Beyond the Sea

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: XFiles: Season One: Beyond the Sea
Synopsis: Scully has a dream of her father one night. Moments later, she is woken up by a call from her mother: Scully's father has had a heart attack and is dead. After the death, Scully is anxious to get back to work. Mulder is interested in a kidnapping case that is a copycat of another that occurred one year earlier. Mulder's interest is because of Luther Lee Boggs, a death row inmate who claims to have psychic abilities and can see clues about the kidnapped couple, which he wants to trade in exchange for a life sentence. Mulder interviews Boggs but decides that he's a fraud. But as Mulder and Scully leave, Boggs begins to sing "Beyond the Sea," which was the song played at the funeral of Scully's father. Following tips given by Boggs, she finds a building where there is evidence that the kidnapped couple were held captive there. Mulder still is doubtful of Boggs's ability, believing that Boggs is an accomplice in the crime. They visit Boggs a second time, and he informs Scully of the kidnapper's present location. Agents manage to rescue one of the captives, but the kidnapper escapes with the other after shooting Mulder. Scully angrily tells Boggs that if he had anything to do with Mulder's wounding, she'll be happy to let him die in the gas chamber. Boggs tells her that he will reveal more once he gets his deal, which Scully tries to get for him, but cannot. Scully lies to him about the deal, and Boggs tells her the whereabouts of the kidnapper, telling her afterward that he knew she lied. Scully and other agents rescue the other victim using Boggs's tips. Boggs offers to let Scully talk to her father if she comes to his execution, but she doesn't show, going instead to Mulder's bedside in the hospital. She has realized that Boggs couldn't tell her anything she didn't already know.

Maybe something was said regarding this and I missed it but it seemed that the kidnapping case was resting entirely on what Boggs could tell M&S. There was no mention of a task force or any other agents working on the case besides what our two heroes are doing. Mulder made it very clear early on that he believed Boggs was a fraud yet he continued to return and talk to him instead of coordinating a search.
