who runs Slanted Fedora also stated that Jen was incredibly shy and that was what made her appearances so painful to endure. He stated that she did much better when another guest, like G. Wang, would be on stage with her to banter back and forth with, and he said that he probably wouldn't book her anymore unless she approached him.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Leader Desslok on Thursday, June 08, 2000 - 5:02 am:

She talked down to the guests. One guy came in late and asked a question which, unbeknown to him, had already been asked earlier. Lien snapped at him rather sharply saying something like "I already answered that," or something to that effect. The audience actually gasped when she said that.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Ben Cohen on Thursday, June 08, 2000 - 12:43 pm:

Wow. She sounds like a jerk. I can't stand rude people. It's perfectly fine to be angry with the producers, but don't take it out on the fans. Then again, she could just have been having a very bad day.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Callie Sullivan on Friday, June 09, 2000 - 2:49 am:

And if she is painfully shy, it could well come out looking like rudeness. I've done that myself - in my teens and twenties I was agonisingly shy and would often be abrasive with people not because I meant to be but because that's how my fright at talking to them came out.

Perhaps Jen had been pressured into doing these conventions and was suffering agonies.

On the other hand, if she was just in a bad mood and hadn't wanted to do the gig in the first place, then there's no excuse for her rudeness.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Chris F. on Saturday, December 02, 2000 - 10:44 pm:

Ok. It seems like a lot of people are wondering why she left. I really don't know, but I have the feeling that it was a move that the producers made to try to bump up the ratings. Also, I think that Lien IS shy. I read the book on the making of Voyager, written, I believe, by the same guy who wrote the original "Making of" book about the original Trek series. In that book, he makes reference to the fact that of all the shows that are on tv, Star Trek's actors are one of the most scrutinized by the public. That if you are an actor on Star Trek, you MUST be able to handle ALL of the attention you will get. It seemed to be apparent that Lien was really not the type of person that could handle that. She apparently was always fairly quiet on the set.

That being said, I miss Kes. I think that she was becoming a really good character, and Lien really is a great actress. It's just too bad that she left the show.

Luigi, when I said makeup, I meant all of it - which makeup can mean in Hollywood. They changed her hair, especially, which made her look different. Different enough that my mom thought it was a different person.
Which is what happened in another show I watched. First season 'makeup' was really different than the next season. Almost like a whole different person - except that it affected almost everyone on the show. It's weird.

Luigi, I think the Tuvok board is taking up the first half of this one.

I was just listening to an old Adam Sandler tape, oh yeah I said tape, and Jennifer Lien is one of the characters in it. She's on the "They're All Gonna Laugh At You" album, which is the funniest IMO, and she's on a date at the drive-in with the Buffoon. I'd recognize that sexy voice anywhere.

Thanks, night. I don't know how that happened.

Years ago, I heard that Garrett Wang's Harry Kim was supposed to get the axe in Voyager's 4th year.
However, Wang then made People Magazine's annual 50 Most Beautiful People in the World list. Hence, TPTB thought it would be bad form to fire him after such an honor.
Thus, Jennifer's Kes was given the pink slip.
It makes me wonder, though, would 7 of 9 be a male character if Garrett was booted off.

Jennifer Lien was busted with cocaine in her trailer during the filming of voyager.

What's your source?

If it means anything, I thought Lien was a real cutie as Kes. She also played "Valerie Fox" in the pilot for my beloved short-lived animated series from the 90s "The Critic" who was a really bad actress who seduced Jay Sherman in order to get a good review for her new movie. She was of course, terrible in it, and Jay didnt compromise his principles and therefore gave his honest opinion about "Kiss Of Death" (that was a real movie, two years later). So she dumped him.

I love Lien's voice, and IMO she was more attractive then "Twin Bags Of Mostly Implants" ever was. I mourned the loss of Kes, but the way they brought her back in that incredibly lame and confusing time-travel plot was really uncalled for, I felt. I mean, Kes was EVIL now? Come on!

Anyway, her character was badly written for the most part, but I did find the idea of a physically weak but telekinetically powerful species with the shortest lifespan of any other Trek species fairly appealing. And the Caretaker/Suspira storylines weren't too bad either, I thought. I wonder though, whatever became of the rest of the Ocampans after the Caretaker died. How much energy reserves did he supply them with, I wonder?

As for her the rumors of her doing drugs on the set of VGR, I dont think that ever actually happened. Notice that whoever posted that was called "Jeri Fan". They probably did that to discredit Lien because they liked Jeri better, for some odd reason. Well, in any case, accusing her of drug possession is uncalled for, I think.

Well, we do know that she went on to play Edward Norton and Furlong's sister in "American History X". Avery Brooks had a great part in it as well!

Jennifer Lien apparently took a cue from Stephen Collins; she's been busted for exposing herself to children. More here.
