So why was there no other way for Kirsten to kill the trinity than by torching, at a time when the firefighters were already battling hard with fires in the vicinity? What about the traditional methods against vampires: stake in the heart, cutting the head off (hammering a carrot in the ears, putting an onion in their mouth...)?
And why did Scullys cross not protect Mulder? Because he isn't faithful to it (roman catholic)? Because the vampires don't believe in it (they are agnostic)?
Phil remarks in the Guide that Mulder bought a longer chain for the cross. After seeing "Ascension" last week, I think that Duane Barry simply ripped the cross off Scully's neck (or the chain broke otherwise), so Mulder would have to buy a new chain to replace the broken one anyway.
Phil also states that this ep. takes place in November because Mulder turns his office calendar to November. However, I don't think that's conclusive evidence; for once, are there really forest fires in november? August or early september I would believe, but isn't November too late (cool) for forest fires? Secondly, how do we know Mulder doesn't simply turn the calendar to a girl he likes instead of the right month? (Was it really May when the X-Files were closed down, since the calendar was on May?)
Was it a mistranslation, or does Mulder really say that John has "4th-degree burns"? (During the discussion with the doc about porphyria). I thought that the scale for burns stopped with 3rd degree.
Only the cross would have really worked, but it would require faith, too.
How did John survive being exposed to the sun? All vampire lore that I'm aware of this is fatal, depending on the level of exposure which should've had plenty in this case.
Is it me or does the first several eps of the second season all take place in November?
constanze: are there really forest fires in november?
The ep takes place in southern CA; it's always hot and dry there.

You heard correctly and yes, 4th degree burns are a thing.
