The X-Files Calling it Quits

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: XFiles: The X-Files Calling it Quits
By Amos, X-Files/EFC Moderator (Apainter) on Thursday, January 17, 2002 - 6:23 am:

Chris Carter has announced that the X-Files is ending it's run this this May, meaning that the Ninth Season will be the last.

By Amos on Thursday, January 17, 2002 - 6:24 am:

Personally, I think it's time for the X-Files to leave the stage. And I personaly think it should have happened two years ago. When Mulder left, they should have just ended it there.

By Anonymous on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 - 2:43 pm:

and not a moment too soon, IMHO. They should have ended it with the baby and the kiss. I mean, just about all the loose ends are pretty much tied up -- we get it already. It's an alien invasion. I'll look forward to the second movie, but the TV show is looking old, tired, and lame.

By Dean on Friday, March 08, 2002 - 6:53 am:

I disagree. I think Doggett and Reyes added something new to the show and it could have continued on a different path with them as the main characters. I think that ending the show will difinately benefit the second movie. There is only so much CC can do with the mythology and ending it now and continuing it in the movie will definately be worth waiting for.

By Anonymous on Monday, March 25, 2002 - 6:52 am:

I also like Doggett and Reyes, but if that's the direction the TV show is to go, then let's have Mulder and Scully ride off into the sunset already. The X Files is and always has been about the team of Mulder & Scully. Since Mulder is AWOL, Scully is hanging around like a fifth wheel. Let Doggett & Reyes do the weekly TV grind and have Mulder & Scully for the movie.

By CornPone on Tuesday, April 16, 2002 - 10:07 am:

The X-Files: New Orleans. Does anyone else think that the powers-that-be should have taken a page from Law & Order (3 different shows) and just spun off Doggett and Reyes to a NEW X-Files division down in New Orleans? Have D & R handle the XF cases in the southern part of the country and say that Mulder and Scully would handle the UFO cases (even if the main show ended that could still be implied).

I think the main reason the ratings took such a big nosedive this season is that it was obvious that D & R were going to replace M & S. However, if Chris Carter had said: "Oh no. This is a whole new show with different types of cases.", people might have bought that.

By Jesse on Monday, June 10, 2002 - 3:58 pm:

I disagree with D & R or a spin-off. "Law and Order", "Law and Order: SVU", and "Law and Order: CI" are 3 different shows with three different casts, BUT they are about the same thing: solving crimes through police work. Yeah, SVU focuses on rapes and sexual crimes, CI tends to have lots of psychos, and the reg L&O is usually a straight murder, BUT the basic element remains the same.

X-Files isn't a paranormal version of a mystery show. Its main claim to fame--its draw, really--has been the myth. Like it or not, the mythology has drawn viewers back season after season. The mythology has spawned the online discussion boards, the conversations between fans, etc. We all watched the show to learn "the truth".
I can't imagine that a spin-off, with different characters and no mythology, would be the least bit engrossing.

By CornPone on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 - 10:15 am:

Jesse, I assumed that Chris Carter would have created a different non-UFO mythology for a "The X-Files: New Orleans" show.

By Anonymous on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 1:46 pm:

Millenium sunk like a stone, so I can't imagine anybody buying a whole new XFiles thing someplace else. Maybe Carter is losing his touch.

By supercooladdict on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 5:25 pm:

Millenium had other problems than being an X-Files spin off that brought it down.

It suffered from the 9pm Friday timeslot. It was misrepresented in the press to a degree in the being. It had a lot of revolving door writers and producers. And basically had to play second fiddle to the X-Files.

I always enjoyed Millenium, although it was mixed show most the time.

I also thought Harsh Realm was a pretty promising show. Although Fox burned it to ground rather quick.

By MikeC on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 5:10 pm:

Maybe I'm overly optimistic.

Maybe I'm a nut.

But, but, but--

IF Chris Carter had let Gillian Anderson go...if he had let David Duchovny go (possibly retained Mitch Pileggi)...if he had allowed all traces of the FORMER mythology to go with them (including the ill-advised plots of this last season, such as the Super Soldiers)...

if he had built up a simple, almost stand-alone (with recurring plot threads), less ambitious show (almost like the X-Files' first season) featuring Doggett and Reyes investigating paranormal cases (which the last season basically was anyway):

I think the show would have worked. And I don't just mean artistically. I think it would have done reasonably well in the ratings.

Getting rid of the mythos would have boosted ratings; I know a lot of people who stopped watching because they couldn't keep up. Maybe having a fresh change of location and new supporting characters would have helped too.

I agree though that as it stood, it was time for The X-Files to go.

By Josh M on Thursday, July 03, 2003 - 2:42 pm:

The Lone Gunmen didn't last, why would an would another X-Files spinoff? Because the name was the same?

By MikeC on Friday, July 25, 2003 - 9:19 pm:

The Lone Gunmen didn't last because, I believe, it was a little too muddled. What was it? A hard-hitting spy drama with a continuing story (i.e. the pilot)? An "Avengers"-like, fighting crime wiht a wink (most of the later episodes)? A completely bizarre situation comedy spoof (most of the middle episodes)?

Also, no Robert Patrick. Always bad. :)

By Merat on Saturday, March 29, 2008 - 11:29 pm:

And its back! X-Files 2 is coming out in late July, possibly the 25th. Its only a few months away and it doesn't have a title yet and I've seen very little publicity for it. The rumors are that it won't be a mythology movie like "Fight the Future" was, but a return to the monster of the week format of the early seasons.

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 - 12:20 pm:

It's back. Following in the footsteps of 24, The X-Files will return for six episodes this summer. More here.

Mulder: The money is out there, Scully...

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 - 9:53 am:

As odd as the show was getting the last couple seasons is this even a good idea, or one people were asking for? I'm looking forward to it either way but I'd personally prefer another movie instead. I just hope it's as true to form as the 24 miniseries was with the rest of its show.

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 - 7:32 am:

The money must be out there, Scott. "Cancer Man" and Skinner will make appearances in the revived X-Files. More here.

By Josh M (Joshm) on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 - 9:05 am:

I'm wondering how ol' C.G.B. Spender will come back, seeing as I seem to recall his face melting off due to a helicopters missile.

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 - 12:25 pm:

Josh: Here or The X-Files is Calling it Quits board if we want to be ironic.
What can I say, I'm a sucker for irony :-)

I won't get too in depth just yet, mainly because two eps have already been released and I'd like to re-watch all six once they're out, but during the first ep, My Struggle, Mulder goes on a rant about the conspiracy as he knows it and I'm pretty sure he's said almost exactly the same things in the past. I wouldn't even call that scene exposition, more just stating the obvious. Another thing I wondered about was why did those soldiers blow up that craft instead of commandeer it?

The second ep, Founders Mutation, seems to forget everything that happened in the previous ep; no mention of Tad or Sveta that I heard. Also, although this was business as usual during the series, Mulder would have an idea/theory about something that turns out to be 100% correct.

Why were M & S called to the scene of Sanjay's suicide? Appearing later to interview witnesses sure but not before at least his body was taken away. Once they find Kyle, who was obviously the janitor and seen leaving Sanjay's actual apartment, they for some reason take him straight to Goldman before running any tests of their own. They really turned up the gore factor on this one; just an FYI if anyone who reads this is a bit squeamish.

More to follow and the truth is out there!

By Josh M (Joshm) on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 - 2:46 pm:

I also wondered why you would blow up such a cool aircraft like that. The conspirators must have a ton of them.

Looks like they're going with the Redux explanation again, though with the twist of aliens are real, just more benevolent which... I actually like that idea. But it certainly ignores their portrayal for much of the series before now.

Also elements of Jose Chung's From Outer Space with the idea that it's the government behind much of the alien encounters themselves and the false memories idea.

It was all a bit of a mess, though. My Struggle, indeed. Glad it's supposed to be the worst of the first three.

I thought Founders Mutation was supposed to be more monster-of-the-week, but some mytharc with a medical conspiracy this time, using alien biology to mess with fetuses. That kid moving out of his mom's belly was just a bit disturbing.

Given that The X-Files likely helped pave the way for Heroes (and stories of its kind on TV), that final scene when the siblings meet had a decidedly Heroes vibe to it. Interesting to see.

By Francois Lacombe (Franc0is) on Monday, February 01, 2016 - 11:01 am:

After Scully completes Sanjay's autopsy, she says that he had no obvious physical marks on him, other than the letter opener shoved in his ear. However, the man's eyes were clearly and severely bloodshot. I would call that a physical mark worthy of mention.

NANJAO The way Kyle disposed of his father reminded me of Cronenberg's movie Scanners.

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Tuesday, February 02, 2016 - 9:27 am:

All I'll say about M&S Meet the Were-monster is that while it had some amusing social commentary it probably should've been a couple eps later in this very short season IMO, as to not turn off any casual viewers only half-way through. Or alternatively, save the storyline for additional episodes if any are granted.

By Chris Booton (Cbooton) on Tuesday, February 02, 2016 - 9:50 pm:

Our of curiosity, what was the name the guy gave to the dog? I couldn't quite make it out.

Did the Lizard guy in his Lizard form remind anyone else of a Jem'Hadar?

By ScottN (Scottn) on Tuesday, February 02, 2016 - 11:15 pm:

"Daggoo". It's from Moby Dick.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Tuesday, February 02, 2016 - 11:16 pm:

Nice reference to Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose. "I'm immortal".

By ScottN (Scottn) on Tuesday, February 02, 2016 - 11:22 pm:

A nice link: Easter Eggs in M&S Meet the Were-Monster.

By Chris Booton (Cbooton) on Wednesday, February 03, 2016 - 9:41 pm:

Ah, okay thanks. I thought it sounded something like that.

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Thursday, February 04, 2016 - 12:26 pm:

Cbooton: Did the Lizard guy in his Lizard form remind anyone else of a Jem'Hadar?
Yes indeed sir! I think that was the first thing I thought of.

Thanks for the link Scott! That was a very interesting breakdown of homages, some of which I surprisingly caught.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Friday, February 05, 2016 - 10:07 am:

I'll be honest, the only ones I caught myself were the ringtone and the Kim Manners headstone.

1. The stories of Duchovny and Anderson saying they don't know if there'd be anymore due to their schedules, etc. . . (they were teasing us last January as they obviously know another season or a movie is up ahead as anyone seeing the entire season knows.

2. Wow. Considering that at the end of Season 9 the way we saw CSM being burned right to his skull-- maybe alien DNA can fight fire I guess. :P

3. Uh . . . does anyone get Monica Reyes' decision at all? I was hoping maybe our original suspicion with her and the Morleys would mean she and CSM were in cohoots (i.e. she was the new Fowley), but instead, I just can't totally understand how petty she'd be to just be in league simply because of what he shared. I mean WTF? Considering he likely STILL had a hold on some of the FBI people, etc.

4. We see soldiers dying because of the anthrax that suddenly consumed them. That's quite a turnaround many years later after an effort of a "superhuman army" that was apporached fifteen years or so before.

5. So are Miller and Einstein the new Doggett and Reyes? Please, Chris Carter. You should have figured out by now the X Files IS Mulder and Scully. Step away from giving us similar agents, again, PLEASE. (Einsten, especially, is Scully redux, I mean please).

6. So did Scully keep the name Dagoo, for her new dog? :-) (Hopefully, Mulder told her that would freak her out that the dog was already given a name from a character of Moby Dick). By the way, the were lizard episode is now my favorite meta episode (meta to the max :-) ).

7. So did Sveta die or simply abducted again?

8. So the ultimate question I'm sure at the cliffhanger will be if that's a UFO manned by aliens . . . or humans? Just remember there still was an alien body hunter (with the green blood), the oil, etc., let alone that alien that was killed at Rosewell-- so they do exist, regardless the renewed doubts Mulder had yet again.

Critics call the tenth season uneven. With the exception of the first episode, I think the episodes were pretty good. I'd love to see a mini season like this every year, if it is at all possible. That would minimize clunker episodes from sneaking in. :-)

By Norman Buchwald (Norm) on Sunday, March 20, 2016 - 12:55 pm:

SPOILERS

9. If Scully already had the alien DNA was it when she was abducted or did it come from the cancer cure?

10. If it was when Scully was abducted, since Mulder was also abducted why didn't he have the alien DNA? Or was it counter productive from one becoming a "superhuman zombie"?

By the way, talk about Scully saving the world. :P

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Monday, January 22, 2018 - 2:20 pm:

Is there a board for this and last year's mini-seasons? I'm a bit surprised I couldn't find any posts about them, but then again I didn't look very hard either...

So this the 11th season of X-Files now? I think I began watching on the season premiere, but it seemed to have started in the middle of a plot-line so I'm not sure.

Regarding this board, I believe Gillian has stated that she isn't interested in another mini-season after this one.

By AWhite (Inblackestnight) on Saturday, January 27, 2018 - 8:05 am:

If there's any episode to watch this season, make it the one from this week! (came out 1/24 in the US)

It's one of those tongue-in-cheek eps, but it contains a lot of hilarious scenes that makes you question some of the continuity of the entire show... for a few seconds anyway.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Wednesday, March 07, 2018 - 5:25 pm:

Are you talking about The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat?

If so, I'm guessing you're referring to Skinner's throwaway line at the end. That was hysterical.

By Matthew See (Matthew_see) on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 - 6:13 am:

The X-Files 11.4 The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat guest starred Brian Huskey as Reggie Something who says that he had worked on the X-Files with Mulder and Scully but Mulder and Scully have no memory of him.
This episode came on January 24 2018 and almost two months later on March 13 he was in the Pilot of For The People in which he played a somewhat similar character as he says that he had worked in an agency that no one other than himself believed existed.
