Nitcentral's Bulletin Brash Reflections: Movies: Science Fiction/Fantasy: Dreamscape

Got this from Amazon just days before Eddie Albert died, and watched it a few days after that, so it was kinda bittersweet to watch. I could barely recall anything of it since I'd seen it only once at its initial theatrical release so this was a nice reminder. Albert plays the President in it and who's plagued by nightmares that Dennis Quaid, with the ability to enter people's dreams and interact with them, helps him overcome.

The only nit that I can recall of it since I just saw it is when the paramedics try reviving a dead Mrs. Matusik and the actress moves a split second before the paddles touch her.

This isn't that bad a movie; the dream concept is fascinating and the cast is a good one. Quaid is okay, although he seems to be doing a Harrison Ford impression throughout (I likes my Denny Quaid more as the strong, silent type)--Ford's co-star from "Temple of Doom," Kate Capshaw, is on hand, much more tolerable than in that film.

The supporting cast is juicy--Max von Sydow as Quaid's mentor, Christopher Plummer as the bad guy, and Eddie Albert as the President. If only the effects were better, I guess.

Yeah, it was only Kate Capshaw's second film, according to the audio commentary, and watching it again I thought how gorgeous she looked and how well she seems to have aged since then, though that might also have to do with being married to Stevie S and having no shortage of funds to make her age as little as possible.

As for the effects, well, it was filmed in 1983 so they weren't anywhere near to the level that they've become only a decade later with Jurassic Park, not surprisingly another Stevie film. Of course if the film had even half the budget of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and ILM's help then its SPFX would've turned out to be much better.
