Actors We Confuse

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: The Cutting Room Floor (The Movies Kitchen Sink): People in Film: Actors We Confuse
By MikeC on Saturday, August 30, 2003 - 4:33 pm:

I think it's interesting--let's think of actors/actresses that we confuse either by physical similarities or by similar names.

Here's a good similar name one:

Kelly Preston
Kelly McGillis
Kelly Lynch

Three blonde actresses all named Kelly. Yikes.

By John A. Lang on Sunday, August 31, 2003 - 7:35 am:

There's also:

Ann Robinson (B-Movie actress)
Anne Robinson (Game show host- The Weakest Link)

Elizabeth Berkley ("Showgirls" star)
Elizabeth Hurley (Actress)

By Brian Webber on Sunday, August 31, 2003 - 1:56 pm:

This isn't really confusion, but an eerie resemblance situation.

Helen Hunt (As Good As It Gets)
Leelee Sobieski (Uprising)

By ScottN on Sunday, August 31, 2003 - 2:22 pm:

That would be "Separated at Birth".

By Anonymous on Sunday, August 31, 2003 - 8:17 pm:

Bill Paxton (Twister)
Bill Pullman (Independence Day)

By Josh M on Sunday, August 31, 2003 - 11:18 pm:

Jeff Bridges and Jeff Daniels.

And when I was much younger, I didn't know the difference between Christian Slater and Keanu Reeves. But, then again, I'd never seen either.

By CR on Monday, September 01, 2003 - 7:06 am:

No, since Leelee Sobieski is so much younger than Helen Hunt, she must be her clone! (I figured I wasn't the only one to notice the similarity; I wonder if either actress gets sick of people making the comparison...)

By Adam Bomb on Monday, September 01, 2003 - 10:50 am:

David Keith (An Officer and a Gentleman, The Lords of Discipline)
Keith David (Armageddon, There's Something About Mary)

By MikeC on Monday, September 01, 2003 - 3:34 pm:

Darrell Evans (underrated third baseman)
Dwight Evans (underrated outfielder)

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, September 02, 2003 - 12:00 pm:

Katherine Hepburn (On Golden Pond)
Audrey Hepburn (The Nun's Story)

Mike Douglas (former talk show host)
Michael Douglas (Kirk's son)

John Williams (Conductor / composer)
John Williams (Guitarist)

Jonny Lang (Famous song writer)
John A. Lang (Non-famous nitpicker) :)

By Dude on Tuesday, September 02, 2003 - 1:53 pm:

Jeremy London (Mallrats)
Jason London (Dazed and Confused (I think))

Of course theya re twins, althoguht their acting skills certianly aren't identical *cough Jeremy London sucks cough*

By Richard Davies on Tuesday, September 02, 2003 - 2:15 pm:

Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins, Sound Of Music)
Julie Walters (Calender Girls, Victoria Wood's sidekick, Many British films)

It's not just names, it can be looks as well.
Wynona Ryder, Shannen Dochoty, Christina Ricci, Natalie Porterman

Are the above are of the 'Minigoth' school of looks. If there were to be a big budget all-star Hollywood version of Blake's 7 they would be shortlisted for parts as mutoids.

By Richard Davies on Tuesday, September 02, 2003 - 2:17 pm:

It's got to be done:

Richard Davies: Old Welsh Actor
Richard Davies: Member of Supertramp
Richard Davies: Australian Folk Singer
Richard Davies: Darts Player
Richard Davies: Nitpicker

By Brian Webber on Tuesday, September 02, 2003 - 3:20 pm:

Brian D Webber: Writer, Nitpicker, Webmaster
Brian M Webber: Award winning South African actor.

:)

By MikeC on Tuesday, September 02, 2003 - 4:51 pm:

Reginald Denny
Reginald Gardiner
Reginald Owen

Three actors who made their living playing stuffy Brits.

FameTracker.Com has a section "2 Stars: 1 Slot," which focuses on similar performers whether by looks or by types of roles. I like the recent Robert Patrick/Ray Liotta one. It's not always the same (in "Narc," Liotta looks completely different), but in "Identity," Liotta had a very Robert Patrick-like role and style about him.

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, September 02, 2003 - 6:26 pm:

Richard: I think you meant Shannen Doherty & Natalie Portman. Right?

By LUIGI NOVI on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 6:17 am:

Richard Davies: It's not just names, it can be looks as well. Wynona Ryder, Shannen Dochoty, Christina Ricci, Natalie Porterman
Luigi Novi: ??????? Huh???? None of these women look a thing alike.

By Slashdotter on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 9:13 am:

Well, when Natalie is petrified with hot grits...

By Darth Sarcasm on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 9:19 am:

To you, perhaps. And I can certainly tell them apart. But I don't think they don't "look a thing alike." There are some similarities... particularly in that elfin waif sort of way.

I thnk Monica Potter (Patch Adams, Along Came a Spider) looks a lot like Julia Roberts.

And there's that new guy on O.C. who looks like a young Russel Crowe.

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 12:21 pm:

George Reeves
Christopher Reeve

Eva Gabor
Zza Zza Gabor (Yeah, I know they're sisters, but they're hard to tell apart)

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 12:27 pm:

John Stevenson Lang (actor)
John Lang (composer, actor)
John Lang (sound department member)

Whoa! :) It's amazing what you can find at IMDB.COM !

By Nove Rockhoomer on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 1:20 pm:

There's also:
1. George Miller (director of the Mad Max movies)
2. George Miller (director of The Man From Snowy River and The Never Ending Story II)
3. George Miller (stand-up comedian)

I knew about those already, but the IMDB lists a total of ten people by that name in the actor & director categories.

This past weekend at Dragon Con in Atlanta, I attended a talk by Chase Masterson of DS9. An audience member asked if she was ever confused with Lacey Chabert. Umm...Lacey's only 20, so I don't think so... (they both have that helium voice though)

At a panel on "The Young Ones," an audience member said that Emma Samms was a guest on that series, but it was actually Emma Thompson. They're both British, but they look nothing alike.

By Duke of Earl Grey on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 3:10 pm:

Nick Nolte
Gary Busy

By Mys on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 3:43 pm:

Wow, these are terrific.

How about George "Segregation now, segregation fo-evah" Wallace, and the black comedian of the same name? They look nothing alike, and they're not actors, but still.

By Josh M on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 4:25 pm:

Luigi Novi: ??????? Huh???? None of these women look a thing alike
Well, that's YOUR opinion, isn't it? They seem to look alike to Richard.

I think maybe Winona and Natalie do.

A little.

Nick Nolte
Gary Busy

Yeah, that one is definitely true.

By Dude on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 5:09 pm:

Lochlyn Munro (Scary Movie)
Jake Busey (Starship Troopers)

Granted Busey is noticeably taller but still...

By UPN FAN, just kidding on Wednesday, September 03, 2003 - 5:29 pm:

Jeri Ryan
Jolene Blalock

(well from the neck down):)

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, September 04, 2003 - 2:41 am:

Darth Sarcasm: I thnk Monica Potter (Patch Adams, Along Came a Spider) looks a lot like Julia Roberts.
Luigi Novi: She does. The dark eyes and the full lips create a resemblance.

John A. Lang:
George Reeves
Christopher Reeve

Luigi Novi: ??????? In what way does anyone confuse these two people?

UPN FAN, just kidding:
Jeri Ryan
Jolene Blalock
(well from the neck down)

Luigi Novi: I don’t think they look anything alike from the neck down. Jeri’s look quite real. :)

This is my list of celebrities who I don’t confuse, but who bear resemblances to one another. If you don’t know who some of these people are, go to imdb.com, or do a Google Image Search.

Helen Hunt Leelee Sobieski
David Keith Robert Wuhl
Michele Pfeiffer Jamie Pressley
Julia Roberts Monica Potter
Bill Maher Breckin Meyer
Susan Sarandon Nina Blackwood
Tom Skerrit Kris Kristofferson
Larry King DJ Qualls
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio Laura Harring

Christian Slater Jack Nicholson
Matthew McConaughey Paul Newman
Matthew McConaughey Christian Bale
Tobey Maguire Kieran Culkin
Stanley Kubrick Salman Rushdie
Jolene Blalock Anita Blonde
Lecy Goranson Jonathan Brandis
Thora Birch Gauge
Anna Thompson Houston

By MikeC on Thursday, September 04, 2003 - 6:29 am:

Pat Zachry--baseball pitcher that the Mets acquired for Tom Seaver
Tom Zachary--baseball pitcher that gave up Babe Ruth's 60th homer in '27

Brian Kingman--last pitcher to win 20 games in a season (whither Mike Maroth?)
Dave Kingman--one-dimensional slugger

Jack Morris--great pitcher best known for 1991 Game 7 masterpiece
Jim Morris--"The Rookie"

I know it's not really fair to do relatives, but I confuse the two Niekros, Joe and Phil (Phil was better), and the various Alous--Felipe, Jesus, and Matty (Felipe was the best). I don't confuse the two Perrys, Gaylord and Jim.

By Duke of Earl Grey on Thursday, September 04, 2003 - 7:52 am:

Chris Rock
Chris Tucker

(I've never confused them; my roommate has)

By JOhnaLang A and B on Thursday, September 04, 2003 - 8:49 am:

John ! there is another JohnaLang at aol.com and he said you got the wrong phone number :)

By John A. Lang on Thursday, September 04, 2003 - 10:26 am:

Luigi: Allow me to clarify. I wasn't talking about George Reeves & Christopher Reeve looking alike, I was referring to the last names sounding alike. (Ironically enough, Reeve has the "S" missing from his last name) Plus, as you know, both men played "Superman"

By Influx on Thursday, September 04, 2003 - 2:55 pm:

Beverly Garland (B-movie fave) and
Annette Bening

both look like the new Columbia Pictures torch-holding gal (though my vote goes to BG).

By Butch Brookshier on Saturday, September 06, 2003 - 11:44 am:

Two tough guy character actors I long thought were the same person using two different names were Mike Mazurki and Mickey Shaugnessy. Surprisingly (to me anyway) they apparently only worked together on "The Chicago Teddy Bears" TV show.
Also,
Ray Charles, famous R&B singer
Ray Charles, founder of the Ray Charles Singers, also was vocal arranger for Perry Como.

By Richard Davies on Saturday, September 06, 2003 - 2:49 pm:

Not actors but still confusing:

Robbie Neville - Singer
Robbie Fowler - Footballer
Garry & Phil Neville - Footballers

Another name clash with Robbie Fowler is with the names of a couple of Eastenders characters, Robbie Jackson & Mark Fowler.

By Joe King on Saturday, September 06, 2003 - 2:52 pm:

Mel B - Spice Girl
Mel C - Spice Girl
Melee (Mel A) - a fight in a crowd.

Thanks to Alister McGowen for this!

By Richard Davies on Tuesday, September 09, 2003 - 2:45 pm:

David Copperfield - Charles Dickens novel
David Copperfield - 1980s British comedian
David Copperfield - American illusionist

By Darth Sarcasm on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 - 10:52 am:

This reminds me of the time I worked in a bookstore and one of the other employees had shelved David Copperfield in the C's, rather than the D's.

By John A. Lang on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 12:14 pm:

Edward Albert: DS9 co-star & actor
Eddie Albert: Star of "Green Acres"

By MikeC on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 12:52 pm:

They don't look anything alike, but I always thought their voices were similar: James Sloyan and David Warner.

By Robert Emilfarb on Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 5:46 pm:

Ooh, and you might as well add Alan Rickman to the mix there. At least sometimes.

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 2:20 pm:

Eddie Albert and Edward Albert are father and son. Edward Albert is married to Kate Woodville, who played Natira in the Trek episode "For The World Is Hollow, and I Have Touched The Sky." Ms. Woodville was previously married to Patrick Macnee of "The Avengers."

George Reeves' birth name was George Brewer, but he was adopted by his stepfather and took the name Bessolo. Kind of like ex-President Bill Clinton, who was born William Blythe.

(See what you can learn from IMDB.)

By Richard Davies on Friday, February 13, 2004 - 2:39 pm:

Francois Van Der Elst - Belgian footballer of the 1970s & 1980s
Franky Van Der Elst - Belgian footballer of the 1980s & 1990s. A few sporting publications ge these 2 mixed up. Other footballers who share names & times in the game include Gary Stevens (both played for England at the same time), Andy Gray & Dave Watson.

By Brian Kelly on Thursday, September 08, 2005 - 12:07 pm:

Back in July, I saw the trailer for the movie "Just Like Heaven" on Entertainment Tonight and went to the IMDB a few hours later to check it out. I looked up and down Renee Zellweger's filmography and couldn't find it. I was a little confused at first, then something dawned on me. I then went over to Resse Witherspoon's listing. There it was.

On a side note, should I be questioning my manhood if I actually want to see a movie with Reese Witherspoon in it?

By Brian FitzGerald on Thursday, September 08, 2005 - 2:46 pm:

If it's one of her latest ones than you should question your manhood. If it was Freeway or Twilight that you are fine.

I heard that a TV trailer for Blade: Trinity had to be recalled because the person why typed up the text at the end listed Jessica Biel as Jessica Alba.

By Richard Davies on Friday, September 09, 2005 - 7:34 am:

Me & my Dad caught the end of Roman Holiday last week, & I wasn't sure who was playing the lead male role. It looked like Cary Grant but I couldn't be certain. Checking it up it was actually Gregory Peck. I mentioned this so my Dad & he stated that Grant could have played that part just as well.

By Snick on Friday, September 09, 2005 - 10:22 am:

Grant was much too debonair. Peck was perfect for Joe Bradley, the staid American reporter.

By ScottN on Friday, September 09, 2005 - 10:48 am:

Grant was much too debonair

My favorite Grant line (from "North by Northwest") :

Quote:

Not that I mind a slight case of abduction now and then, but I have tickets for the theater this evening, to a show I was looking forward to and I get, well, kind of *unreasonable* about things like that.

Only Cary Grant could have pulled off a line like that and made it work.

By MikeC on Friday, September 09, 2005 - 10:50 am:

North by Northwest is one of my favorite movies--romance, suspense, humor, homoeroticism...it's all there.

By Snick on Friday, September 09, 2005 - 1:29 pm:

I much prefer Rear Window, but North by Northwest is an excellent film.

By Richard Davies on Saturday, September 10, 2005 - 2:52 am:

the IMDB entry for Roman Holiday mentions that Cary Grant was considered for the part I mentioned above.

By Adam Bomb on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - 10:31 am:

On a side note, should I be questioning my manhood if I actually want to see a movie with Reese Witherspoon in it?

Not really. I liked Legally Blonde a lot, although I saw it on pay cable, not in a theater. The sequel is a bit lame, though.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - 12:34 pm:

Why would anyone have to question their manhood for wanting to see Reese? She's hot.

By MikeC on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - 2:49 pm:

Ah, but Reese's MOVIES are for the most part, chick flicks through and through. At least lately.

By Josh M on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - 8:36 pm:

That's okay, I wanted to see Just Like Heaven. Then again, I like Ruffalo too.

By LUIGI NOVI on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - 11:03 pm:

Hey, if she's in a bikini, I'll watch it, I don't care if it's a chick flick (or as my brother-in-law calls them, two-hour douche commercials). :)

By ScottN on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 11:35 pm:

Off topic, but what the heck...

By MikeC on Thursday, September 04, 2003 - 07:29 am:

Brian Kingman--last pitcher to win 20 games in a season (whither Mike Maroth?)

Not any more. Bartolo Colon won 21 for the Angels.

By the 74s tm on Saturday, December 17, 2005 - 8:17 pm:

Er,isn't Brian Kingman the last person to lose 20 in 1980 something?

By Adam Bomb on Friday, February 17, 2006 - 9:11 am:

David Copperfield - American illusionist
He was born David Kotkin, in Metuchen, New Jersey.

By tim gueguen on Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 1:14 pm:

I sometimes confuse the roles played by Reese Witherspoon and Alicia Silverstone. Not a surprise given that they're both blondes, have somewhat similar voices, and hit the scene at about the same time.

By John A. Lang (Johnalang) on Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 2:25 pm:

In 2003 I mentioned:

John Williams (Conductor / composer)
John Williams (Guitarist)

but I forgot:

John Williams (British actor from "Family Affair" who played "The other Mr. French")

By LUIGI NOVI (Lnovi) on Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 5:21 pm:

I never really confuse Witherspoon and Silverstone. They look totally different (Witherspoon has both a pronounched forehead and chin---though she's still attractive), and I've never noticed a similarity in their voices. But hey, to each their own. :-)

By Mike Cheyne (Mikec) on Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 7:51 pm:

They play similar roles--at one point, I did confuse the two somewhat as well. Currently, they do look quite different though.

By Josh M on Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 9:52 pm:

Luigi Novi: (Witherspoon has both a pronounched forehead and chin---though she's still attractive)

You've certainly expressed that sentiment before

When I was younger, I used to confuse Pacino, De Niro, and Hoffman. Got past that phase, though.

I still can't tell the difference between Frances O'Connor and Marguerite Moreau.

By Kevin (Kevin) on Monday, January 29, 2007 - 5:07 am:

If I have a second to buffer my thoughts, I'm okay, but if not...I usually say 'Paul Newman' when I'm thinking of Steve McQueen, even though I have the two boxes of McQueen movies on my shelves and one box of Newman's cereal in my pantry. :-)
