Why did Rotwang design a worker robot with breasts?

The round dial with the 3 hands seemed really inefficient at whatever the hell it was supposed to do. You'd think this thing could have been easily automated.

Why did John Fredersen want to cause the workers to riot?

Amazingly a robot that was designed to do manual labor could easily be converted to the task of causing a riot. Also once the robot was turned into a Maria lookalike it seemed to adopt mischevious & flirty emotions.

Did John Fredersen's son have a name?

I recently bought this on DVD. It's visionary.

The opening scene where the employees plod to work reminds me of how I feel going to my job.

There are large chunks of this film missing...probably forever due to its age.

Rotwang designed the robot to be exactly like Maria in every detail, including her breasts. Frederson wanted the faux-Maria to be a temptress to do his bidding.

Frederson wanted the workers to riot against the real Maria...to destroy her messages of inspiration. He wanted the workers to be miserable and without hope. Once he did that, the real Maria would be released an the employees would kill her.

As you recall, Maria was seen by Frederson as an inspirational voice to the workers. However, Rotwang betrayed Frederson and programmed the faux-Maria to incite the workers against Frederson.

It probably could be automated, but that would take away Fredersen's pleasure in watching someone work their ass off until they collapse.

Yes. It was "Freder" (Short for Frederick. I assume)

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought the robot was made before the decision to have it impersonate Maria?

The last time I looked at a DVD sleeve of this it stated that only a few minutes of the orginal cut were missing.
