That's great! I almost fell off my chair laughing :)

On a more serious note, the story at this url explains why we haven't screened it (it doesn't work as a link, so you have to cut and paste the url):

On the radio show I listened to this morning (Q-104.3's Radio Chick) the Chick and her crew were discussing this movie. It was said that people, including critics, were walking out of a screening that was held this past Monday night. The Chick and her crew also noted that Gigli contained what may be the worst line of dialog in film history.
Luigi, I remember what you said on the Enough board, about Jennifer Lopez getting roles that other actresses turned down. According to the article, that holds true here, as J-Lo signed on after Halle Berry had dropped out.

By Tri-Sarah-Tops on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 3:26 pm:

Doesn't look good so far..

Read reviews

By kerriem on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 6:36 pm:

Hey, it's a movie about a dumber-than-bricks enforcer who kidnaps a mentally-challenged witness with the help of a sexy lesbian hit woman. It didn't look good from the beginning. :)

By Adam Bomb on Thursday, July 31, 2003 - 9:49 am:

Some critics are calling this pic "Worst Movie Ever." Then again, Battlefield Earth was called "Worst Movie of the Millenium."
New York Daily News critic Jami Bernard reviewed the film today, giving it one star. She also lists six low points from the film with the headline "Save $10 and your dignity." On the opposite page, critic Jack Matthews lists other major bombs, including Ishtar, Hudson Hawk and the forgotten Moonie pic Inchon. Surprisingly, he left out Hollywood's most notorious bomb, Heaven's Gate.

By Miko Iko on Thursday, July 31, 2003 - 1:51 pm:

Worst movie ever?!!!...my, my, my, how short a memory these critics have...

Not that I am defending Gigli, or even planning to see it at any time (I'll take its alleged badness at face value), I just can't see how something that's all cliched-and-offensive badness can compare to the painfully-saturated-with-incompetence badness of Manos, the Hands of Fate or The Creeping Terror.

Shouldn't the fun of reviewing flicks like this be in coming up with some new form of hyperbole?

(...yes, I know...now I've used up my lifetime's allotment of using the word "badness"...)

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, July 31, 2003 - 7:03 pm:

I wonder if it'll be as bad as The Core and Charlie's Angels2, which have thus far been the two most mindless films of the year.

By Adam Bomb on Thursday, July 31, 2003 - 10:01 pm:

There is a difference between the badness of films like The Creeping Terror, Manos or Plan 9 and the badness of Gigli. Those three horror films were low-level productions, probably financed outside the Hollywood establishment, and aspired to really nothing. Gigli is a $54 million dollar production, starring major talent, and written and directed by Martin Brest, who has an established track record. (He directed Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run and Scent Of A Woman.) This only proves that even the mighty can fall flat on their face.

Adam: A-hem, just cause a movie tnaks at the box ofice doesn't mean it's bad. heaven's Gate is probably the most underrated movie of all time.

By Adam Bomb on Friday, August 01, 2003 - 7:41 am:

Heaven's Gate was savaged by critics upon its initial release (in its original, three-hour plus version) in November, 1980. It was pulled from its reserved seat engagements after one week for re-editing. When re-released in its shorter version several months later, it still got poor reviews, and tanked at the box office. The studio that produced Gate, United Artists, was in such poor shape financially that it had to merge with MGM. To be fair, I've read a lot of postings concerning Gate on the IMDB message boards, and most of them feel that Gate was unfairly maligned. Maybe the tide is turning in its favor, Brian.

Back to Gigli. Jonathan Foreman of the New York Post called it a "stuffed turkey", and says it's "an inept attempt to do Elmore Leonard by Martin Brest."

By LUIGI NOVI on Friday, August 01, 2003 - 12:06 pm:

I wonder if it'll be as bad as Shaolin Soccer?

By Tri-Sarah-Tops on Friday, August 01, 2003 - 1:04 pm:

Roger Ebert gave it **1/2 stars.

Is anyone planning to go see just how bad it really is?

By Brian Fitzgerald on Friday, August 01, 2003 - 10:02 pm:

Also don't forget that without hearing anything about quailty many were waiting for a chance to trash it. Afflick and Lopez were unlikely stars from the begining to become as big as they have and go as hollywood as they have (going from indi films to Jerry Bruckheimer, singing career, him in her videos) has caused many go turn aginst them. Even if it's just a mediocre move they were waiting for jen and ben to fall and this is it. It is opened season.

By kerriem on Saturday, August 02, 2003 - 10:48 am:

Dunno - I saw several reviews on rottentomatoes.com that began with some variation of 'As nice as it would be to prove the nay-sayers wrong...' or 'Despite my best efforts to ignore...'
But as one put it, it's like trying to see down a tunnel cluttered with wires and debris. A clear view probably will never be possible.

Myself, I can say with perfect honesty that my problems with the movie have nothing to do with the casting, and everything to do with it's plot, as stated above...well, that, and I can imagine 'Bennifer' as mob types about as well as I can Kermit and Miss Piggy. :O
Oh, and did I mention the incredibly idiotic portrayal of the mentally handicapped, not to mention lesbianism?

Gigli did a Sherman tank job at the box office this past weekend, earning just $3.8 million to place it number 8. Enough did better last year.

By Since theres no board for Jersey Girl under Kevin Smith Movies... on Tuesday, August 05, 2003 - 3:03 pm:

IMDB ran a story and summarizes Kevin's recent comments on the theories running abound that Gigli's box office will effect Jersey Girl. Here's the story:

Jersey Girl director Kevin Smith is convinced the appalling reviews for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's new film Gigli won't affect box office sales for his upcoming venture. Real life couple and Jersey Girl stars Ben and Jen have watched as reviewer after reviewer have slammed Gigli for bad performances and poor plot - but Smith does not think the same can be said of his production. Speaking on his View Askew website, Smith says, "As far as all this worrying about that this weekend's Gigli reception means for Jersey Girl - don't waste your energy. We're gonna be fine. Apples and oranges. S***, apples and blowjobs, really. No further prognostication necessary. I know it's a hot topic this weekend for obvious reasons, but lest we have to endure all this nail-biting speculation for the next eight months, let's curb it now. Whatever's gonna happen's gonna happen. If it's any consolation, I'm not sweating it." Smith says the reaction of test audiences to Jersey Girl has more than cemented his faith in the film. He explains, "I've seen Jersey Girl with audiences. I know all the stuff regarding the release plans for the flick that we don't talk about here. And while I'm sorry that Gigli didn't do better this weekend, its critical reaction and box office take won't have the slightest effect on Jersey Girl. Take my word for it."

Actually I liked Shaolin Soccer. Just goofy enough to be funny and had some kinda cool "fights" I guess you could say. Then again I do have a slight tendency towards masochistim.

By Taoiseach on Wednesday, August 06, 2003 - 3:00 pm:

Can't remember where I saw it (probably linked at Fark.com), but some writer/reviewer did the math on Gigli - $3.8 million divided by the number of screens it opened on divided by the average number of showings in the weekend, and came up with a rough calculation of an average of 10 patrons per showing of the movie. Now that's tanking.

:) :) :)

That's an interesting comment one person made on that message board. You know how the IMDB pick one user review as a 'header'? Well they always seem to pick bad reviews for quite good movies and good reviews for quite bad movies. What sort of tactic is that?

(Sorry if this is unrelated BTW).

By D. Stuart on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 - 2:31 pm:

Shouldn't this movie be under Horror? (;

By Jeff Winters (Jeff1980) on Monday, July 03, 2023 - 1:42 pm:

Was Gigli really that bad ?

By Tim McCree (Tim_m) on Tuesday, July 04, 2023 - 3:50 am:

Watch it and decide for yourself.

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Tuesday, July 04, 2023 - 7:46 am:

I doubt you can rent DVDs anymore. Even if you could, the movie has such a bad reputation, it would be hard to find. And as for streaming, Gigli is, for now, available on pay apps. It's pretty much disappeared from the cable movie channels.

I've read a lot of postings concerning "Heaven's Gate" on the IMDB message boards, and most of them feel that "Gate" was unfairly maligned.

I believe it was. I finally did see the movie a while back, when my late brother got a Roku. It's definitely worth a look. And, it was the long (over three hours) version.
