As Good As It Gets

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Miscellaneous Comedy: As Good As It Gets
A mean-spirited obsessive/compulsive writer, Melvin, falls in love with his waitress, Carol, who can't stand him. Meanwhile, Melvin is forced into taking care of his neighbor, Simon's dog. Melvin can't stand Simon: He's gay and an artist. He still can't stand him when he is roped with Carol into taking a trip to Simon's mother's house. Before they get there, Simon and Carol start to show some attraction to each other, leaving Melvin devastated. Simon encourages Melvin that if he really loves Carol, he should show it, and Melvin runs off to win Carol's heart, which also is a good cure for his obsessive nature.

STARRING

The only problem I had with this film was Helen Hunt cussing, but then again I'm still kinda use to seeing her on Mad About You, so...

This was a wonderful picture but its biggest problem was the timeframe. Melvin's initial transformation (the dog-induced one) happened far too quickly.

At times, I think, the movie says that Melvin is so mean-spirited and foul-mouthed partly because of his obsessive/compulsive behavior. According to a few people, this would have nothing to do with his foul mouth. If that's so, I can't really member the reasons why Melvin is so mean and lonely. Possibly because no one likes him for his obsessiveness?

I liked him better at the beginning

How about this for a nit. Would any woman walk in the rain with basicly a tee-shirt on and then only realize hours later that the shirt becuase of the rain is now see through

You're complaining?

By Derek T on Friday, March 17, 2000 - 2:04 pm:

I'm not complaining, just saying its a nit

I disagree - if she was that motivated to walk through the rain she probably didn't care what was happening. Her sole focus was to reach her goal and it wasn't until she stopped walking in the rain she realised just how wet she was.

Leelee Sobieski ("Deep Impact", the miniseries "Joan of Arc") looks like she could be Helen Hunt's younger sister.
My wife is taking anti-depressants, but not for OCD, so I am unfamiliar with this plight. However, I thought the Nicholson's character's overuse of soap to wash his hands (and Neutrogena yet, not a cheap brand) was extremely wasteful.

Adam: That's not uncommon though for sufferers of OCD. I know of OCD victims who scrub their hands bloody after touching something that might have had dirt on it.
