Maybe a nit, maybe not as I haven't seen the movie yet, but IIRC advertisements for The Ghost & The Darkness featured a full-maned lion, except that the two lions this story is based on were, according to the latest National Geographic, Tsavo lions who are either maneless or have very little manes.
KAM, I've got the book about these lions and if I remember correctly they were female lions so, no manes.
The Ghost and the Darknesss lions are on permanent display at Chicago's Field Museum of Natural history. They are a bit smaller than you'd think (partly due to the skinning process--there's less there than there originally was) and they are maneless.
Correcting my earlier post. I've since learned the lions were the uncommon maneless males.
So, I didn't remember correctly. :-(
Of course, they did take liberties. The character that Michael Douglas played was entirely made up.
In reality, the chap that Val Kilmer played killed both lions.
The bridge they were building across the Tsabo River is still there and still in use.
