Hitchcock's version. Still one of the best thrillers ever made.
One of the best visuals I've seen in the movies is in here.
Thorwald's apartment across the courtyard, completely blacked out except for the glowing tip of his cigarette in the darkness. A perfect malevolent presence.
Urban legend has it that Hitchcock made up Raymond Burr's Thorwald to resemble producer David O. Selznick. Supposedly, he resented Selznick for his interference while Hitch was making his movies.
There is no producer credit given here, as was common with Hitchcock in his later years.
This film, as well as Hitch's classic Vertigo, were produced by Paramount. Now, all rights are held by Universal, who released the DVD's. The Paramount logo remains at the start of the film.
