Shapes

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: XFiles: Season One: Shapes
Synopsis: Jim Parker and his son Lyle are attacked one night by a wild animal, which Jim is able to shoot. Examining the body, Jim finds not an animal, but a Native American named Joseph Goodensnake. Mulder and Scully interview Jim, who tells them that an animal had been mutilating his cattle lately. An examination of Goodensnake's body reveals enlarged incisors, but Scully is not allowed to peform an autopsy, which is forbidden under the traditions of Goodensnake's tribe. At Goodensnake's funeral, Mulder reveals that the case they are on is similar to the very first X-File, opened by J. Edgar Hoover, and in which the body of a human was found when the shooter believed they were killing a wild animal. Lyle Parker arrives to pay his respects, but is chased off by Joseph's sister, Gwen. Later, Jim Parker is found dead, mutilated in the same way as the cattle, and Lyle Parker is found, naked and shivering, lying nearby. Scully takes Lyle to the hospital, while Mulder is taken to see Ish, a Native American wise man, who claims that the attacks are the result of a Manitou, a evil spirit that turns a man into a wild beast. Mulder immediately suspects Gwen, but she claims she saw a wild animal attack Jim Parker. Mulder realizes that Lyle Parker was turned into a Manitou by Goodensnake's attack on him, and rushes back to the Parker ranch, where Scully is being attacked by Lyle in his animal form. Mulder manages to kill the creature, which changes back to Lyle after his death.
