Run Lola Run

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Drama: Run Lola Run
By Mike Ram on Thursday, March 28, 2002 - 10:22 pm:

-In the first run, Lola doesn't know what a gun safety is, but in the second run, she does.

-Twice in run 2, Lola's bra strap slips off and then is back up in the next shot. First, when she runs out of her apartment gates, then when she is entering the door to her father's office.

-In the second run, the bank scenes take WAY longer than in the other runs (especially due to the SLOW teller), yet everything afterwards seems to be either the same, or, in the "watch lady" case, slower!

-Who is the blind lady who points out the bum to Manni?

My guess is that she reprents fate (who could be a blind old women; in many myths/ religions fate is an/ some old women) or, if you like, mannis personal guardian angel.

I really liked this film! And that some americans watched it, too! Wow! I'm interested in how berlin looked to americans, who are used to american cities, and if you noticed any differences of behaviour for the german actors. (a discussion about this started some time ago on one of the stargate boards).

I was fascinated with the scenery and the roads in the movie. It made me want to go to Europe. I've lived in the States all my life and never had the chance to visit other countries. I don't see many mopeds around here in Atlanta. Seems like in America she could have found a quicker or easier way to get to Manni than running, be it a cab or a neighbor's car or a bike. But the running made it a better movie, made her seem more determined and desperate. If the whole movie was her in the back of a cab... who would care?
Oh and the casino that just happens to be there across the street. There are definitely not enough casinos in America where there could just coincidentally be one right there in front of her. I think gambling is illegal in most states, and certainly here in Georgia. Except the Georgia Lotto!
We don't see groups of nuns walking down the street, at least I don't. Who knows about inner cities with lots of Catholic churches? Were the nuns a normal sight in Berlin?
Oh and I've never seen a bank like that one. With an elevator and whatnot.

The casino in the inner city is a specialty of Berlin, I think. (There are state owned casinos in each country, and a gambling commission who oversees them and gives licenses. Since they surplus goes to the state, they are allowed. Many resorts have casinos which are over a hundred years old, because when the rich people went bathing, they also gambled. The small-time casinos, that is, one-armed bandits, are without commission and usually around the central station or in the nightclub part of a big city).

The nuns - well, there are monasteries in use in inner cities, although I don't know how often nuns are put into movies/ads simply for the comic value.

I think that Lola didn't take a cab because cabs can be slower in inner city traffic congestion, also because she was thinking while she was running on what to do. Besides, the chain of events wouldn't have worked (every time, she was a few seconds later or earlier at a specific place, interacting with other people in this place, most markedly the businessman with which her father had the appointment (herr schneider?). the first two times she ran into his car, so he was delayed; the third time, she was slower, and the appointment was on time, so she missed her father altogether.)

Don't France and Germany have a greater percent of Cathlics in their poopulation than the USA? I know that in France Cathlic curuchs are about as common as Baptist ones are here in Georgia. BTW this also goes a bit further to explinaning the nuns.

Brian,

if you are talking about the percentage of catholics rather than the number, this is true for some regions of germany (bavaria, rhineland), but I don't think that berlin is one of them. I know that many hugenottes went from france to prussia during Friedrich the Great's time, and Berlin has a reputation of being liberal and tolerant, which I would associate more with protestants.

However, once you have one monastery at least which is still being used by an order, you can have nuns.

They could also be "Englische Fräulein" (English misses? The order founded by an english miss), who went to a lot of countries to found schools for girls. There are some schools still being serviced by them.

I guess some catholic would have to identify from the habit they wear which order they belong to, and then we need somebody who knows his way about berlin to verify if a monastery of this order is around. (I haven't been to Berlin yet.)
