The Original Batman Movie (1965)

Holy Campy Caped Crusaders Classics! This movie is now on DVD!

TRIVIA: What song was the Salvation Army playing on the pier?

Here's some of the nits I found in this fun fun movie! (It's not just fun....it's fun fun!)

BEST LINE: "Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb!" Batman with the bomb with the eternal fuse.

GREAT SCENES: Electric shocks from Joker's handbuzzers...real!
Flying smoky umbrella at UN building...good!
Disappearing yacht! Very good!
Vanishing "guinea pigs" Good!
The criminals dehydrating the UN council..great SFX

Madge Blake (Aunt Harriet) had NO LINES whatsoever in this movie!

*One of the closeups of the Polaris missle is flipped (The letters are backwards)
*One of the closeups of Robin under the yellow spotlight in the opening credits is flipped...the "R" is backwards!

FAKE STUFF---
The henchman falling into the water from the springboard
The shark attacking Batman
The flying umbrellas in the sky
The ducks in the water.

The speed of the shadows of the Batpropellors on the Batcopter do not match the speed of the actual propellors

Answer: "Bringing In The Sheaves"

Batman with the bomb with the eternal fuse.

That also wins for Best Scene! Batman running around the pier holding a bomb, frantically looking for places to dump it, is hysterical!

By John A. Lang on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 3:38 pm:

OUCH! You are so right! I forgot that one.

This movie also features all the "Bat-toys"
(Some were rarely seen in the series)

The Batmobile
The Bat-Copter
The Bat-Cycle
The Bat-Boat

Bigger bat-budget is why.

By John A. Lang on Monday, September 10, 2001 - 11:24 pm:

Other "Original Batman" movie nits...

*The blue sky out on the ocean looks like blue stucco with clouds.
*There's a shot of the Batboat with Robin wearing the headset BEFORE he's supposed to. (He wears them when they chase the sub with the "Batblaster"(Can't remember exact name of gadget)
*After Robin says, "A ball point banana", the camera switches back to Batman...it certainly looks like Adam West is teetering on the brink of laughter.

CHEESE CENTRAL....

*The porpoise "sacrificing" his life for the Dynamic Duo.
*The miraculous foam rubber landing.
*The sign at the end of the Bat Ladder ("Bat Ladder")
*Batman & Robin "Running down the streets" of Gotham City.

Another Great moment....

When Robin hands Batman the Bat shark repellent, he does so by hanging upside down on one of the rungs of the Bat Ladder (You expect this because Dick Grayson used to be in the circus)

In San Francisco, I saw this in 1967- 25 cents.I was the only one in the theatre!

Me myself and I!

or is it 1968? or 1969?

By Adam Bomb on Monday, June 23, 2008 - 6:46 am:

A special edition DVD will be released July 1. I can't find any description, to determine if there are any differences between that and the old version. The price (ten bucks) is right, however.

By Influx on Monday, June 23, 2008 - 9:54 am:

I'd get it if it has additional features that my current one doesn't have. However, that logo is all wrong! Obviously changed, and brought out at this time to capitalize on the Dark Knight release soon. I've seen people get swindled, er confused into buying a DVD they thought was something else, this way before.

By Holy Time for a Colorful metaphor on Monday, June 23, 2008 - 8:25 pm:

I got the 1966 dvd that had audiocommentaries
by the Dynamic Duo-is that it?

By Brian FitzGerald on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - 6:50 am:

That's interesting. On one hand they didn't change the shape of the logo; it is the shape of 60s TV series logo; but they totally used a 'dark knight' style coloring in hopes of grabbing some fans of that batman, rather than a 'candy coated' style color more emblematic of that campy 'silly 60s' series that it came from.

Here's a review of the original DVD from Eccentric Cinema.com.

By Adam Bomb (Abomb) on Sunday, July 07, 2013 - 8:54 am:

David Rose over at The Agony Booth has made a video review of this pic. At 81 minutes, it's well worth a look, as Rose (who obviously loves the series and this movie) gives a lot of backstory about both. The movie was made after (not before, as I first thought) the first season finished filming; its stated purpose was to sell the series abroad. The video can be seen here.

I agree that the scene of Batman running around with the bomb is hilarious. However, I'm really surprised that he didn't have SOME sort of gadget in his utility belt that could have put out that fuse.

By steve McKinnon (Steve) on Monday, May 31, 2021 - 5:15 pm:

Someone posted a youtube video playing the 1989 theme over the opening credits of this 1966 movie.
Surprisingly, it kinda works well!

Those were NOT the opening credits of the 1966 movie.

You mean something like a Bat-Scissors? Just cut it off?

By Keith Alan Morgan (Kmorgan) on Tuesday, June 01, 2021 - 3:40 am:

The utility belt with the Bat Bomb Fuse Remover was left in the batcave? ;-)

Some days you just can't wear the right belt.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Monday, August 16, 2021 - 10:50 pm:

Just watched this last night...

Here's some nits.

* How convenient that Batman *just happened* to have had the Bat-Cycle hidden and stored out in advance. When did he have a chance to put it there when he had the Penguin in the Batmobile?

* At the Security Council room, when they were rehydrating, it sure didn't seem like enough water to fully rehydrate 9 full grown adults.

* I'm surprised that Batman/Bruce didn't recognize that Kitka was Catwoman from the way she rolled her 'r's in "purrrfect". I'll chalk it up to her phony Russian accent.

And now some NANJAOs...

The wharf scenes were filmed a the Santa Barbara Wharf (noted from the DVD extras)

The Gotham City Airport was Van Nuys Airport. Not particularly surprising, given the history of the filming.

Lee Meriwether was the *SECOND* Catwoman, before Eartha Kitt. I thought she was the third.

By ScottN (Scottn) on Monday, August 16, 2021 - 10:51 pm:

Oh, another nit...

Catwoman wasn't very neat when sweeping up the five guinea pig henchmen -- she spilled a lot when putting them into the vials.
