More to the point, when did the major networks give a hoot?
It probably has something to do with the recent upsurge in FCC crackdowns. Which in turn is probably instigated by the Parents' Television Council urging people to write the FCC whenever material the PTC deems objectionable is aired.
In other words, when not caring started to cost them money and consumer goodwill.
And started to hurt them when the powerbroker's agendas are questioned.
