Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: War: Pueblo (1973)

Altho' this is a tv movie I think it belongs under this heading.

The film chronicles the 1968 capture of the electronic intelligence ship USS Pueblo by North Korea, the captivity of the crew, and the subsequent US inquiry into the incident. Hal Halbrook stars as Pueblo's captain, Captain Lloyd Bucher, and won 2 Emmys in 1974 for the role. Other familiar faces include Ronny Cox, Soap's Richard Mulligan, Robert Ito of Quincy fame as a North Korean officer, and James Hong as chief of the North Korean prison camp the Pueblo crew are held in.

The movie was filmed on video tape. In combination with the often minimalist sets it tends to have the feel of a stage play. But the sparseness also keeps the focus on the story.

Like most older films an obvious nit is the guns used by the North Koreans, most if not all of which aren't Eastern Bloc weapons. One has a German MP40 submachine gun, while a scene were the North Koreans threaten to kill Bucher has the would be executioner using a British Webley revolver.

The Star Trek episode "The Enterprise Incident" was loosely based on the Pueblo Incident.
