I got this idea watching B5 yesterday.
Well, if anyone wants to read my personal "fictional religion" thingie, go to my homepage and read about the religion of the Kestrelae.
http://www.free-conversant.com/taundra
The "story" can be read under Fiction - Queen's Victory.
Now where on Earth would you have got the idea of a made up, primitive religion shrouded in mythology and fantasies, that is obviously made up to anyone willing to look at it rationally? :P
Peter.
Except Peter, you fail to realise that just maybe, maybe Valera and Prak'hor are real?
This is a fantasy setting, after all.
As for where I got the idea, prolly from my own vivid imagination? I assure you, it works quite well, thanks.
Offler rulez!
Oh and BTW, highly recommended is "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchett.
Isn't a Fictional Religion an oxymoron?
No. Fictional religions are religions that do not exist.
Muad'dib and the Mahdi.
The Bene Gesserit with their Kwisatz Haderach
Best fictional religion: Bokononism of Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle".
Lords of Magic. 8 faiths in that game. It's also the only computer game that had it's old discussion forum taken over by a group of teenage witchcraft enthusists, which should say something...
Why do you all not worship her noble greatness, the great Glory?
Because we're all too busy worshipping Sallroshin and Brinn. :P
Bokonon.
Scientology anyone?
Would that it were.
Although I vaguely remember reading somewhere that Hubbard did include some of the philosophy that later became Scientology in some of his early science fiction, I would rather restrict this topic to religious movements which never migrated from the page (or screen) to "the real world" (with the possible exception of Martian grokking).
Don't forget that there was an effort to get Jedi recognized as a religion during either the UK or AU (don't remember which) census.
Can someone find me any material on jedi being made a recognized religion?
Oh, and I guess scientology should go under the pulp cult fiction board? =P
Try Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedi_census_phenomenon
By the way, this was the first hit on Google for jedi census.
Check out South Park tonight.
Another fictional religion:
Sirtism: The adoration of the Greek goddess Marina Sirtis.
(Headed by "Pope" John A. Lang)
hey JAL, can you explain the details of this religion? the traditions, the holy scriptures etc...
Well, everybody knows that the proper ending to all prayers is, "Hands off! She's mine!", instead of "Amen".
clothing would probably be very conservative... none of those bunny suits...
(none of anything...)
By John A. Lang on Monday, August 12, 2002 - 07:48 pm:
The Temple of Marina Sirtis - Goddess of the Planet Earth.
Bow down & worship her you heathens!
======
On the create your own religion thread...
Sirtism explained:
All women in the church would wear an outfit worn by Marina either in "Star Trek" or other tv / movie appearances. "Special blessings" go to the women who wear that provocative blue dress from "Man of the People" (STTNG) or the swimsuit from "Inside Man" (VOY)
As ScottN indicated, "Amen" would be replaced by "Hands Off! She's mine!"
Marina's Birthday is an Holy Day of Obligation. On that day people in the church must watch Marina's "finer moments" by watching "Death Wish 3", "The Wicked Lady", "Paradise Lost" and "Blind Date" (if ya' know what I mean!)
On weekdays, church members must watch "Deanna Troi related episodes" from STTNG and VOY (IE "The Child", "The Price", "Man of the People", "Inside Man" etc)
Daily adoration of Marina's publicity shots is mandatory.
Internet surfing for Marina's images is also mandatory on a weekly basis. (To see if any new ones pop up)
10% of church members' income must be spent on obtaining new Marina Sirtis related items.
Church members must have a "Playmates version" of Deanna Troi in their homes. (use of candles and incense in your "shrine to Marina" is optional)
Additionally..."special blessings" go to the women of the congregation that wear that "Troi-goddess" dress from "Hollow Pursuits"
Forgot one:
Members of the congregation must write on a weekly basis to MGM to release "The Wicked Lady" to region 1 DVD and to the studio that produced "Paradise Lost" to release that movie to region 1 DVD so we can all enjoy watching "Marina's goodies"
Isn't there some faith healer cult I could join instead?
How am I supposed to find that someone special if I have to do all that?
Fool! Don't you know that to Sirtists, Ms. Sirtis *IS* that "someone special"?
I wonder how Mrs. ScottN likes having that manditory Marina Sirtis Wall paper surrounding the bed...
or having being forced to wear the official Marina Sirtis bunny suits...
Of course, the real question is what becomes of the unbelievers of this religion... Are they fed to the lions? beheaded?
Unbelievers are forced to watch:
"Spock's Brain"
"The Way To Eden" and
"Shades of Grey"
for all eternity.
John, don't be such a Herbert, man!
well at least we don't have to watch the episode whose name we dare not speak...
In that case, I willfully denounce the teachings of Sirtism.
Steppin' in to Eden...YEAH, BROTHER!
Steppin' in to Eden...YEAH, BROTHER!
No more trouble for my body or my mind
Gonna' live like a king over all that I can find
Gonna' eat the fruit and throw away the rind.
YEAH, BROTHER!
BTW...people who renounce Sirtism have to watch..."PROFIT & LACE" for all eternity.
:P
Auugggghhhh!!! He said it!!! HE SAID THE NAME!!!!!
Call me a heretic, John, but I was always more of a Dr. Crusher man.
Oops! Shouldn't have said that... Can I now expect serious trouble with the Sirtis Inquisition?
Nah! Nobody expects the Sirtis Inquisition...
Me too, Duke.
Gates McFadden is the second person of "The Trinity"
First Person: Marina Sirtis
Second Person: Gates McFadden
Third Person: Grace Lee Whitney
Therefore, when "we" start "Mass" at the "1st United Church of Marina Sirtis", we begin with:
"In the name of Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden and Grace Lee Whitney...HANDS OFF, THEY'RE MINE!"
the tv show Battlestar Galactica, the 1978 version-- the Council of 12, and their Lords of Kobol
well as JAL knows... we klingons had killed our gods... so we can do the same to yours...
=======
But, in order to turn this back into a nit and discussion board...
What about the bajoran's religion constructed around the Prophets?
Another fictional religion:
Scpiptology:
A religion where misspelling words is considered a "holy act".
