A 1987 romantic comedy, set in Brooklyn, but filmed for the most part in Toronto. Cher plays Loretta, a 37 year old widow engaged to one man, who falls in love with his brother. A very amusing flick, but the last scene irritates me. Loretta's fiancee, Johnny (Danny Aiello) returns from Italy, where his mother was on her deathbed but miraculously recovers, allegedly from the fact that he is to be married. He tells Loretta that now he can't marry her. Loretta says to Johnny when confronted with this, "I need my family around." The fact that a 37 year old woman has no independence and needs her family around for every single little thing grates me no end. (probably because I live this kind of stuff.) If anyone wants to comment or flame me about this, feel free to e-mail me at abomb@nitcentral.com. Just don't flame me here; keep this board just about comments re:the movie.

When Loretta's mom Rose (Olympia Dukakis) is dining with John Mahoney's Perry, his sportcoat appears to be bone dry, despite his having had water thrown on him by his date not five minutes before, and the sportcoat acquiring a large water stain as a result.
Olympia Dukakis won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in this picture. Deservedly, as she got the best lines, and she delivers them perfectly. Here's a very funny example:

Rose: Do you love him, Loretta?
Loretta: Aw, ma, I love him awful.
Rose: Oh, God, that's too bad.
