The Scorpion King

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Science Fiction/Fantasy: The Scorpion King

I went to see this today with a friend and have to say this. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It had all of the standard formula ingredients: A muscular hero, a beautiful female who falls in love with the hero and helps him defeat the main badguy, comic relief and cute kid showed up as well. Plus lots of fights and other cool scenes. So all in all it was a good movie and worth seeing. Not too many nits and the Rock did do his eyebrow again.

While preparing Theater 2 for the Enough screening Friday, I walked into Theater 1 to see the beginning of Scorpion King.

A lot of pompous sword-and-scorcery-movie-type dialgoue heralding an execution.

Arrows that cause the men hit with them to FLY BACKWARD across the room and SMASH out the side of the building.

The hero showing up and saying, "Boo," and the crowd of bad guys running for their lives.

Gee, let me think..............Uh-uh. No thanks.

All very true Luigi, although please allow me to qualify what I meant. Yes it was a standard no-brainer formula action movie/sword and sorcery. Being a D&D player/Gamemaster and fan of the movies in the sword and fantasy genre (as well as a few historical or as my wife calls some of them like Knights Tale History lite) I liked it. (As a matter of fact I think I've had a chracter run through this game :-) ) Occasionally I go to and do like a move that isn't as mentally stimulating as some might be. I enjoyed the Imposter, I enjoyed the Matrix both made me think about what was going on. But I also enjoyed Armageddon, Kull the Conqueror and a Knights Tale. Now while I probably wouldn't bring Scorpion King up to the same level as the others it was still a good movie IF a person wants to spend a couple hours watching your typical good guy beating up the bad guys and getting the kingdom and the girl movie. All in all I liked it for what it was. And as for the arrows to give an RPG answer (Aside from BILC) The rock's bow was a special one made for his superior strength and fired a more powerful arrow at a faster speed. I say this since one of the bad guys winds up trying to pull his bow later in the movie and is unable to do so.

Oh, I was in no way responding to your first post, Lolar. In fact, I only skimmed through it. I was just giving my impression, not responding directly to you. :)

Is ok. I had a rather negative week last week and so far this week isn't looking much better. I must be burning karma points at a vastly accelerated rate.

Ahhhh...I saw this movie...do I dare post all of the nits Morgan and I found?

Hrmmmm.........

Do I want to usurp Luigi's place as the Nitcentral NitNoveler?

NitNoveler?

By Blue Berry on Sunday, April 28, 2002 - 3:50 am:

This is one movie that is as nit proof as an episode of Xena: Warrior Princess. As long as chicks in scanty armor (C'mon, what's it protecting?:)) and sword fights and cheap looking CGI monsters and explosions (some guy invented gunpowder? Don't ask just enjoy the nearly naked chicks:)) then just suspend disbelief way more than usual.

Sorry. NitNovelist.

Slightly off-topic, but part of the genre: In the 1980's, there was a rash of "barbarian swordperson" flicks. One that I think Nitpickers might enjoy was called Deathstalker II, a sequel (in name only) to the wholly forgettable Deathstalker. The sequel absolutely didn't take itself seriously, and made fun of the whole genre. (One of the opening lines was "I'll have my revenge, and Deatstalker, too!" Gotta love those awful puns!)
Oh, and Blue Berry, it has it's share of scantily-clad chicks. None in sports bras, though.

I thought it was better than The Mummy Returns.

Blue Berry: What cheap CGI monsters? The ants? (I miss the scarabs)

I liked this movie. Most of it anyway. I thought that the Rock's acting was fine. I probably won't see it in the theater again, but I'll end up buying it.

This was the final of five movies I saw on the airplane from Sydney last week, it was hilarious. It's so over the top that you just have to laugh. :)

When this movie first made it to television censors missed the glimpse of frontal nudity when that Asian women climbed on top of the Rock. I don't doubt it's been corrected by now but the FCC is pretty much useless anyway.

I just bought the collector's set of the mummy and mummy returns, and they have within it, the movie called the Scorpion King... which looks to be a spin off of the character in the mummy returns...

Should this be placed under the mummy movies since is it's sort of back story... however goofy and over the top it may be?

I heard that there's going to be a Scopian King 2, I wonder if the Rock will be in it.

By Brian FitzGerald on Monday, August 04, 2008 - 11:24 am:

Looks like the sequel is about to come out on DVD. I saw a commercial last night. The Rock will not be returning, he was asked but turned it down. Probably because of money, it's a direct-to-video DVD release, I doubt they were offering the kind of money that he makes doing major motion pictures. They recast the role of Mathayus with some random no name.
