After seeing this in early January, it has become one of my favorite films. The dubbing is excellent, although Claire Danes is a bit much at times. However, I wish that the ending could have been a little longer. Will Lady Eboshi actually build a "better" Irontown? And how does she define "better?" Anyway, I can't really think of many nits, but can anyone else?
Incidentally, if you'd like to understand Danes' casting, just remember that san also means "acid" in Japanese.
This has to be one of the best anime movies that has come to the states. The dubbing is excellent, as is the animation and story. There is nothing much like a movie with a good plot. None of the characters can be considered completely good guys or bad guys.

I just noticed a nit. When Ashitaka is leaving Iron Town, the captain of the guards calls for a flint. The Rifles appear to use burning ropes instead of a flint to fire the gun
The rifles are Matchlocks, not Flintlocks, you need a Flint to light the "Match" i.e the rope to set the powder off.
Flintlocks use a flint directly to fire the gunpowder, & came later (the improved prototype handled by Lady Eboshi ?).
Given that (the land's) based on Japan, than I could argue, that a Shogun halted Lady Ebioshi's plan to build Irontown II (The Tokugawa Shoganate banned firearms delevopment for 200 years, based on protests from the Samurai) or alternately, she could not get enough access to iron ore or charcoal to forge more iron. (This is the reason in the film, why the forests around Irontown are being cut down, which starts the events of the film !)
I can't help but wonder where some of these Japanese people picked up their New York, Texan, and British accents.
By the way, I've always been a little fuzzy on just what happens to Ashitaka. Was the mark still on his hand and the end, or was that just a scar?
I don't think anything was left on Ashitaka's hand - the mark was removed, though a scar might still be there.
OK, so I guess it WAS it WAS a scar then. (there's a faint purple smudge on his palm)
Wow, a really awesome movie. The animation, and the loving detail to the drawings (at some scenes, the nature looked as if it'd been filmed for real instead of drawn), the intelligent story, strong female characters...
Even though I don't know anything about the japanese myths the story is based on or that referred to, the main points are universal. And it's good to have a nice ending, for once, too.
The only thing I'd like to know is whether they translated the dubbed version from the original japanese, or from the adapted english version. (since it'd probably be easiert to find english instead of japanese translators.)
From the context of several comments that the inhabitants of Irontown make it appears that they are so out in the middle of nowhere that they don't even know WHAT an Emperor is,let alone WHO
the current one may be.From this it might be considered that the Shogun's or Emperor's men haven't really bothered to come as far as Irontown.
It also seems that Ashitaka's tribe have been successful in the past 500 years in hiding out from the Authorities after it was supposedly shattered and destroyed.
These two facts may in fact indicate that the Central Government of Japan,wheter under the Shogun or Emperor has yet to reach that far into the hinterland.
It should also be mentioned that the Emperor heard that the head of the Forest Guardian/Night Walker could be used to make him immortal as a RUMOR,which is why he sent his hunters out.
As far as Lady Eboshi goes,she is such a strong and independent woman that I doubt very much that she would allow anyone to tell her how to run Irontown no matter who sent them.
This attitude is shown by the way the former prostitutes imitate her defiance when they are being threatened.
