Angels In America

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: TV Movies & Miniseries: Angels In America
By Adam Bomb on Sunday, December 21, 2003 - 1:49 am:

Has anyone out there in Nit Central land been watching this? HBO has been airing this six hour, $60 million (!) miniseries (based on the 1993 play) throughout this month. It's been run in two three hour parts, six hour long parts, and (I understand) at least once in its six-hour entirety.
Critics have called this "essential viewing" and "a masterpiece." From what little I saw (one hours' worth) I don't know if I can handle the other five. (I usually shy away from long form programming like this.) Some of the most grotesque overacting I've ever seen is on display here, from Al Pacino (as attorney Roy Cohn,) Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson. Particularly Mr. Pacino, who has done much over the top work since Scarface, but this looks like his most hideous perf since Devil's Advocate. Director Mike Nichols has has his good films (The Graduate, Biloxi Blues, Wolf) and disappointments (Catch-22, Regarding Henry.) in the past. Any further comments from you out there would be welcome.

We read the play in my English class. Maybe it's because of my religion, but I think the play would have been better without the weird "angel" angle.
