Space Cowboys

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Miscellaneous Drama: Space Cowboys

I saw this move Sunday, and I have to say it was awesome. Even better than I expected, and I expected a pretty damm fine movie. All the actors turned in great perfomances. Not just the leads (who were great), but also the supporting characters, played by Marcia Gay harden, Courtney B. Vance, James Cromwell, and William Devane. There were some minor flaws with the movie of course, but most are forgivable.

And how about that ending huh?

By Slinky Frog on Wednesday, August 16, 2000 - 8:02 pm:

I thought this movie was pretty good too. Though, I wasn't surprized what happen to Hawk's character. Even then, that was beautifully done, in my book.
Question, the dark haired lady working there at NASA. She reminds me of the female alien of Galaxy Quest. Is it the same actress?

By Dr Fidelius on Friday, August 18, 2000 - 8:22 pm:

Missi Pyle was in _Galaxy Quest_.

Marcia Gay Harden was in _Space Cowboys_.

Ms Harden seems to be at least ten inches shorter than Ms Pyle. I think it is the nerdess hairstyle that makes them look similar to you.

BTW, who ever heard of a Baptist minister saying a "Hail Mary"?

This works up until they go into space.

Excellent performances from all involved, however. Clint Eastwood seemed to be making this movie as a deliberate slap to those that think that you need young faces to have a successful movie. Sort of "The Golden Girls" but MACHO!

A query: Isn't Tommy Lee Jones actually a lot younger than the other three guys?

I liked William Devane's character, but the early scenes left me wondering "WHO is this guy?" I first thought he was a member of the press corps, then a NASA publicist, and then it was revealed that he was a director of operations.

I wanted James Woods to come in and reprise his character from "Contact."

Tommy Lee Jones was born in '46, as opposed to Eastwood (1930), Sutherland (1935), and Garner (1928). Which makes the assumption that he was on Team Daedalus with them and they were all about twenty slightly impossible. But hey, without him, the movie wouldn't have been half as good. He's just a great actor! (He also was great in "The Fugitive".) And the scene where they take the eyesight test is wonderful, I couldn't stop laughing.

When is the DVD coming out? Can't wait. Eastwood's best in years. Finally-a movie for us over 40's. Most of the audience I saw it with were older than I am. (46)

This wonderful film proves that Clint is still light years ahead(no pun intended) of the many action stars he inspired.
I've heard that this may be his last film. I certainly hope it isn't, but, if it is, it'll be the perfect last film.

By Adam Bomb on Saturday, March 24, 2001 - 5:28 pm:

I don't think this will be Clint's last film. He has signed on to direct another pic, title escapes me now.
I think Marcia Gay Harden had just about the same haircut in "Pollock". I recommend her performance in a little pic called "The Spitfire Grill." She plays a mousy woman who learns to stand up to her controlling husband (Will Patton)

"Space Cowboys" is now available on DVD. I sense a pattern in video releases: DVD first, weeks or months before a VHS release.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they retire the MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit?) many years ago because it was too dangerous?

By Merat on Sunday, September 30, 2001 - 3:34 pm:

I'm very sorry, I did not see the message about not posting here until it was too late. I beg forgiveness.

By Craig Rohloff on Friday, November 08, 2002 - 3:23 pm:

Um... what message is that? (With advanced apologies if it's still in effect, because I don't see it at all.)

Anyway, I believe the MMU is retired, but hey, if they can bring back retired astronauts, they can bring back retired technology, too!

Spookiness...

On re-entry, they're worried about breaking up 38 miles over Texas. And it looks like the stress is in the left wing.

Agreed about the eye test. Great scene.

Nit on the landing. When they get ready to bail out (the two non-Daedalus astronauts), Jerry blows the hatch. None of Jerry, Tank, or Frank has their helmets closed. Also, I know the escape system is designed to work at speed, but anyone know if it would really work at 500 knots? At least they were subsonic. Supersonic would have strained the limits of credulity.
