In the opening montage of establishing shots in "Dog Day Afternoon" can be seen (sadly, now) the World Trade Centers. Weren't these not yet built at the time the story actually took place?

Dog Day Afternoon takes place in August 1972. The towers were, indeed, built.

According to this site, they were opened in 1970, even though the top floors weren't complete till '72 (1WTC) and '73 (2WTC).
