Okay, so I've seen it something like 3 times now. Does anyone else love it?

The music, the energy, the meaning (no day but today!), the cast, the love, and.. *happy*

My favorite songs are "Another Day" and "Light My Candle," though "Out Tonight" and "La Vie Boheme" are up there too.

How close is it to the Broadway play? I love the cast album.

I assume that with the songs you've listed that AIDS and drugs are still major elements.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, December 12, 2005 - 9:23 am:

It's a faithful adaptation of the stage play, though they appear to have gone through the script and carefully changed only the things that *won't* hold up to scrutiny.

By Sparrow47 on Monday, December 12, 2005 - 10:49 am:

I haven't seen it yet, though I have to say I'm a little skeptical seeing as the play? Not rated PG-13.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Monday, December 12, 2005 - 12:43 pm:

Oh, sure it is. Nobody's gunned down, they don't say "••••" *that* much, there's no explicit sex... that pretty much merits a PG-13 these days.

Doing a faithful translation of "Contact" seems like it could trip some alarms, but maybe that's just me.

Perhaps I'm just being curmudgeonly...

By Hannah F., West Wing/C&J Moderator (Cynicalchick) on Monday, December 12, 2005 - 9:44 pm:

They didn't do "Contact" or "Halloween."

I haven't seen the show. :(

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 - 3:12 am:

According to IMDB, "Contact" was shot but cut. I find this dubious, as it doesn't show up on the movie cast album, whereas "Halloween" and the second half of "Goodbye Love," also conspicuously absent from the film, do. (Good riddance to "Halloween," anyway, as it manages to be an exposition song that tells us absolutely nothing new.)

By Sparrow47 on Thursday, December 15, 2005 - 3:55 pm:

Hannah, the guy who originated the role of Angel on Broadway (his name escapes me at the moment) likened "Contact" to having a massive orgasm on-stage in front of hundreds of people. So if the movie doesn't have it... yes, it's been sanatized. Alas.

I agree with Matt about "Halloween," though.

...the guy who originated the role of Angel on Broadway (his name escapes me at the moment)...

I may be wrong, but wasn't that Jai Rodriguez, who went on to become the "culture" guy on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy?

No.

I think Angel from the original cast returned for the movie. It's most of that cast, from what I've read.

By Matthew Patterson (Mpatterson) on Friday, December 16, 2005 - 3:01 pm:

TomM, nope, Jai Rodriguez did not originate the role of Angel. Jai did play Angel for a time, but he did not originate the role. (Heck, he was like 18 when the show was first getting off the ground.)

By TomM on Monday, December 19, 2005 - 7:19 am:

I did say "I may be wrong..."

I think I'll just go eat worms.

Does anyone else hate the part in Angel's first song when he sings about getting rid of the annoying dog by throwing it out the window. They all laugh. Ha. Ha. Ha.
Also, it really bugs me that the character who loves Mimi (he sings "one song, glory...")at first does not want to have sex with her (knowing that he's HIV positive), but Mimi is ready to jump into bed with him even though she too knows that she's HIV postive. It really turns off my sympathy for her.
