Kersh Becomes X-Files Regular

James Pickens Jr., who has played FBI Deputy Director Alvin Kersh as a recurring character since season six of The X-Files, told SCI FI Wire that he was "surprised" by the offer to join the series as a regular for the show's ninth year. "The character got such a reaction on a lot of fronts, which I wasn't aware of," Pickens said. "I guess they decided the character could be a little more vital in terms of the storylines."

He added, "We'll have to wait and see what it means in terms of the day-to-day on the show. People don't know who Kersh is, what's behind the face, what his intentions are. I like that. It keeps people guessing and it keeps people wanting to see him, to see which way he's going to go."

The actor, who's also playing a recurring role on the series Philly, laughed when informed that a whopping 34 percent of those participating in an online poll of fans think Kersh will "kick the bucket" this season. "If it happens, fine," said Pickens, whose only other genre credits are Sphere and the SF comedy Rocket Man. "That's the nature of the business. I don't worry about that stuff. Our whole career is spent going from one job to another. So I'll enjoy the time that I've got on The X-Files and make it work to my advantage. And if it's time to go, then I'll press on to something else."

mmm. that's news to me.

I have to add my vote the kill Kersh list. He's a fun character to hate, I'd love to see him get a lead salad.

I've been wondering for ages if we're going to see a nipple on the back of Kersh's neck.....(have I got the right programme?)

The mythology steams along toward the finale in the two-parter, "Provenance" and "Providence," tentatively airing March 3rd and March 10th. Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz pen both scripts that address William, the history of the Super Soldiers and a closer look at the spaceship. Kim Manners directs "Provenance" and Chris Carter helms "Providence." The episodes include Skinner, the Lone Gunmen, Brad Follmer and Kersh, as well as introduce another new, secretive character. Be on the lookout for a set report that features filming in the desert and behind-the-scenes photos from the episodes in the second issue of the Official Magazine, which is scheduled to hit newsstands on March 21st.

There's a thin line between life and death in Steve Maeda's script for "Audrey Pauley." Kim Manners directs 9X13, which takes place in what seems to be two different hospitals. It will tentatively air March 17th.

Doggett revisits an old case that he worked on as a New York City policeman when new evidence rises to the surface in "Underneath." Episode 9X09 marks the directorial debut of Executive Producer John Shiban from his own script. It will tentatively air March 31st.

A little boy with a vivid imagination is at the center of "Scary Monsters" (9X12), which is written by Tom Schnauz and features the return of Agent Leyla Harrison. Dwight Little directs the episode scheduled to air in April.

Burt Reynolds has started shooting his guest-starring role in "Improbable" (9X14), written and directed by Chris Carter. Reynolds plays Mr. Burt, a mysterious guy who knows his way around a card deck and keeps popping up in the agents' investigation. The episode will tentatively air in April.

Wondering what happened after the final episode of The Lone Gunmen series? Answers are coming in 9X15. When Morris Fletcher returns to haunt the Gunmen, the three amigos go searching for Yves Harlow's hidden background -- with a little help from their old pal, Jimmy.

Vince Gilligan, John Shiban and Frank Spotnitz join forces on the script for "Jump the Shark," directed by Cliff Bole. Michael McKean, Zuleikha Robinson and Stephen Snedden all guest star in the show that airs in April.

I'm generally amused by the title "Jump the Shark", mostly because a lot of person think the X-Files did that a long time ago.
