Being John Malkvoich

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Comedy: Being John Malkvoich

I had originally posted this on this nit for all seasons board, but since I can now make a board, I shall relocate it here......

"Being John Malkovich; Much and all as I love this film, and much and all as I hate to pour pee in the punch, it does not seem quite so dazzlingly original when you read The Drawing Of The Three by Stephen King, second book in the whole Dark Tower series, also, my favourite ever set of books.
But anyhoo, both feature doors.Just plain old doors; Craig finds his buried behind a filing cabinet, while the Gunslinger finds three doors standing in mid-air on a beach. Both find that the doors lead into people, where they can see through that persons eyes, and later they both learn that they can take control of that person when they want to.
Granted, the Drawing was a serious book, and the film went for a totally different surreal comedy approach, and I think they're both great. But as I said, the film ain't too original for me anymore."

But I just can't stay mad at this film for long. It's far too weird for that. I wasn't quite sure what category to put this under. Perhaps fantasy, or drama. But I figured first and foremost, it's a comedy. And there's no board for "Bizarre Twisted Love Stories", so I put it here. I gotta praise Spike Jonze and the makers for not turning this film into a one-joke show. It would have been so easy to just do a load of jokes about different people going into the portal and, hey, Being John Malkovich, but they somehow manage to turn it into the aforementioned weird love story. It shows a scary amount of skill. And the DVD is worth buying for two of the extras; One is a button which says, "There is nothing here". And sure enough when you click on it, it takes you to a screen that says "There is nothing here.Press return to exit." And the other is the directors interview in which Jonze becomes increasingly distracted before hopping out of his car to puke on the side of the road. It's all so gloriously insane.........

So, after watching the aforementioned DVD, there's one big nit that pops out at me. In the short time of eight months, are we really to believe that Craig worked "Malkovitch"'s puppeteering career up so much that he could be that famous? I think eight months is a bit of a stretch.

Sparrow: Stranger things have happened in that business (the entertainment one). Survivor cast members are getting their own radio shows now.
