Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

Very funny film if pretty hit-and-miss, but since there's so many jokes, you'll most likely find something you like.

Vince Vaughn is pretty limp in the lead role; he's either "underacting" or he just couldn't work up any energy. I would have preferred a more magnetic actor in the role like Owen Wilson. Ben Stiller, on the other hand, is hyperkinetic and may either be very hilarious or very unfunny depending on your conception of the character. I would have preferred to see a non comedy actor cast in the role of White.

The supporting cast is great, however, and the film is stolen by Gary Cole (the boss from "Office Space") and Jason Bateman as the announcing crew for the dodgeball tournament (on ESPN 8--"The Ocho"). There are some well timed cameoes too, including a few that nearly prompted standing ovations from my crowd (the one at the airport is absolutely hilarious).

The film is serious for about five seconds, which I like in films like this where you don't really care about the story.

I think that my favorite would have to be Judge #3.

That was awesome too, although that was really just silly humor (they could have thrown anyone comparable to that person in). The one at the airport was great, especially by a person of his reputation and (supposed) attitude.

This was possibly the least funny movie I've seen all year. There was not a single funny joke or gag in it, and every potential avenue for humor was missed.

By MikeC on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 7:30 am:

Are you kidding? Not even Jason Bateman's character? The Dodgeball training film? The cameo at the airport?

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 9:10 am:

I don't see anything funny about Jason Bateman, the training film wasn't funny at all, nor were all the gratuitous, pointless, and unfunny cameos throughout the ENTIRE film. Why is William Shatner suddenly appearing funny? Or Chuck Norris? Or Hasselhoff? Or Armstrong? None of this was funny.

Perhaps you should check out Dodgeball.Origins.Org. :)

And how about some spoilers for your revelation of the cameos?

By LUIGI NOVI on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 11:26 am:

Ack! Sorry.

Wow, the more I talk to you the more i Dont like you Luigi, I mean, how can you hate Dodgeball?

By MikeC on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 2:22 pm:

I think that's a joke, so let's not start a flame war.

By Derrick Vargo on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 3:15 pm:

I have not known luigi to joke, plus i feel a war starting in RM, (much as i hate to say it)

By MikeC on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 3:21 pm:

No, I meant you joking about not "liking" Luigi--I didn't want people unfamiliar with RM to think you were insulting him because he didn't like a particular movie.

By Derrick Vargo on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 5:37 pm:

Ah, good call

Well, to each his own, eh?

Derrick Vargo: Wow, the more I talk to you the more i Dont like you Luigi, I mean, how can you hate Dodgeball?
Luigi Novi: I don't. I simly didn't find it funnier. But hey, if you want to decide to like or dislike people based on their tastes in films, then as Josh said, to each his own.

Derrick Vargo: I have not known luigi to joke...
Luigi Novi: Then you must not have read much of what I've posted here, which given your until-recent absence, isn't surprising.
