Bruce Almighty

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Comedy: Bruce Almighty
By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, March 08, 2003 - 9:53 pm:

Pretty funny. Not as funny as Liar, Liar, but it had its moments.

Like Liar, Liar, the movie uses a supernatural running gag to help the main character come to a personal realization. The gags were funny, Jim Carrey was hilarious as usual, and Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Aniston were great, and Aniston looked hot. (Especially in that outfit she had on when Jim Carrey tells he got the anchor job).

NITS:
In the scene where Susan tries to seduce Bruce, Bruce tells her that he and Grace had a fight. Um, no they didn’t. At that point, everything was fine between them. Sure, Grace was disappointed that Bruce didn’t pop the question at their dinner, but there was no fight. Cut scene?

When Bruce goes back to the building looking for God and finds it deserted, as he runs through it, you can see the shadow of a figure on one of the columns on the left.

Anyone want the poster? I almost forgot to mention it. If you don't know what it looks like, this is the image.

First person to email me or post here in response gets it. Free. :)

By Merat on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 10:27 pm:

I'd love to have that, Luigi. :)

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 6:49 am:

Done. I've sent you an email asking you where to send it. :)

By Brian Webber, Poster Boy on Thursday, March 13, 2003 - 9:12 pm:

Luigi: If every inch of my bedroom walls weren't covered with movie posters I'd ask you if you had any others you wanted to get rid of. :( I have posters for Congo, Duets, The Perfect Storm, What Lies Beneath, Chicken Run (3 of 'em!), Dr. T, Space Cowboys, Original Kings of Comedy, The Skulls, Scream 3, Gladiator, Almost Famous, Spinal Tap, In The Mouth of Madness, The Patriot, Titan A.E., Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her, and Screwed.

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 8:22 am:

Nope, I have none. I just cut 'em up for the photos and throw 'em out. The only reason I took the Bruce Almighty one was that I thought someone on Nit-C would want it, same reason I took those ST Nemesis press folders.

By Merat on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 4:13 pm:

Luigi, what email address did you send it to?

My address is MeratTheNit@yahoo.com

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 11:10 pm:

I sent it to meridocbrandybuck@yahoo.com. That's not your address anymore? Do you have two, or did you do away with the meridoc one?

Anyway, I'm going to send one to this new one too.

If Bruce only has power over the Buffalo area, as God tells him, then how can he affect the Moon, or steer an asteroid to crash in Buffalo? Does God consider objects in outer space to be in the jurisdiction of Buffalo?

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 5:29 am:

Grace makes a big deal out of the fact that she has blood type AB+... The thing is, AB+ is the most rarest type of blood. It's rather pointless to donate it because only people with type AB blood can accept it. People who have AB blood can accept any type are universal recipients, not universal donors. People with type O are universal donors.

By Brian Fitzgerald on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 4:35 pm:

actualy I think that AB- is the rarest type of blood to have.

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 6:54 pm:

It says here that AB is the least common, without specifying the RH factor.

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 7:41 am:

This is really dumb. God leaves messages on Bruce’s pager, and they actually show Bruce’s pager number, but instead of using the “555” prefix usually used in TV and movies, they used a real prefix. Universal Studios claims that the prefix was chosen because it doesn’t exist in Buffalo, NY, where the film is set, but that’s really stupid. The prefix is valid in other parts of the country, and sure enough, people in various parts of the country with the number shown in the movie are getting calls from cranks, desperate souls, and the curious, and a number of news stories have popped up about it. Here are two of them here and here.

By ScottN on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 8:55 am:

Besides, they should have used 555, and then Carrey could have said something about how that number doesn't exist, and call it anyways... and behold! Morgan Freeman answers! Just to kind of prove he's The Almighty.

By TomM on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 10:01 am:

One news source tried to take a lighter approach to the problem

I'll admit that the thinking was short-sighted. But I've noticed lots of films today avoiding the 555 prefix. This is probably because most people recognize it as a fake number... and it's become a joke. Using 555 simply breaks the fourth wall and can draw the audience out of the film (I'm sure we've all heard audience members giggle when 555 gets used in a movie).

I think under most circumstances Universal's idea to simply avoid using a prefix from the area where the movie is set works. Unfortunately, the subject matter of Bruce Almighty is such that it had this unexpected (and unfortunate to some) result.

Although I agree that ScottN's suggestion would have been a clever way to use the number.

When Grace asks for a small coffee, the coffee she gets doesn't look very small to me... It looks like a large.

By NSetzer (Nsetzer) on Sunday, June 01, 2003 - 8:20 am:

ScottN, how can you tell? There appears to be no standard for the beverage size "small".

By ScottN on Sunday, June 01, 2003 - 10:08 am:

That cup looks to be about 20 oz. A "small" coffee is usually (to my mind) about 12 oz.

By ScottN, Caffeinehead on Sunday, June 01, 2003 - 10:09 am:

Pardon me, the username on that one should have read "ScottN, caffeinehead".

By Sarah on Monday, January 19, 2004 - 7:27 pm:

Did anyone notice in the DVD release they have changed the phone number on the beeper to one using the 555 prefix? They even changed Jim Carey's voice saying the old number. Guess they got tired of being criticized for using a real phone number!

By LUIGI NOVI on Saturday, January 24, 2004 - 5:12 pm:

Wouldn't Grace FREAK OUT upon seeing the moon so close to the Earth?

If the one limitation on Bruce's power (aside from being limited to Buffalo) is that he can't mess with free will, then how can he take control of Evan like a puppet to make him babble on the air and make a fool out of him?

Staying up all night to answer the 1.5 million prayers on his computer, Bruce needs coffee by morning to stay awake. Why? If he's omnipotent, he can simply will himself awake. Similarly, why would he even need to use the keyboard to answer his prayers? All of these gestures he makes, like physically parting the tomato soup, brushing away the clouds, lassoing the moon, or making stars brighter, would be redundant for someone with God's power.

One has to wonder how Bruce can answer "Yes" to all the prayers. What happens if both teams playing a sporting event pray to win?

By LUIGI NOVI on Sunday, February 01, 2004 - 11:16 pm:

Do the door numbers on Street Addresses ever have five numbers in them? I don't recall ever encountering this, but when Bruce calls the number on his pager, the voice gives an address with such a number.

By ScottN on Sunday, February 01, 2004 - 11:25 pm:

Yes. Where I live, 5 digitaddresses are common.

By ccabe on Monday, February 02, 2004 - 8:13 am:

The 5 digitaddresses are rare, but not unheard of where I live. (PS The house on Malcom in the middle has such an address, 10 thousand something.)

By ScottN on Monday, February 02, 2004 - 8:59 am:

OK, CCabe. I get the point. I'll look at the preview window in the future. Happy now? :)

By Darth Sarcasm on Monday, February 02, 2004 - 2:58 pm:

Any place with 100 Street/Avenue or greater is going to have addresses with 5 digits. Of course, this is usually in major metropolitan areas.

By Machiko Jenkins (Mjenkins) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 12:48 pm:

Hey! My apartment building number has 5 digits!

By Richard Davies on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 2:07 pm:

I did hear about someone who was planning legal action because their phone number was the same as the one quoted, & got lots of strange calls. I guess they changed it on the DVD release to stop any other litigation.

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Tuesday, July 04, 2023 - 7:15 am:
