Chinga

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: XFiles: Season Five: Chinga
Synopsis: Scully, on vacation in Maine, stops at a grocery store where all customers are scratching their faces bloody. Upon examining the store video, she notices that someone is unaffected - Melissa Turner and her daughter Polly, who is carrying a doll. Polly has a Svengali-like hold on Melissa. Whenever Polly is displeased, the talking doll opens her eyes, says "I WANT TO PLAY", and forces her victims to inflicting lethal wounds on themselves (to the strains of "Hokey Pokey"). In addition, Melissa usually has a vision of the doll’s victim-to-be. Despite nailing her windows shut (so that the doll cannot leave the house), people end up dead.

Ultimately, Melissa sees herself, with a bloody hammer in her head in one of her visions. Terrified, she prepares to burn her house as Scully and the police captain show up. However, the doll has other plans and forces Melissa to hammer herself in the head. Fortunately, Scully grabs the doll and microwaves it, in time to save Melissa. Scully goes back to work. A lobster fisherman opens his cage to reveal ...the burned-up doll, who opens her eyes and declares, “I WANT TO PLAY”. The episode closes to the strains of the “Hokey Pokey”.

According to the plot synopsis, the episode title stands for the doll's name. But in the both times I have seen this episode, Polly, the little girl, does not call her doll's name.

Why is the doll in the lake an the end of the episode? Shouldent it have been totally incinerated or out in an evidence locker?

By Murray Leeder on Sunday, November 01, 1998 - 10:35 pm:

At the time, I figured it used its mystical-weirdo powers to re-manifest itself in the water (isn't it the ocean?). Now I'm not so sure.

I thought that Scully must have just thrown in the lake, which seemed really dumb.

By Murray Leeder on Sunday, November 29, 1998 - 11:57 am:

Can the doll transport itself back where it came from yet not give itself a new paint job? Well, as Phil remarked once, evil rarely makes sense.

At the beginning of the ep, when Scully is at the gas station, the price of gas can be seen briefly on the station sign. As I recall, the number is 0.43 - pretty cheap for a gallon of gas in Maine, but about right for a liter of gas in Vancouver BC!

Why couldn't there be two dolls?

By J. Goettsche on Friday, February 26, 1999 - 10:37 am:

It is possible that there is a second Eeevil (TM) doll out there. It seems unlikely that the second Eeevil doll would materialize all burned up.

So if frying the doll or otherwise destroying it ends the 'curse' then why doesent Melissa do this when her daughter is sleeping? It's not like she didn't know the doll was responsible! Also when the doll is making her hit herself with a hammer why doesent someone try to grab it from her?

Why did the doll have the cop kill himself by beating himself to death with his baton? Why not have him simply shoot himself?

A litre of gass if only 43 cents in BC! Wow thats cheap! The cheapest I've seen it here is 47 cents.

They missed a great opportunity for a great line. As Scully takes the doll away from Polly the doll keeps repeating the line "I want to play." As Scully puts the doll into the microwave she could have said "Here play with the this."

Why doesn't the doll have the cop shoot himself? Because that's not as sadistic. Pure evil and all that jazz.

Man, looking back at my message from a little over 11 years ago shows how much times have changed. 47 cents a litre for gas! Now it's more like $1.10!
