Roland
Synopsis: Dr. Ronald Surnow, a aeronautical researcher, is killed in a wind tunnel by an experimental jet engine while Roland, the mentally-handicapped janitor watches. Mulder and Scully investigate, and the scientists on the team reveal that Dr. Arthur Gamble, one of their team members, died in a car accident just recently. Talking to Roland reveals no illuminating facts, but later, Roland murders another doctor on the team by forcing his head into liquid nitrogen and smashing it. Examining the crime scene, the agents find that someone accessed Dr. Gamble's computer files on the night of the murder. Mulder suspects that Dr. Gamble may not really be dead, but it turns out that the doctor's brain has been cryogenically frozen. On a hunch, Mulder uses a composite-manipulation program to change Dr. Gamble features, and discovers that Roland is Dr. Gamble's twin. Mulder supposes that Dr. Gamble may be manipulating Roland to commit the murders, and also to finish his research. The remaning doctor on the team, Dr. Nollette, hears Mulder's theory and sabotages Dr. Gamble's brain jar, causing it to slowly overheat. Meanwhile, Roland manages to complete Dr. Gamble's experiments, pushing the experimental jet engine to Mach 15. Dr. Nollette arrives with a gun, revealing that he intends to take the credit for Gamble's work. Gamble causes Roland to throw Nollette into the wind chamber, and has Roland start the engine again, intending to kill Nollette in the same way as Surnow. Mulder and Scully arrive and ask Roland to shut down the engine. As Gamble's brain dies, Roland remembers the code and shuts the system down.
