Fox Mulder

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: XFiles: The Kitchen Sink is out there...: Characters: Fox Mulder
By Hans Thielman on Friday, January 15, 1999 - 2:24 pm:

Mulder used to be a profiler of serial killers. Would "Silence of the Lambs" be in his video collection?

By Nyla on Saturday, January 16, 1999 - 7:28 am:

LOL! Wasn't he ISP? I don't have Grotesque on tape so I can't check.

By MikeC on Monday, February 01, 1999 - 3:10 pm:

One of the most-asked, but never fully agreed upon questions. Is Mulder Jewish? Some evidence points to this ("Drive", "The Pine Bluff Variant", "Kaddish", David Duchovny), but other episodes paint him as a atheist or at least, an agnostic. ("Revelations", etc.)

By The Twelfth Man on Monday, February 01, 1999 - 4:33 pm:

On behalf of the International Jewish Conspiracy, it is my duty to ask what PineBluff had to do with M's religion. I don't remember the ep, I didn't particularly like it.

By The Twelfth Man on Monday, February 01, 1999 - 4:36 pm:

Incidentally, "Drive" doesn't necessarily point to M's Jewishness. He could be humoring a dangerous man with a gun. If he were really Jewish, I doubt that he'd be throwing out lines like "On behalf...", but then again, I do...

If there really is an International Jewish Conspiracy, how come I'm not getting my cut? :-)

To -12- :

"The Pine Bluff Variant" involves the following: a deadly flesh-eating biotoxin; Mulder in jogging clothes; Mulder getting his finger broken; Mulder infiltrating a terrorist group; a bank robbery. I do not remember what light (if any) was shed upon Mulder's religious beliefs.

For more information, just check the synopsis in the Fifth Season episodes.

By MikeC on Tuesday, February 02, 1999 - 11:08 am:

This is stretching it, but in "Pine Bluff", Mulder uses the alias--"Kaplan", which is a Jewish surname. This could mean nothing (and it is a reference to "North By Northwest", anyway).

In "Miracle Man", Mulder, as in "Kaddish", makes mention of Christ's resurrection from the dead.

In "Gethsemane", Mulder seems like an atheist, as he does in quite a few episodes. However, he does know quite a bit about the Bible, as shown in "Miracle Man" and "The Field Which I Died".

By Dori-Ann on Tuesday, February 02, 1999 - 2:44 pm:

I have a prof. who was Jewish and is now an Atheist... in other words such things happen. Also, it is not that unusual for (Atheists esp.) to be able to quote the Bible (and other religious texts) simply because a) Christianity is the dom. religion in the US and people tend to pick up bits and pieces whether they want to or not and b) if he is in fact and Atheist, he may have read/memorized parts of the Bible simply to use them in arguments with religious folks.

By MikeC on Tuesday, February 02, 1999 - 3:43 pm:

Yes, it is very easy for religious people to lose faith, and vice versa. It's just that Mulder seems to...well...flip-flop. In some episodes, he's an obvious atheist (any episode in which Scully has a religious battle, for instance). In some, he's merely flippant, possibly agnostic, possibly not. (Miracle Man) HOWEVER, while Mulder could indeed be Jewish, does that mean he practices Judaism? No, he could just have Jewish heritage, and that much is pretty obvious (Mulder grousing at the Nazi storeowner in "Kaddish", his remarks to Crump in "Drive"). But does Mulder have religious feelings or not?

By Stillanonfornow on Tuesday, February 02, 1999 - 8:01 pm:

okay, it couldn't be the nose, could it, hmm?
or maybe his "yadda yadda" style of speaking?
no, he couldn't be jewish. His mother would have showed up and cleaned his apartment and told him to stop hanging out with that gentile shiksah!
I could picture his mother chasing him with a rolling pin, however....

By Jewish Mother on Wednesday, February 03, 1999 - 10:14 am:

"Gentile shiksah" is redundant! Now, eat mein kinder, you shouldn't be so skinny!

By Nyla on Thursday, February 04, 1999 - 6:28 am:

Upon careful examination of Mulder/DD's face, (pausing occasionally to wipe the
drool off my chin) I think that his nose has been broken some time in the past. Not
surprising, considering Mulder's insurance people are trying desperately to
cancel his policy

By Kellkan on Thursday, February 04, 1999 - 10:39 am:

and two different-colored eyes. trippy. (also a shameless drooler).

By Dori-Ann on Thursday, February 04, 1999 - 2:03 pm:

I think Mulder's prob. Agnostic... This would explain why he "flip-flops" so much... he could really not be sure of that particular Truth... However, I will say that I could buy that kind of wishy washiness in a younger person... or anyone else for that matter, but not from the "I'm right about everything, I know the Truth" kinda guy Mulder is...

By Mike Konczewski on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 7:25 am:

Mulder has shown that he has knowledge about many religions, including paganism, Christianity, and Judaism. However, he looked blank when Scully explained to him some details about saints, which leaves me to believe he's not Catholic. I think we can rule out Islam and the Eastern faiths, too, just as a given (I mean, come on, the guy grew up on Martha's Vineyard!).

Perhaps Mulder's parents were of mixed faith, with Mrs. Mulder being Jewish and Mr. Mulder Christian. That would lead to a possibility that he was raised in a non-observant household.

By Omer on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 10:38 am:

Well, Mulder's father was christian as we saw in his funural... I think Mulder is both a jew and an atheist. That's not a contrudiction - I am one

By MikeC on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 1:16 pm:

Isn't Woody Allen one, too? I mean, he's obviously Jewish, but I believe he is a known atheist.

What would be a contradiction is if he was atheist, and practiced Judaism.

By Nyla on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 1:22 pm:

So, Omer, is it that you are racially a Jew bu you don't believe in God? Just
curious..

By The Twelfth Man on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 2:49 pm:

Nyla, please rephrase. There is no Jewish "race".
He was born into a family that practiced the Jewish faith, but no longer believes in G-d.

-12-

By MikeC on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 3:35 pm:

Technically, if he was born into a direct Hebrew lineage (stretching back to Abraham or David), wouldn't that mean he would be of the Jewish race?

By Omer on Saturday, February 06, 1999 - 9:38 am:

well... jewish 'race'isn't the word... it's the jewish PEOPLE. To me, judaisem is a nationality, and also that nationality is closely related to jewish religion, it isn't actually the same. Kind of like the English and the church in the UK

By Lauren on Monday, March 15, 1999 - 8:46 pm:

Didn't Mulder reveal during his past-life regression in "The Feild Where I Died" that he used to be a Jewish woman?

-drooler #3-

By Omer on Wednesday, March 17, 1999 - 6:57 am:

well, that episode doesn't count. A because Kristan Clocke can't act if the MilleniuM will depend on it, and b, because it directly conflicts with 'Apocrypha'

By Chris Booton on Tuesday, April 27, 1999 - 5:03 pm:

Is the person who plays Mulders Mother the same person who plays Jill's mother on Home improvment? I was thinking of an episode with her in it (x-files) while a re0run of home imporvment was on with Jill's mother and they look a lot the same.

By Questioner on Wednesday, May 05, 1999 - 2:17 pm:

Does anyone think Mulder's voice is sexy, like my mother does?

By Mattpesti on Thursday, May 06, 1999 - 6:19 pm:

When was the last time anyone on television showed any kind of intrest in an organized religion? I mean other than the Simpsons, it's like a part of the lives of a great maijority of Americans just diasspears on television. Unless it's a fitting sterotype

By Omer on Saturday, May 08, 1999 - 7:31 am:

well, thank God for that :-)

By John on Thursday, November 11, 1999 - 7:13 pm:

In one ep Mulder said that satan can quote Scripture to suit his purposes. For him to know that he would have to be brought up in a Bible believing church, i.e. any form of Christianity or Judaism that teaches from the Bible but he could have departed from it when he left home.
Judaism is the religion Hebrew/Israelite/Israeli is the nationalty/race.
A couple of years ago I saw a show where a rabbi was saying that because so many Jews died in the holocaust it was necessary for them to reborn as non-Jews.

By ScottN on Thursday, November 11, 1999 - 10:50 pm:

Sorry, John, but Satan is strictly Christian, not Judaic.

And that so-called Rabbi was talking out of his *SS.

By Luigi Novi (Luigi_novi) on Thursday, August 09, 2012 - 3:23 pm:

No way. Is this just a tabloid/gossip site rumor?

I didn't even know that Duchovny and Tea Leoni divorced!

By Josh M (Joshm) on Thursday, August 16, 2012 - 3:05 am:

That article says they've been "quietly" divorced, so I guess they kept it out of the media if it's true.
