Continuity took a hit at the slots. When Frohike tries his luck at the big machine, just before Byers spots The Woman, we see the slot machine coming up with a red Bar on its first drum. When Byers starts going after her, though, it's changed to a blank.

With all the fake blood The Woman shed in the fake shooting, why did none of it soak through to the undershirt she was wearing? (And yes, I've completely forgotten her name. Sorry.)

By Richie Vest on Sunday, May 02, 1999 - 11:13 pm:

No nits from me but two comments:

1. I liked seeing Michael McKean again.
2. Gee David Duchovny really phoned it in this week.

By The Twelfth Man on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 1:19 am:

I liked the Morris shot. It makes sense for him to be there. Did you see the look he gave as Scully left? Did he remember her, or (because of the big reset switch) did he just have a serious case of Deja Vu?

-12-

By Murray Leeder on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 7:48 am:

Not bad! It's interesting to deal with the conspiracy's lowest levels for a change. I almost wish, however, that it dealt with the fact that perfectly ordinary and good people can become involved in the conspiracy, thinking it's doing right.

So do they really have secret high-tech conventions of evil around the country with some regularity?

They shouldn't have billed Michael McKean.

By Murray Leeder on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 7:53 am:

I don't know if it's necessarily a nit, but when Langly found Scully unconscious he sure didn't seem very... paranoid!

By Ben Jackson (Bjackson) on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 9:55 am:

Good episode! I loved every minute of it. I liked the continueation of the other episode with the lady (can't remember her name or what the episode was). Duchovney didn't appear once in this episode, I noticed (unless you consider his voice in the phone call an appearance). Anyway, great episode!

By Hans Thielman on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 11:30 am:

I am not certain Morris would have necessarily recognized Scully from their encounter at Area 51, since that meeting occurred several months before and at night.

What would the Lone Gunmen have done if Scully had checked with Assistant Director Skinner first before heading off to Las Vegas (or go to Mulder's apartment)? Is Skinner going to approve her travel expenses?

By Murray Leeder on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 12:00 pm:

The AE-35 unit mentioned (or was it AE-135?) is a direct homage to 2001.

By Derek Baker on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 1:03 pm:

Major continuity error: In the final shot, Langley has long hair again. How did this slip by the editors?

By MikeC on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 1:21 pm:

Good episode--the Lone Gunmen could make a very good television show, as they have a thrilling premise, and very fine actors (I am constantly pleased by Bruce Harwood as Byers).

The revelation that one of Gunmen's friends turns out to be a government spy was interesting. This could even lead us to theorize that one of the Gunmen has been playing them all along, and is a spy in his own right.

While I despised "Dreamland", I did enjoy seeing Michael McKean again (but was he playing Morris Fletcher?), and perhaps he could just stalk his way through little goofy cameoes like this. (maybe harass Frank Black?).

Scully's part was really unecessary, but it was a way to get some cheap laughs, and a way to not alienate the "Moose and Squirrel" purists.

Also, a nit. How could Timmy be so sure that Langly would not act all goofy and insane after he injected him with the mind-control drug?

This did leave me wondering in the climax if Susanne would die, or who the intended target was in the briefing room--I thought it would turn out to be Grant.

By Donna Littleford on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 2:03 pm:

Response to Derek Baker and Langley's hair:
It isn't cut. He just has it tied up in back. Later Frohickey comments that he wishes they could use the AH to get Langley to cut his hair.

Mulder's absence must mean Duchovny's doing another movie.

And I liked Scully getting to "return" the swat to Morris.

By D. Stuart on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 4:35 pm:

My "nit-picks" are as proceeds:
1) Would you not be a tad suspicious as to how a programmed assassin (Ringo Langly) scampers nonchalantly away after shooting someone and is not detained by a federal agent (Special Agent Dana Scully) who is entering in the same direction to which the programmed assassin (Ringo Langly) is headed?
2) The paramedics, who consisted of Melvin Frohike--whose face was in plain sight and conveniently not recognized, might I add--and John F. Byers, arrived suspiciously quick, and it is a wonder Mr. Grant or anyone else had not noticed.

By D. Stuart on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 5:05 pm:

...are as [numerically] proceeds. I attempt to maintain a pattern.

By Dan R. on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 5:12 pm:

Mulder's absence must mean Duchovny's doing another movie.

Or they might have been saving this episode's script and shot it while David was with his wife when she had her baby...at least that's my mom's theory...
DID his wife have the baby during the filming of this episode? Just curious.

By Richie Vest on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 7:33 pm:

No I think They (David and Tea) only had it a couple of weeks ago, so I doubt it. Maybe they gave him the time off because he directed and written an episode of the series.

By Felinecare on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 10:26 pm:

Scully telling the security guard *He got away* when Langley had barely left the room. Wouldn't the gung-ho guard give chase anyway?

By ScottN on Monday, May 03, 1999 - 11:42 pm:

Hans, Morris invited Scully over to Mulder's place... Remember the waterbed and the mirror on the ceiling?

By Aaron on Tuesday, May 04, 1999 - 5:37 am:

Well, everything was reset at the end of that two-parter, right? Remember Mulder and Scully's looks of confusion at certain remnants from the alternate timeline?

By Murray Leeder on Tuesday, May 04, 1999 - 7:41 am:

Obviously the security guard was in on the assassination plot!

By The Twelfth Man on Tuesday, May 04, 1999 - 10:11 am:

Hans, ScottN was probably referring to my question about the strange look Morris gave Scully... Was it Deja Vu, or did he really remember her?

By Charles Cabe (Ccabe) on Tuesday, May 04, 1999 - 12:38 pm:

Including Morris was a great little detail. Not truly relvent to the plot, but fun none the less. It must have cost a lot to get the actor to return. I was wondering when he'd show up because I saw the actor's name in the credits. Kudos to the producers.

By S. Donaldson on Thursday, May 06, 1999 - 5:43 am:

Even if Morris doesn't remember switching places with Mulder he undoubtedly knows all about those two in the basement.

By Derek Baker on Thursday, May 06, 1999 - 2:05 pm:

About the Hair:
Are You sure? I didn't tape it, so I can't go back to check, but I thought in the ballroom he actually had it cropped close (the better to get into the meeting) and not just pulled back. As I said, I could have been mistaken. Let me know, if someone did tape it.

By Anonymous on Thursday, May 06, 1999 - 8:45 pm:

For D Baker:
I taped the episode, and yes, Langley had his hair pulled back into a tight ponytail close to his neck.

By Mike Konczewski on Friday, May 07, 1999 - 1:06 pm:

Mulder's abscence was due to DD being involved in directing the previous episode, "The Unnatural."

By J. Gordon on Monday, May 10, 1999 - 10:48 pm:

Personally, I loved Scully swatting Morris! PAYBACK!

By D. Stuart on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 - 9:27 pm:

I recently noticed a resemblance between John Fitzgerald Byers and Pres. John Fitzgerald Kennedy. For starters, their first two names (i.e., John Fitzgerald) are the same. And secondly, the coiffure (def.: hairstyle) is primped identically.

By Chris Thomas on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 - 8:07 am:

D. Stuart - the fact Byers and Kennedy have the same first two names is pointed out in the episode's teaser... Byers was named after Kennedy, he says.

By TWS Garrison on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 1:37 am:

So, why didn't Suzanne go public? She was planning to do so, and said that she had evidence. Nothing in this episode suggested that her evidence was destroyed.

The bugging of Suzanne's room seemed awfully cheap. "They" can develop a mind-control agent and (apparently) contain at least one person unwillingly for ten years, but "they" can't do better than a camcorder in a duct to watch someone who's already tried to run?

You mean, more goofy than usual?

So, why didn't Suzanne go public? She was planning to do so, and said that she had evidence. Nothing in this episode suggested that her evidence was destroyed.

Because then the conspiracy would hunt her down and kill her to silence her. If she keeps a low profile and is no threat, she might escape.

The bugging of Suzanne's room seemed awfully cheap. "They" can develop a mind-control agent and (apparently) contain at least one person unwillingly for ten years, but "they" can't do better than a camcorder in a duct to watch someone who's already tried to run?

But she was convinced that Grant was on her side, thus she no longer had a reason to run. What's wrong with the camera in the duct? Yes, we don't really know why it's there, but my guess is that they want to make sure Grant didn't get an attack of conscience, but is still playing double agent. So not spying on her, but on him, and not to get anything incriminating, but as a threat/reminder to Grant that he's being watched all the time, there's no getting away from them, if he doesn't go along, he'll be killed like the others who didn't cooperate.
