Intolerable Cruelty

Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Comedy: Intolerable Cruelty

I watched this Coen Brothers flick on HBO last night, and all I can say about it is that I'm glad I didn't spend nine or ten bucks on it in the theaters. "Intolerable Script and Acting" is more like it. Catherine Zeta Jones plays a golddigger, who marries wealthy men and promptly divorces them, taking their fortune in the process. George Clooney, in goofball mode, is an attorney who, of course, falls for her. Only the much-divorced Billy Bob Thornton is any fun here, and his role is too small to be effective. If you want a realistic depiction of divorce, watch repeats of Once and Again. I'm sure there are good comedies out there dealing with divorce; I just can't think of one right now. This, however, isn't one of them. Rated "PG-13" for adult situations and language.

The performances of the leads are nothing short of horrible. I know this is a comedy, but Clooney has done better work, especially in the glory days of ER. He was even much better in Batman and Robin. Here, he rolls his eyes and mugs for the cameras incessantly. Ms. Zeta Jones? The less said, the better.
