Léon/The Professional

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Action/Adventure: Léon/The Professional

I'd always thought 'The Professional' was a very different type of action film, and well done at that. With the recent release of 'Leon,' I see that 'The Professional' didn't tell the whole story. Any reactions to either (or both) films?
SPOILER WARNING!!! Any discussion of these films will inevitably ruin several surprise elements...in fact, just reading the plot summary on the movie's video/dvd box will ruin them. If you want to be surprised by the movies, please watch them before proceeding here! (When I first saw 'The Professional,' I had no idea what it was about, other than it dealt with a hit man...I'm glad I didn't read the video box, or little in the film would have surprised me.)

Since I asked for this board, I guess I could post to it once in a while.

Big nit: Wouldn't the police, FBI, social services or SOME agency be looking for Mathilda after her entire family was murdered? If the bad guys realized there was an extra kid missing while they were searching the apartment (based on seeing her photograph amid a collection of family photos), surely the authorities would pick up on the fact that she was missing.
Even if Stansfield fed the authorities some b.s. about her to throw off the trail (like he did about the shooting incident itself), I would think the deception wouldn't last long.
Of course, it would have been a much shorter and less interesting film had she been found and taken into protective custody. And to be honest, I didn't even think of this one myself while watching the film.
