So, for starters, why on earth wasn't the blond
lady (sorry, can't think of her name) killed when
she was in the very front as the humungus ship
crashed, we know that her protective window had
broken. Second, after a certian point nobody seems
to be bothered by the thin oxygen, despite the
fact that they run all over the place. Finally,
dosen't that seem to be a REALLY unstable
ecosystem? On the whole, I enjoyed this movie
though.

By JC on Saturday, February 26, 2000 - 12:08 pm:

Sorry I didn't feel the same way about it. It was just marginally better than the abyssmal Supernova.

A couple of things, though...

Towards the end, they hide in a cave from the creatures. Their torches go out. And then they discover those glowing leeches. How convenient for them!

Anyhow, the lead woman goes to the ship alone so that she can get more light for the others. But at the end when she returns for them, she comes back with the same bottle of glowing leeches she left with. Why didn't they just go with her in the first place?

Also, it didn't look to me like the creatures could see where it was light and where it was dark. The effect used for their vision was identical each time. So how did they know it was safe to come out of the hole?

By Mike Ram on Saturday, March 04, 2000 - 10:36 pm:

Seems to me that the killer dude shouldn't have seen the controls at the end since he can only see bright light patterns. He should have just seen a blur or vlinging lights.

But overall, a pretty good movie.

By Mike Ram on Saturday, March 04, 2000 - 10:36 pm:

blinding lights, sorry...

By notv on Monday, March 06, 2000 - 1:57 pm:

Yeah, in the first part they made a big deal about
showning him taking off and putting on the
glasses, but eventually is seems to become awfully
random, there may even be a few times when he puts
them on in the dark, which is really
self-defeating.

By ron on Friday, May 12, 2000 - 7:52 am:

the best scene- was the saturn-like planet eclipsing the suns. that was cool. they all seem entranced by it even though they knew they had to hurry to get back to the settlement.

how convient that raditz had cat eyes and could see in the dark. the planet didn't seem to have live on it anymore, so how did the night creatures survive? but i guess that's why they started attacking each other.

This movie was a waste of my $4.50.
This movie was also credited as being the scareiest Sci-Fi movie ever. Ho hum. Show me where it was scary, and I'll show you someone who get scared really easy.

By Mike Ram on Sunday, May 14, 2000 - 10:17 pm:

Meg: You're entitled to your opinions, but I thought this movie was pretty good. No, I didn't think it was scary, but it did have some things in it that were unique (Like the main character dying in the end instead of being saved.). And $4.50 is pretty good for a movie (And don't you know how to sneak into other movies? JK ~_-).

By notv on Monday, May 15, 2000 - 6:02 pm:

I am under no illusions that it was the cinematic
event of the century, but I have put 4.50 to worse
causes. What really impressed me was the
cinematography (spelling?) in the beginning when
they crash land. The bleached, sunbaked look and
the cat-and-mouse with Ritig in the bones struck
me as down right artistic, in a movie not
otherwise much marked by innovative ideas or
themes.

Of course, the real reason that I went and saw
the movie was that Claudia Black was in it and I'm
a Farscape fan (she played Shazz, the one who is
eaten by the swarm of little guys). She didn't
live very long, but such is life. I gave the movie
bonus points though for providing employment,
however briefly, for one of my favorite actresses

By Meg on Monday, May 22, 2000 - 5:54 pm:

Mike I mean no disrepect. I just thought the movie was a tad boring. The plot seemed choppy as if they cut some of the plot out. It did have good cinematogrophy (sp). Mike, I have also seen a movie where the main character dies in a sci-fi/horror. Have you ever seen Event Horizon?
(now that I told you part of the end it would probably screw up the ending for you if you haven't) That movie was very chilling. I was hoping for another frightening movie with this, but alas, it did not work.

Oh, and about the $4.50. I saw a matinee on saturday. It's cheaper than a night show of $7.00.

This movie ROCKED. Loved it. All the character stuff going on was great, and my friend Eddie and I saw a huge star in Vin Diesel when we first saw this film, long before The Fast and the Furious, which in my view, had him play a chump.

Speculation on Riddicks shades; Perhaps they're not just plain auld shades like we're thinking, but some kinda filters to work specifically with his implants i.e. when he wears them, his vision is next to normal without nightsight. Just a thought........

Is it just me, or did the raptors seem to get bigger after it got dark? When the attack Shazza and the first son, they don't seem that large, like the size of birds or bats swarming the individuals that they kill. Yet later, it only takes one to kill their victims, and they are shown to be much larger such as when one decides to take a chomp out of the mercenary's head.

By R on Wednesday, February 04, 2004 - 10:03 am:

I always thought that the litle bats where the bottom of the food chain and able to move around in the shadowy area of the building that the next size up raptors couldnt because it was too bright. But when it became dark the bigger baddies where able tocome out.

I was surprised there was ANY life at all on this planet, unless these things procreate all the time therefore their offspring has a chance at eating whatever comes onto the planet..

And I kinda thought those "glow worms" in the cave might have been young larvae from one of the life forms flying around. just a guess, might also explain why the creatures didn't just attack in mass and kill them all. they (assuming they have compassion for their own) might not have thought they could kill the humans w/o risk to the offspring.

just my thought on it. Looking foreward to Chronicals Of Riddick, the previews look cool.

By Influx on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 7:04 am:

Nice showing on the Sci-Fi channel -- letterboxed yes! I'd been thinking about renting this one due to the new Riddick movie coming out. Obviously some language and scenes had to be cut, but overall I liked it.

The only nit that concerned me was that the pilot should have at least been cut by the flying glass of the windshield. Even if it's safety glass, it being blown into your face at that speed is bound to cause some damage.

I think the fuel cells should have looked a lot heavier (or are they the same ones Degra uses -- you know, the kind that Trip can send flinging down a hallway with a single light kick?)

There was one point where I actually thought Riddick {would} take off and leave the others behind.

I considered the larvae-babies thing too. But it may have seemed too close to the scene in Alien 3 where mama doesn't attack Ripley because she is "with alien".

No real big surprises here, kind of ten-little-indians plot, but enjoyable nonetheless. But scary, suspenseful? Not really.

I find it hard to believe that all three suns could be eclipsed at the same time. As one sun rose when the other two set.

Does this make sense?

It does. We are shown a model of the system built by the scientists who were there before, and it does show how the total eclipse periodically happens.

One thing they did that was really stupid was to rush to recover the fuel cells when the eclipse begins. It was obvious that they never could go to the ship, take the cells and get back to camp before night was complete. It was just as obvious that the vehicule they were using would stop working at that moment because it drew power directly from the suns and had no battery. What they should have done instead was connect the one fuel cell they had, use its power to flood the camp with as much light as they could and then hunker down and wait for the eclipse to end.

Kind of dumb for the colonists to construct a vehicle that would be totally useless at night.

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 - 5:46 am:

This movie was shot in Australia. Vin Diesel (Riddick), Cole Hauser (Johns), and Keith David (Aman) were the only Americans in the cast. The rest were Australian.

The reason I point this out is that, throughout the film, Radha Mitchell's (Fry) Australian accent keeps slipping out. Why didn't they just make her character Australian?
