Nothing Important Happened Today [part 1 of 2]

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: XFiles: Season Nine: Nothing Important Happened Today [part 1 of 2]

Well, in my opinion, that kinda sucked. I don't know about anyone else but after last year I was about ready to see the X-Files end, and now we have more.

And it wasn't even very good, to me at least. It just seemed to drag on, and on, and I don't know, but I miss Mulder and Scully, Doggett doesn't do much for me, and Ryes either (other than she's pretty).

Also, did there seem to be a lot of skin this week, it was classy non-gratuitous skin, but skin none the less.

And the new credits, they were very nice and showy, but I miss the old ones. All the animated stuff just seemed out of place, like a CGI-Enterprise in TOS.

It was nice to see the Lone Gunmen again, and have Langley still be blue. Although since it's been like a year since the show was ripped off the air, I don't remember why he was blue.

But Frohikey did get the best line of the night with his "What else are we going to do?" line.

A completely different show. That's not a slam, nor a compliment. But an observation--this ain't yer your older sibling's X-Files.

POINTS

1. I like the new opening credits. Nice seeing Mitch Pileggi finally make the opening, and it's nice that the series has copped to the fact that this is a new series, after all.

2. Robert Patrick is just so cool. Doggett is a very neat character, mainly because he's a walking mass of development. Reyes was also a much more better written character than last season, at least so far.

3. Cary Elwes, nice to see you, do you play something other than evil schmucks or clueless goobers? Lucy Lawless, why are you in this episode?

4. Good points--the cliffhanger; the Lone Gunmen's snide references to their show getting the axe; the first scene between Doggett and Scully; Cary Elwes; the majority of the performances.

5. Bad points--all scenes with Scully's baby (PLOT DEVICE, PLOT DEVICE!); any scene after the first between Doggett and Scully (I would have preferred to have Scully mad at Doggett for a few episodes); Mulder going finito again (don't mind it but it needed better writing); and Skinner's bizarre character motivation (he won't help Doggett investigate Kersh, but he WILL break into the water facility?). And what about Agent Crane? Doesn't anyone care that he went boom with Noel?

Football caused it to run 15 minutes later...VCR set to normal time....oops!

Can someone give me a recap of the final act? Thanks

By MikeC on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 - 1:16 pm:

The Lone Gunmen look up some info on the guy that got killed in the teaser, finding out he was fascinated with water. They also connect this to the death of the worker at the water reclamation plant.

Doggett and Skinner head out to the plant, and find a folder about the fluorine-like substance that was discussed in the teaser. As they prepare to leave, AD Cary Elwes and his goon squad arrive, chasing the duo. Skinner accidentally bangs his knee, and is captured, although AD Elwes (genuinely?) thinks that Skinner is helping him chase Doggett. Doggett hides in one of the water tanks, but suddenly Lucy Lawless appears at the bottom of the tank, and drags Doggett down!

Ah, but can AD Cary Elwes speak with an English Accent?

It is certianly true that The X-Files is not the same show, and never will be... and I wish that it had been allowed to die grasefully while still in its prime... But all things considered, I thought this wasn't a bad episode. Certianly not an action episode, which is an odd way to open a season, but I suppose they had a lot to set up since there are so many changes happening to the show.

One touch I liked was when Ryes broke her pencil. She then looks up and spots an alternitive to re-sharpening the one she already has: just pluck from the ceiling all the ones Mulder had flung up there!

I missed this episode and my craptastic VCR is on the blink. Can anybody tell me how they explained Mulder's final bye-bye? At the end of last season he looked all ready to settle down into fatherhood.

I believe Lucy Lawless's character profile was "nekkid chick in water tank." And yeah, you can't live off Xena residuals forever...(well, maybe you can, but it's got to be nice doing something that doesn't involve swords or an iron breastplate).

My thoughts about this ep:

After waiting terribly long for the last season, I was surprised that the whole credit sequence had been changed, and that mulder doesn't even appear anymore in the credits!

When the black-haired girl presses the leg of the water-guy down to make the car drive into the water I wondered how strong this girl is. Also she holds the water-guy down with one hand around the ankle. But if she can survive underwater, maybe she is incredible strong, too.

I'm not a chemist, and maybe this chloramine stuff will be cleared up in the 2nd part, but it sure confused me, esp. as the x-files websites says that chloramines will be used to replace the chlorine in the drinking water. Heres what I know about chloramines and water:
- Fluor is put into drinking water to strengthen the teeth and prevent karies, although critical sources say that fluor is a by-product of aluminium production which the industry got rid of by claiming it helps prevents karies because it hardens the teeth, although studies show what you eat and if you brush your teeth the right way is much better to prevent karies. Also, the problem if you put sth. in the drinking water is that some people will get too much, resulting in damage to inner organs.
- chlorine, on the other hand, is used in swimming pools and sometimes in drinking water, to disinfectate the water. In drinking water, it should be used sparingly, and only if the available water is polluted, and no ground water available.
In swimming pools, the chlorine (which is a gas) reacts with the organic matter in the water (e.g. people who pee into it) producing bound chlorine. Also, a certain amount of free chlorine and bound chlorine will gas out of the water, forming a cloud over the surface of the water. This gas cloud is known as chloramines, and studies show that they can cause cancer and kidney damage, esp. in babies, young children and teens (that is the reason that baby swimming, though it would be healthy for the psyche of the children and parents, does more harm than good. Baby swimming in a lake isn't helpful, either, as babies loose too much heat, so they need heated water, which then has to be disinfected).
When you put chlorine in the drinking water, you have a similar problem: the gas will leave the water, people will breath it in and it will have bad effects on health.
Why it would be better to change from chloride to chloramine for disinfecting I can'T understand - the best thing would be to clean up the water, then you don't need disinfectant. (but americans don't understand the value of a clean enviroment, I have heard.)

Scullys baby is about 2 days old and has telekinetic powers??? Sound unbelievable to me. I'd have no problem with telekinesis, mind, but with the speed with which williams masters this skill. Babies need more than 1 year to walk, over 3 years to talk, 3 months to start seeing and grasping things,... but moving this plaything at age 2 days?

Scully looks very fit, too. I would have thought she wants to stay in bed for at least a week or two, not conducting lenghty autopsies.

BTW, its really lucky that they find the marks on the ankle at all. I mean, scully knows this autopsy is important, shouldn't she be going over every inch of the surface with a magnifiying glass? Yes, normally you only do organs, but this wasn't normal, dogget wanted her to find sth. extraordinary.

Well, she's obviously a woman of many talents.
