M&S: Friends or More?

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: XFiles: The Kitchen Sink is out there...: M&S: Friends or More?
This page is for discussion of the relationship between Mulder and Scully.
By Deuce on Thursday, February 25, 1999 - 11:31 pm:

Relationship? Or lack of one, I suppose.... And hey, I'm first! Cool!

By Nyla on Saturday, February 27, 1999 - 10:02 am:

Whaddya mean, lack of one!? even friendshippers acknowledge that there is
something even if it is only platonic. Okay, here are my points.
A. all the huggin', cheek/forehead kissing, handholding and the almost kiss in the
movie.
B. the things that they have actually said. Mulder's speeches in the movie and One
Breath, that 'if it's ice tea, it's love' thing, 'Scully, marry me', and all the little risque
jokes. I realize that *some* of these could simply be jokes/mere sexual attraction,
but when you put them all together.
C. They have, to use an overused phrase, gone to the ends of the earth for each other.
This is paticularly true in the movie, and the One Breath arc.

...etc, etc, etc. Where ya been, girl/boy?! Have you had your head stuck under a rock
this whole time?
And yes, I am a shipper.

Rejected Dialogue (Patient X)
Scully: "You'll have to forgive me, Mrs. Spender, but...have you ever felt like a bunch
of people were writing for you and, well, they're drunk?"

By Dori-Ann Granger on Thursday, January 14, 1999 - 8:27 pm:

How about "Tringle"? From the hospital bed... Mulder gazes deepy into Scully's eyes... and she into his... "I love you," he says... "Oh brother," she says... Sounds pretty conclusive to me... at least from Mulder's side of things.

By Nyla on Friday, January 15, 1999 - 5:38 am:

Triangle more or less fits under all those half-joking comments, in my opinion, because Scully didn't take it seriously. Anyway, with the advent of Rain King, we have another shippy speech to list here! YAYYY!!

By Dori-Ann Granger on Friday, January 15, 1999 - 4:24 pm:

Yes, but Mulder was serious...

By Nyla on Saturday, January 16, 1999 - 7:34 am:

That's debatable. I lean toward agreement with you. BTW, are you new, or were you
anonymous before

By L on Saturday, January 16, 1999 - 8:34 am:

I think they love each other, but if anything happened the show would probably suffer.

By Chris Ashley on Saturday, January 16, 1999 - 9:33 pm:

"L" has got to be the shortest handle I've ever seen.

By Nyla on Sunday, January 17, 1999 - 6:18 am:

We could call him/her 'Agent L'. What do you think about that, L? (And BTW,
welcome to the board! Were you anonymous before, or are you new? This is
something that bugs me, so if you could aswer, please..

By Ben Jackson (Bjackson) on Sunday, January 17, 1999 - 12:27 pm:

Mulder could have Scully if he wanted her. Remember "Small Potatoes"? Scully just fell right in. I think Scully apprieciates Mulder's friendship but she wouldn't mind something more, and I think Mulder thinks that their jobs would be hurt by a romantic relationship and, even though he might want one, thinks it's for the best that they keep it entirely plutonic. He expressed his feelings in "Triangle" and even though he knew it wasn't Scully, he still wants her to know how he feels before either one dies.

By Nyla on Sunday, January 17, 1999 - 3:15 pm:

Hmmmmm....I'm considering it. It's actually always kinda irritated me how when
he makes moves, Scully goes right for them. Maybe CC should turn that around a
bit, hm

By Chris Ashley on Sunday, January 17, 1999 - 9:46 pm:

Uh, Ben...I think you mean "platonic" not plutonic. "Platonic" means "of Plato", in this case referring to idealized or generally non-sexual love; "plutonic" means "of money", which is NOT the type of relationship I think anyone envisions for our beloved pair.

By Dori-Ann Granger on Tuesday, January 19, 1999 - 6:34 pm:

Nyla... I've been hanging about for a bit now... I'd call it lurking if one may lurk at a msg board... *smile* I only submit when I think what I have to say a) has value and b) hasn't been said before... I don't think I could contribute much to the tech. side of things (i.e. Trek), but relationships I can keep up with...

My opinion is that Mulder has been attracted to our dear Scully for quite some time now (if not from the begining), and this newest season just reinforces that for me... As to the "half joking" aspect of their relationship that someone alluded (sp?) to before, my "friend" and I did that for five years... Now we're dating. As someone said... there is always that kernal of truth in jokes... Some jokes have more than others... I feel this is the case with Mulder and Scully.

My... I did ramble a bit, didn't I?

By Nyla on Wednesday, January 20, 1999 - 3:20 pm:

Hmmm....Well, welcome to the board! (As to M&S: Hmmmmmmmmm....)

By Deuce on Thursday, January 28, 1999 - 1:22 pm:

I watched "Pilot" last night, and from the looks they shot each other, I'd say there was a mutual physical attraction from the beginning. There's more to the relationship, natch, but you can see that they thought each other were "hot" at first.

By Nyla on Thursday, January 28, 1999 - 4:22 pm:

Any sane female with working eyes would be attracted to Mulder. I'm sure the
same applies to Scully

By Dori-Ann on Tuesday, February 02, 1999 - 3:06 pm:

I think every man "with working eyes" *is* attracted to Scully... How many have there been now, not even including Mulder? It seems like every man that appears on the show is making "googilie" eyes at her and trailing after her like a lost puppy. Meanwhile, Mulder is at home with his *ahem* tapes... and "phone friends."

By Kellkan on Wednesday, February 03, 1999 - 2:26 pm:

I saw a hilarious line that was supposedly cut from an upcoming episode (Arcadia)? on another site-mulder and scully are taking a decontamination shower together. Scully looks at Mulder and says: "My, my, my", to which Mulder replies, "right back at ya, red". pretty funny, considering Gillian Anderson is not a natural redhead!
I think Mulder and scully big-red-heart each other, but I get the feeling that sometimes Mulder struggles with the feeling that he's not good enough for her. The sexual attraction is pretty secondary at this point. a simple affair would never be enough for those two.

By J. Goettsche on Wednesday, February 03, 1999 - 8:03 pm:

I thought that GA's real hair color was reddish brown (or brownish red) like in the Pilot episode, and that she simply had the color enhanced. Kinda like a person with sandy blond hair going platinum.

Getting back on topic... oh my! That exchange does sound racy. But is tandem showering required for decontamination?

By Kellkan on Thursday, February 04, 1999 - 10:55 am:

I've seen Ga's hair quite blond in some pics, but who's to say that was her natural color? no big d.
about that *steamy* shower,I read about it on Tiny Dancer's website (sorry,no url)and I think you're right, it's doubtful that tandem showering is necessary....however, scully and Mulder have been working together for so long, (and she's a doctor), so I don't imagine there's much self-consciousness left between them. also;
If I had something real nasty on me, I'd want to wash it off, and get the clothes off asap.
It wouldn't break my heart if an attractive male friend happened to be in the same boat,....;D

By The Late Well Manicured Man on Thursday, February 04, 1999 - 1:17 pm:

After all this time, why do Mulder and Scully still address each other by their surnames? FBI protocol?

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Thursday, February 04, 1999 - 2:29 pm:

Habit, perhaps? Where I work, everybody calls everybody else by thier first name, even the store manager. However, there is one person (a college student) who is always called by his last name (Tinious) and it's even on his nametag. Besides, this season's ep that was just like "Clive Buckman's Final Repose" makes it quite clear that Scully dosen't like being called by her first name.

By Nyla on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 1:24 pm:

I think it's cool that they call each other by their surnames. I dislike MSR fanfics
where they're "Oh, Fox" and "Dana, my love". Bleah. i don't why I like it, I just do.

By Nyla on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 1:26 pm:

That is, 'I don't know why I like it' . I made a typo.

By XenaWP on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 6:22 pm:

All in favor of Mulder and Scully getting it on this and next season, raise both of your hands and say whole-hardedly "AYE!!"
Well? I'm WAAAAAITINGGG!!!!

By Fox Mulder on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 8:09 pm:

AYE!!!

By CC on Friday, February 05, 1999 - 8:21 pm:

NAY

By Andrew brown on Sunday, February 07, 1999 - 6:37 pm:

i think they have feelings for each other.

By Nyla on Monday, February 08, 1999 - 9:46 am:

Andrew: Your eyes. Open.

Ummm...nay, but who thinks Mulder might ask her to marry him before saying
that he loves her? Seems like it might happen:
"Scully, you're my partner in life. Shall we make it official?"
"Mulder... DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THOSE THREE LITTLE WORDS?! And
*yes*, I accept."<gives him Scully!Look>
CC, you are a dead man.
I just love saying tha

By The Twelfth Man on Monday, February 08, 1999 - 11:37 am:

Nyla, that dialog could only come from Eddie or Morris, not the real Mulder!

P.S. The ends of your posts are still going away. Please add a few blanks for the NSA Line Eater!

-12-

By Kersh on Monday, February 08, 1999 - 1:19 pm:

Before Mulder and Scully can get married, they may need to go to the Unemployment Office first.

By Chris Ashley on Monday, February 08, 1999 - 8:41 pm:

I dunno...not a giant X-phile meself (have seen all of *one* ep ever), but on general principles it can be difficult when main characters in a show with a small cast get together. Something like Riker/Troi or Tom/B'Elanna can work since the units are only one element in an ensemble cast, but when there are only a few very central characters it might mess up a show's dynamic for the stars to get involved.

Not that I know anything at all; will the shippers of the world please refrain from flaming me. ;-)

By The Twelfth Man on Tuesday, February 09, 1999 - 10:20 am:

Chris,

You are right. Moonlighting is the classic example.

-12-

By Dori-Ann on Tuesday, February 09, 1999 - 2:12 pm:

I think they should wait until the final ep to get together... otherwise, all the sexual tension is lost. But I def wanna see it happen. *s*

By The Twelfth Man on Tuesday, February 09, 1999 - 2:46 pm:

Even that will screw up any future movies...

-12-

By Kellkan on Wednesday, February 10, 1999 - 2:50 pm:

yeah, and what if it's done poorly and they are'nt "natural" during the big scene? that would be a huge let down. DD and GA also might not be cool with it...."(is that Tea Leoni, running toward us with a big knife?)"
I'm personally bummed that scully and the tattoed dude didn't work out...NOW THAT was an interesting chemistry.

By Deuce on Wednesday, February 10, 1999 - 7:22 pm:

Final scene: Mulder and Scully disappear into a bedroom. Scully kicks the door closed. Roll credits.

Also, the opening credo for the final episode should read "THANK YOU". I will not explain this.

By Chris Ashley on Wednesday, February 10, 1999 - 9:11 pm:

Hmm....possibly instead of a bedroom it could be a train cabin...and the train just might enter a tunnel! (By all reports S&M were chased through a cornfield by airplanes in the movie, so why not steal from Hitchcock some more?)

By Deuce on Saturday, February 13, 1999 - 6:57 pm:

Don't say S&M. It makes the immature little boys laugh.

By Nyla on Sunday, February 14, 1999 - 2:09 pm:

Tea Leoni is a shipper, BTW. And yes, my little dialogue was a spoof. (That's
'spoof' not 'spork'. WE LOVE SPORKS!!!) And I pointed out the 'S&M' problem some
time ago, but Chris is excused because he doesn't hang around here much. <g> Oh,
and speaking of Hitchcock, in The X-Files: The Game, 'FEAR THE CORN' is
spraypainted on a warehouse.

By Dori-Ann on Tuesday, February 16, 1999 - 9:43 pm:

In "One Son", Mulder seems to want to take both Fowley and our dear Scully to the "safe" air base thingie... What, exactly, was he thinking? Was he trying to plot out some sorta FBI babe threesome? With Scully and FOWLEY? Is he insane? Dana would have killed Fowley ten minutes into the car trip. And what, exactly, did he think was going to happen once they went to that big spaceship in the sky? They were gonna have a catfight/orgy? With him as the main attraction? And he kissed (or let himself be kissed by) that Fowley woman. Ick. Perhaps he needs to think on his priorities...

By Anonymous on Saturday, March 06, 1999 - 4:31 pm:

Well according to my best friend who was trying to defend Mulder's actions, Fowley kissed him, not the other way around and he didn't seem too enthusastic, and he did kinda ditch Fowley to try to stop the train with Scully. I didn't buy this, but, whatever.

By kellkan on Sunday, March 07, 1999 - 12:13 pm:

has anyone seen the movie "The Rapture"? Am I the only one who understands just why Fowley's kissing Mulder makes the skin crawl so much?
As for Mulder wanting Fowley and Scully, I mean, who would put it past that PORN HOUND to want a threesome, or an anything-in-any-number-some?
Hay- off the subject, but is the X-files computer game any good?

By Lauren on Monday, March 15, 1999 - 8:22 pm:

Hi there! Lots o' fun stuff to post on here!

Re M&S's use of last names only: Imagine this: You're an FBI agent on the scene of a grisly murder, trying to convince a group of doubtful policemen that the murderer was really a [insert monter of the week here]. They're slowly starting to see things from your twisted point of view when your partner hails you from across the site, "Hey Foxy! Come look at this!"....

Re Tea Leoni: I read somewhere that it was her idea for Scully to be naked when Mulder rescued her in the movie. -.^

Re the X-Files Game: It's on a seven---count'em seven---cd-rom set. You've gotta have more patience than I do to get through it. I'm somewhere on disc three and I keep messing up, getting frustrated, and shooting unoffending lamps with my FBI issue handgun. They kick you out of the bureau for that, you know. There are a bunch of cute references and jokes floating around in there though. Thanks for the "FEAR THE CORN" explaination, Nyla. That's been bugging me.

Re M&S's relationship (spoilers if you haven't seen season six): Before the movie and season six, I was a orthodox noromo (non-shipper). For the first five seasons, I figured that M&S's platonic working relationship is what makes them such good partners, and that anything more would've ruined their devotion to finding 'the truth.' But they've been through alot of BS over the past few months, and since neither fried files nor fertilizer investigation could break their spirit, I guess that 'something more' might work out after all.

Besides, wouldn't it be hilarious to see M&S move in together? Which apartment would they keep? Would Mulder's fish object? How would Mulder deal with sleeping on a bed? And perhaps most importantly... would they keep Morris's mirrors? >=)

By reitch calabia on Thursday, March 18, 1999 - 4:21 pm:

Hope you guys don't mind a newbie commenting, but here goes:

Deep down inside I'm a shipper. But really, for Mulder and Scully to get together, the show would have to face a major "Moonlighting Effect." It would totally destroy the show. A friend of mine once commented that the only time and place for Mulder and Scully to get it on would be on a alien ship adrift in space. But that's another story.

If they ever get it on here on earth -- and I think their sex life, given the number of porn movies Mulder has seen, would be absolutely cosmic, but I'm digressing -- I think the characterization in "Arcadia" proves that they wouldn't be able to live with each other, i.e., Scully would learn to feed Mulder's fish but I highly doubt if Mulder would learn to put the toilet seat down.
Please someone... convince me otherwise :)

By J. Goettsche on Thursday, March 18, 1999 - 8:31 pm:

Then again, all the porn Mulder watches could fill his head with unrealistic ideas about sex and about women.

Interesting theory: great at being friends (and more) but terrible at the task of living together. It does sound plausible. (For what it's worth, I have seen ads for a little lamp that lights up the toilet in green if the seat is left up too long.)

By Flint Gideon on Thursday, March 25, 1999 - 2:53 pm:

Re: The name game: I think Mulder told Scully to always call him Mulder and that he even used to make his mother call him that. I don't know why he only calls her Scully.

As for if they should get together, I was sooooo disappointed when they didn't kiss in the movie. My friend and I had a big arguement about it. She is against it, but I am for it. She says it would ruin their working relationship. It might at that. It would be hard for Mulder to send her in to a dangerous situation it he were sleeping with her. Although, I really don't think he could stop her if she has her mind set on it.

By Dori-Ann on Friday, April 30, 1999 - 1:31 am:

Perhaps he calls her Scully because he is male and males have a tendency to call people by their last names. Okay, it's a stretch, but the only other explanation I can think of it that it's pure unadulterated habit.

By Anonymous on Friday, April 30, 1999 - 2:57 pm:

Scully loves Mulder; Mulder loves Scully. (ref. "Triangle" and "Milagro").

By Dori-Ann on Saturday, May 01, 1999 - 4:29 pm:

But will they ever admit it?

By Anonymous on Sunday, May 09, 1999 - 9:54 pm:

And Joanie Loves Chachie. Look, we all know that the two aren perfect for each other, but there ain't a chance in he!! that they will EVER hook up. Carter is simply that sadistic.

By J Gordon on Wednesday, May 12, 1999 - 12:27 pm:

If M and S were ever to start a romantic relationship, they most likely could not work together again. (How would you write that?) And, I agree with those who think that M & S could never live together. Mulder didn't even have a bedroom until season 6. Scully seems to like larger apartments. (However, after seeing "Three of a Kind", I am thinking that Scully may keep the mirrors) ;-) All in all, I am a newbie who is only for friendship.

By ??? of Nine on Thursday, June 28, 2001 - 4:03 pm:

M&S = Marks & Spencer's?!
