Fallen Angel

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: XFiles: Season One: Fallen Angel
Synopsis: As the episode begins, an unidentified flying object crashes in Townsend, Wisconsin. Colonel Calvin Henderson sends out a team to clean it up. Mulder, on a tip from Deep Throat, manages to sneak into the site and sneak a few pictures, but he is caught and thrown into the lockup. While there, he meets Max Fenig, a member of an organization called NICAP. Scully gets Mulder out, and informs of a hearing being called because of his actions that could discontinue the X-Files altogether. Returning to the motel room, Mulder finds his things ransacked and Max Fenig trying to crawl out the window. Fenig tells Mulder that he knows all about him, and he shows Mulder his equipment for tracking UFOs. His radio transmissions tell of Deputy Wright, who was the first at the scene and ended up at the hospital, severly burned, as well as the firemen he called to investigate. While at the hospital, Mulder and Scully see several soldiers in Henderson's team being brought in with the same burns, and Scully helps treat them, equating their conditions to survivors of the Hiroshima blast. Mulder returns to Fenig's trailer to find Fenig having a seizure on the ground. Fenig claims it is epilepsy, but Mulder finds a scar behind Fenig's ear also seen in alien abductees. Mulder tries to bring Scully back to look at Max, but he has disappeared. Tracking him to a warehouse, Mulder finds Fenig suspended in light. Henderson's men arrive, and Fenig disappears in a flash of light. Mulder arrives at the hearing and defends his actions, to deaf ears. But the hearing is called off by Deep Throat, who tells the committee head to "keep your friends, but your enemies closer."

So why does the alien pilot flash the soldiers at all, if he is invisible? Is he angry at them?

Why do they put the alien inside a laser fence with big holes and no soldier to stand guard or automated defences and alarms when the alien leaves?

I thougt that the highest degree of burn rates was 3rd degree, not 5th and 6th degree.

I missed the first 10 mins., so what is the alien decector device phil mentions in his guide? I only saw an infrared device before the soldiers storm the warehouse, but infrared is pretty normal tech.

When mulder puts max fenig on his bed after the seizure, he doesn't take his glasses off. Mulder doesn't seem to wear glasses often that he doesn't know how easy you can break them sleeping with them. Or was he so puzzled by the scar?

Mulders glasses, when he looks at the photos of other scars, seem to be flat again. (Does he simply want to look cool and serious?)

If he would have told scully that only two other people have this scar behind their left ear, and max fenig behind his right, his case would have been very week, so maybe that's why he mislead her.

The filming location where Deep Throat and McGrath (or is it simply Grath?) have their discussion in was also used as the Tollan's new homeworld in an episode of Stargate SG1. I believe it was also used in an episode of Andromeda but I'm not sure which one. It involved the giant robots Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum on a planet and some kind of peace negotiation was going on.

Apparently, the lieutenant at the beginning in NORAD moved down a few levels in Cheyenne Mountain after this episode and joined the SGC. Yes, its another Stargate/X-Files actor crossover! The lieutenant is Brent Stait, who played Lieutenant/Major Ferretti, one of the few survivors of the Abydos mission, in the first few episodes of Stargate SG1. He would also play Michael in the Atlantis episode "Allies" when Conner Trinner wasn't available. He is also know to fans of the genre as Rev Bem on "Andromeda" and an appearance as Mason on the new "Battlestar Galactica." He would later return to X-Files as Timothy Mayhew in "Tunguska" and "Terma".

This episode reinforces the view that there are people within the FBI itself seeking to quash Mulder's work. McGrath's efforts to break Mulder make this very apparent. So, my general question is, if TPTB within the FBI don't want Mulder to succeed, why does he receive so much assistance from Bureau scientists, technicians, agents, etc.? Wouldn't they work to prevent others within the Bureau from helping Mulder, or even ordering them outright not to?

That wasn't to contain the alien, just to alert those monitoring when something crosses it. Speaking of which, that fence seems quite advanced for the mid-90s. Phil mentions this fence because normally we wouldn't see the actual beam between posts, and we only see it now because it looks cool/futuristic, but keeping the beams invisible should be prefered as to not give away what it's for.

I'm fairly certain this is what Phil was referring to, and yeah that tech has been around a while. I thought that 'alien detector' thing a bit funny. I guess I thought these aliens to be cold-blooded. An odd notion when I ask why they would they want to colonize our planet.

Jdequin:So, my general question is, if TPTB within the FBI don't want Mulder to succeed, why does he receive so much assistance from Bureau scientists, technicians, agents, etc.?
Adding to that list, Mulder and Scully's expense accounts have got to be outrageous! If the FBI ever needed to cut their budget I know a good place to start :-)
McGrath's questioning of Mulder was quite unprofessional to say the least. He was way too emotional and seem to take it personally.

The military group that is undertaking Operation Falcon is not very uniformed in their weaponry, particularly for those in the black BDUs. I counted at least five different sidearms/submachine guns amongst them, none of which would've done a better job than the M16s the camo'ed soldiers wear.

Speaking of sidearms; I'm not watching these eps in order, nor reading about them in the Guide in order so this may be mentioned either there or another board, but when did Mulder get a new gun? Last I noticed he was using a Beretta but now he's using a Glock. Scully however is still using her Walther PP, which can't be her issued sidearm.

I don't really understand the aliens' motivation in this ep. Was the pilot on its way to abduct Max when it crashed? If so, why didn't it just call for a ride and forget about Max until another time instead of sticking around and potenially get caught or killed?
