What was the thing with Frost and Uma Thruman, I never was able to figure out that one. By the way I thought this movie was worse than Star Trek 5

Lame, Lame, Lame. Could they not hire better writters. The costumes were excellent, the actors were excellent, the settings were excellent. The plot line sucked, the writting was even worse. What happened here?????
Go figure.

It showed a great deal of potential, paying homage (such as it is) to the total campiness of the original TV series...which is why I can't pick nits with it: camp defies being picked at.

It's not often that I like a remake's actor in a role better than the original (let's face it, Angelica Huston cannot even BEGIN to compare to original Morticia Adams - what was her name?) but I like the attitude Uma Thurman brought to the character of Mrs. Peel much better. Yes, I loved Diana Rigg as Mrs. Peel, too, but Uma's portrayal put an edginess on the character that was <tres chic>! Ralph/Rafe Fiennes could have taken a lesson or two from her!

By Mike Konczewski on Monday, March 01, 1999 - 10:28 am:

The original Morticia was played by Carolyn Jones.

This film was a mess.

By Amos on Saturday, April 24, 1999 - 6:17 pm:

Rented it last night.

AND

Suffered through it!

Yuk! It was horrable. I've never seen the original show, I would imagine it was a lot better.

My main problem was that the characters never shut up. Consantly spouting off "witty" comments to each other.

I still think Uma Thurman is hot.

One I liked about this movie besides Uma, Evil People dressed in TeddyBear Suits. It was kind of funny at first, then it turned wierd, then silly.

Poor Sean Connery, I wonder why he even took his role.

ANP

I understand that the REAL John Steed was delighted that the film did poorly. I don't blame him.

The REAL Emma Peel, no matter what she was wearing, always radiated class right down to her toes. Uma Thurman looks like a...well, I won't go into that.

The one good thing the movie did was get people interested in the original Avengers series. Video purchases and rentals are going very well.

By D. Stuart on Wednesday, December 29, 1999 - 8:19 am:

My nitpicks are as numerically proceeds:
1) Why are these individuals not killed? For example, there were numerous opportunities during which the villains could have eliminated John Steed, Alice, and "Mother." In fact, they were all subdued. Be that as it may, they were never slain. Villains will never learn.
2) Emma Peel survived her plunge from the hot air balloon to the snow-covered ground? Snow would cushion the landing, but not to the extent they presented.
3) Why did Emma Peel change into her sinister double's attire prior to her and John Steed's infiltration of Sir August de Wynter's headquarters? It hardly seems logical.
4) Perhaps Sir August de Wynter changed his mind regarding keeping Emma Peel alive, considering he made all attempts to have both she and John Steed slain.
5) John Steed's arm would be dislocated if he had in fact plummeted from the one catwalk to the one below during his final conflict with Sir August de Wynter.
6) Why was Sir August de Wynter hurled upward by the lightning bolt? In actuality, he would have become a smoldering pile of human flesh and organs, particularly with the amount of electricity encompassing his body.

Are those people completely insane? Emma's double does something bad, and she ought to prove it's not been her. Okay, I can just accept that. But then Steed and his organisation take her right to their headquarters! Remember that if they thought she was innocent, there'd be not need to prove it, so they aren't. Why show your secret headquarters to a potential psycho? Please tell me.

Two credit nitpicks - One credit reads something like "Inspired by the TV series The Avengers," omitting the name of series creator Sydney Newman. Also, the TV series theme is played at the end, but no credit is given to composer Laurie Johnson. Shouldn't there have been credit given, possibly in order to give royalty payments to Mr. Johnson and the estate of Mr. Newman (he died in 1997)? Or, is Warner Bros. above something like that?
I remember the original posters showing a "PG" rating. But, this movie was released with a "PG-13", probably due to the inclusion of one obscenity. Which sounded like it was added after the fact.
This film is a confused mess, probably due to the fact that, like Superman IV, it was heavily edited (in this case, from 115 to 89 minutes) after mostly negative early buzz. Yet, when it's on TV, I always find myself tuning in.

This movie was on Encore the other night. I stand corrected - Laurie Johnson does receive credit as the composer of the series' theme. In fact, his credit is in the opening credit roll, right after film composer Joel McNeely's. Why does Mr. Johnson rate having his credit at the begining of the film, when Alexander Courage's credit as the composer of the Star Trek theme is in the end credit roll of ST-TMP? The Avengers theme is used twice in the film, while Courage's theme is heard three times in TMP, BTW.

The Agony Booth has posted a video review of this film, comparing it with the TV series. It can be viewed here. (The video doesn't explain what was up with the scene of people in teddy bear costumes, sitting around a conference table. Can anything? )
