Dave

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Comedy: Dave
By Adam Bomb on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 2:18 pm:

A Capra-esque 1993 comedy. Kevin Kline plays a dual role here-as creepy, philandering President Bill Mitchell, and as idealistic D.C.-area employment agency owner Dave Kovic. Their lives intertwine when Dave is enlisted to impersonate the President after the Commander-In-Chief suffers a debilitating stroke. Dave starts to see problems all around him, and begins to take the job seriously. Good supporting cast, including Frank Langella as the totally unlikable chief of staff, Sigourney Weaver as First Lady Ellen Mitchell, and Ben Kingsley as the Vice President. Look for Ving Rhames (with hair) as a Secret Service agent who becomes Dave's confidante, and Laura Linney as the object of Mitchell's affection. Many cameos by real-life Senators, Congressmen (including the late Tip O'Neill) and newspeople.

Kevin Kline turns in two great perfs here, as the slimy President, and the titular character, who starts becoming very Presidential.

Nitpick-The Ford Tempo we see Dave and the First Lady riding in switches back and forth from regular style seat belts to the pesky door-mounted shoulder belt. Although the automatic belt was removed from the car, the mounting hook remains. Also, Dave and the First Lady don't wear their seat belts at all. That's a no-no.

More real-life people.

Ben Stein shows upp at Bob Alexander's (Langella) party. Ben Stein was a Nixon speechwriter before cashing in on his dull voice.

Forgot to put that in, Scott. Did that make Bob Alexander a Republican, BTW?

When we see the White House from the park across the street, it shimmers a tiny bit, giving away the shot as an optical effect.

The "Bob Alexander for President" sign is in the same style as the Clinton/Gore posters.

I loved Oliver Stone's scene where he tries to convince an incredulous Larry King that the President has been replaced by a lookalike!

In the press conference scene, one of the cameras has "CCN" on it. That was from the "Clamp Cable Network" in Gremlins 2.

I still don't know why no one ever cast Frank Langella in a Warren G. Harding biopic.
