Video Game Adaptations

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: The Cutting Room Floor (The Movies Kitchen Sink): Adaptations from Other Media: Video Game Adaptations
By MarkN (Markn) on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 12:05 am:

Just thought of this tonight while reading an article about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starring in the upcoming videogame-to-movie Spy Hunter, and possibly the "Doom" movie as well. Both are interesting premises so I'm eager to see the one or both turn out to be. If they're both made and get so-so reviews then I might just wait for their DVD releases.

What do you all think of videogames that later had films made from them ("Final Fantasy" and "Resident Evil" also come to mind, the latter even having a sequel soon to be released), or movies that had videogames made from them, such as "Riddick", "The Thing" and the upcoming "Aliens Vs. Predator", whose trailer I saw today and it looks totally kickass! At least I hope it will be. I guess this could mostly be for those gamers who might have rather strong opinions about this subject. I'm a gamer who's played only a very small part a Resident Evil game, "Resident Evil 3: Nemesis" from where the main baddie in the next RE film hails from.

Well, I don't know about A v. P, since it was a comic book, then a SERIES of video games before it was a moive which isn't even going to based on the comic so I probably will wait for it on video and I can't beleive I said all that as I typed it without pausing for breath.

Anyway, here's my list of video game moives, seperated into categories;

Loved:
Final Fantasy (hey •••• you I liked it and I'm tired of defending it! :( )

Liked:
Mortal Kombat
Resident Evil
The Anime version of Street Fighter

Guilty Pleasure, Liked:
Super Mario Brothers (not great by any stretch of the imagination, but goofy fun)
The 1st Tomb Raider movie (frankly I wish they'd given Rimme-uh, I mean Chris Barries playing Lara Croft's loyal servant Hillary more to do)

Hated:
Street Fighter (the flick that killed Raoul Julia, I just know it)
Mortal Kombat Annihlation (think of how Trekkies felt having The Voyage Home followed immediately by The Final Frontier and I think you'll understand how I felt about this one)
Double Dragon (I can't even remember who was in it, that's how bad it was)

Haven't Seen, Therefore Withholding Judgement:
2nd Tomb Raider

Those are the only ones I can think of right now.

There's actually a wealth of anime "movies" that are based on video games (Sonic The Hedgehog, Tekken, and Battle Arena Toshinden immediately come to mind) unfortunately, most of them aren't much better than their western counterparts. For one thing, very few of them are actually "movies." Most of them are failed attempts at direct to video series that had to be wrapped up two two episodes due to poor sales and were edited together and called "movies" for American audiences.

Say, isn't there supposed to be a Crazy Taxi movie in the works somehwere?

The German Madman Uwe Boll, the man responsebile for the mess House of the Dead, has a horde of video game movies planned. Alone in the Dark is already in the can. Bloodrayne has already started filming. He's got plans for Dungen Seige, Fear Effect, The Suffering, and Dead or Alive already.

Other video game to movies in the works include the already mentioned Spy Hunter, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Metriod, and Shanubi.
I keep waiting for them to greenlight Tetris the movie.

TMG: I've heard of the BloodRayne project, and I hate to admit it, but it sounds pretty cool. GTA would tank at the box office. Not neccesarily because of qulaity, but becuase you'd get squsihed trying to get past the protestors. :-)

Final Fantasy was about the animation. Everything else about it wasn't important.

For me, the conversion usually works a lot better from movie to video game versus from video game to movie. I've played dozens of very good video games based on movies ("Goldeneye" for the Nintendo 64 being one of the best), but I can't really think of many good movies based on video games. "Tomb Raider" comes to my mind as being one of the better movies based on a video game.

I'd like to see a movie made of Katamari Damacy. It would have a wicked soundtrack, anyway!

(See my comments on the game in the Playstation topic. Probably the best cheapest game you can buy.)

Don't forget "Tron" (Or should we?)

By Influx on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - 6:39 am:

I was really excited about getting Tron 2.0 (the video game), if only to play LightCycles. That's just one part of the entire game, and I didn't realize it at first. I couldn't make it past the second level, and I'm usually pretty good at games. It requires lightning reflexes and precognition.

About a month ago, I realized that there was a whole 'nother aspect to the game, the mission part. So I started that up, got through the intro segments, finally got into the game, and realized it's almost impossible to play. Granted, I should have looked at the instruction book more closely, but I don't care too much for games that have too many controls, or are are not very intuitive. So, I actually un-installed it because I knew I'd never get back to it again.

BTW, I loved Tron, the movie.
